Here's What I've BROKEN in 32,000 Miles with My AMG GT Black Series!

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Let's find out what's wrong with my AMG GT Black Series, not that it has reached 50,000km / 32,000 miles! I'm visiting Opus at the Nürburgring, for Lukas to check over the car and investigate the recent error message. Let's find out the truth of driving a car like this so hard!
Over the last 2.5 years, my GT Black Series has been resprayed, upgraded to the Opus 850hp packaged, travelling to the Middle-East, visited 30 States of the US, done Gumball and the Transfagarasan in Romania, and now been up to the Arctic Circle and back. Along the way it has clocked up around 15 track days, lots of new tyres, and even a few windscreens, but with almost certainly no other GT Black Series sharing such a high mileage, it makes it fascinating to dig into what's going on.
Finally an error message had popped up in the last few days, sporadically showing with no clear reason, and there are a few other things around the car itself, but this is where the expertise of Lukas from Opus steps in to figure it all out. Effectively carrying out a healthcheck because of what the car has had thrown at it since the last update with Lukas at 32,500 km / 20,000 miles.
Things are going pretty well; the error code relates to an internal ECU in a damper but there's very little that can be done with that right now. There are some cosmetic issues like PPF that needs work, but also the front splitter that has got filled with stones thanks to my snow driving, but generally speaking it is doing well and not in bad shape at all.
Thanks to Opus for all of their work:

As a German i'm glad you mentioned how here in Germany driving at High Speeds not allowed in other Countries is a daily common thing and nothing special. So much so driving at least 200km/h (120mph) or more on your daily Commute to work is Routine. A lot of Foreigners can't wrap their mind around it and i feel a ton of German Cars are engineered for this daily Speed so if they are driven in slow US Traffic for example they end up having Issues which would explain why a ton of German Cars are higher rated in Reliability in Germany compared to the USA. Some Cars just need to be driven fast, especially if they're German and if not every Day then at least every now and then as you do. why would driving fast ever be a net benefit for the mechanical parts of a car? the only thing is long, sustained drives that allow the fluids to circulate the car properly and for the engine etc to get to optimum temps. driving 'fast' does nothing but wear out parts faster. the argument for higher revs can be done in lower gears so speed is not an issue. the reason for shit reliability is probably because some countries aren't car savvy... a lot of people don't understand car mechanics so they just rev it to 6k from a cold start, dont change fluids etc. Germany probably has a higher number of people who actually care for their car and don't just see it as a point-a to point-b machine.

Interesting fact: In Germany you’re not allowed to repair tires with a 240 km/h or higher speed rating ( V,W and Y Rating tires). TÜV is not happy about plugs in tires which are for highspeed driving. And I get you point changing them with such a valuable car

when you have 11 faults in a row after the service and nothing feels wrong there's basically just two suspects, a wiring issue and the ECU overheating after the ice driving, remember that although the ice road looks fairly smooth it's very bumpy and the suspension have to work ultra hard and that suspension ECU fault is probably a combination of the active suspension magnetic fluid getting incredibly hot and being out of spec for the ECU to react within tolerances. It has to be something similar that happens on modern motorbikes with active suspension where on track days the active suspension part get incredibly hot special oil had to be used etc etc they wanted to change the entire part $2500 part and it just got hot and overworked... also I think maybe the studded tires could be part of it.

  • @StormFlank6

I agree with you.Your theory sounds right and just however the errors started just after the service before he went to the artic cicrle if you look closely at the mileage at which it was serviced at and when the errors started..I think the upgrades and software do play a part when the dealerships updates control units and clears faults with their own diagnostic on a car which is not standard with no standard software..I have experienced issues with cars which do have software..I've tried to clear faults and it just lights up warning lights and errors when doing so...I do agree that those studded tires and extreme conditions have played a part.

Question Tim: So awesome that you actually drive your cars and put them to the test. I wonder if manufacturers reach out to see what is going on after so many miles and in so many varying degrees, so many track days, and a proper thrashing or two, that wear and tear on your car, you can provide valuable data to them. Do they reach out to see what is working and what can be improved? Do they help cover costs in exchange for that data? You know what works and what doesn't. McLaren dkes that sometimes I'm told at least according to Triple F.

Plus fully laden vehicle would affect psi needs too but assuming that’s not a factor here per se (no other passengers) then for sn AMG Black serious I’d imagine recommended pressures would be higher for daily driving (clearly track days excluded).

Regardless of how true that is, you can’t blame him for it. Incredibly valuable, and just about as far from series production you can get. Plus, driving on the Nurburgring is a liability in itself as many of the other people on Easter weekend have no clue what they’re doing. But hey, we can dream right? 😁

Mercedes Benz is a very special, solid as a rock automobile. This is proven once again by this video. However, you drive the car very carefully in all circumstances. By that I mean you do not abuse the car. You only drive it in all situations in the appropriate for the circumstances. There is no over revving. There is no clutch slipping, There is no brake stabbing or tire skidding. Just driving to the maximum while observing correct procedures for the equipment.

As Tim said check your tires. They are the only ones to keep you on the road and they indeed make a huge difference.

Really missing the Shmuseum content - I wish you would bring a team on board to have some banter. I think this is a missed trick!

@@rebelranter not the channel - just content buddy. The garage tour videos are extremely repetitive. If Top Gear of old was on everyday, most people would switch off after a while. I’ve been a fan of Tim and the channel from the beginning - plus met Tim in person . He is an awesome guy!!! I just feel Tim needs a refresh of the channel in some way.
