This guy has weird tastes. I really challenge anyone to find a better car, with better tech, and better looks for this price range.
While I normally enjoy the videos on everyman driver this review seems to have been done in between trips to Redhook. The heads up display is a safety feature and can be found in the same position in the Audi, BMX Mercedes etc... People had the same concerns over airbags when they first came out as well. 6/10 for a car that was in the Top 3 Motor Trend car of the year award contest VS the Stingray and CTS. Those cars are 40 k more!!! I think this car needs a new review from everyman driver with a everyman driver!!!
As someone who has been driving the 2014 mazda3 sedan for 3 months I disagree with much that is said here. My mileage is about 32 mpg and I drive in the city 80 % of the time. The center panel is extremely easy to use and the knob a great touch. Many luxury entry level models like MB and Audi have similar displays and receive great reviews. it is simple and intuitive enough for an 7 year old to comfortably use with no exaggeration. Also both the mazda3 and 6 have been winning many awards for their premium feel interiors. Oh and the material of the panels of the front doors and dash are soft and premium. The rear is hard. The ride quality and make quality is far superior than the competition even at the entry trim. The mid level trim gets you much that you see for 20k. With leather, heads up display, regenerative technology and superior climate control and audio equipment you get plenty for 24k. Go see it for youself or better yet drive it for a day. You'll enjoy it a lot and never look back at the Civic , Corrola, Sentra or even the focus.
I just bought a '14 Mazda 3 i Sport this past Thursday, and I love it! The 6-speed stick is sweet, it has plenty of power for what I need (if I want power, my wife and I have a '14 Mustang GT), and the MPG is excellent. The car is fantastic.

Glad you like it. I have ordered it as well, but will have to wait until april for it. Did a long test drive though. I noticed that the 7 inch infodisplay was way to bright whilst driving at night. Is there a way to decrease the light intensity? (I couldn' find out how..) Greetings from Austria!

Hello there! I'm sorry, but I can't be of much help. The model I drive only has a regular radio, not the touch screen. I'm sure it can be dimmed, though. Best of luck!

PantherP74 Stumbled upon your comment while reviewing cars, looking to get this car exact same year, how did it hold up for you over the last 3 years and would you still consider it now?
The audio button near the upholder is for the front passenger to operate the radio while the car is in motion. This is required since the touch screen is disabled. The arrangement makes sense to me.
The twin self experiment was hilarious. Thanks for the laugh. Great car review!
Man I love the touch screen where it is!! It was one of the big factors in me ordering a Mazda3!
Do you think you can fit to German Shepard sized dogs in the cargo area with the back seats are up?
6/10? man this guy have terrible judgement. most people can agree that this car looks the best in segment and yet he doesn't like it. i hope he isn't comparing it to a bmw...

He was a little harsh! On average, professional reviews have come in closer to 8 out of 10. I think the sGT with the larger engine and more refinements and features for not much more money would have altered his overall impression. The overall mileage he saw is a little disconcerting and the infocenter up on the dash is a personal thing...they are now doing the same on BMW's and MB models. The line of sight and size are a plus........

He brought up valid points that other reviewers don't: this car is noisy and it's true. Competitors are far quieter. Nav screen looks like someone stuck a tablet on there w/o any sun shade. Dash is horrible. Other reviewers focus on 0-60 and skid pad ratings, placing too much value on tenths of a second which isn't important in cars like these.

I love Mazdas but I agree that it is a bit strange looking. The wheelbase is much to long. Mazda built great looking cab-forward cars. The 6 can handle the "rwd" looking front proportions, but the 3 and the upcoming 2... Weird looking in the same way the BMW 1-series is weird looking :P
Loved the review, thanks man
i love my 3. got a '14 6spd. current fuel economy is 37.8. love it
Thank you for making this video. I have this exact vehicle. I enjoy watching your videos. I like how you fold down rear seats and show functionality. Many more videos to come.
I loved the clear text on the infotainment system and actually all of it. It looks great.
Loved your review man... also Subscribed.
Love your voice and review!!!
If I had that touchscreen thing, I would constantly be worried about someone breaking into the car.
great review, the twin idea is really cool lol
Great review Dave. No other reviewer does a "twin" backseat room review like that so I say you should keep it. It gave really good perspective of two people seating. I agree on the touch screen control issues as well.
I have had my 2014 4 door 2.0 GT with auto transmission for over a month now. I do a mix of city and hwy driving about 50 miles a day to work. I avg 34-36mpg city and 39-45mpg hwy the most mpg I had seen to date was at a steady level 65mph for a 5 mile stretch 47.2 Mpg. on cruse control, the tires were up to spec with minimal weight, just me and my computer bag. I was quite surprised but I did the math and sure enough the numbers were spot on. So take his numbers with a grain of salt.
@uzumaks. There are lots of vehicles that allow you to use the touch screen while driving? - Dave
Awesome review!
great review ,dave. thank you for not skipping trunk and rear . just cant get over how expensive compacts can get. unless you want a lot of features, you can get a base, midsize car with similar gas milage for the same price
According to my information.. I had the 2014 Mazda3 i 5-door Grand Touring. The engine was the SKYACTIV-G2.0L, DOHC, 4-cylinder, 6-speed manual transmission, 155 HP, 150 LB-FT torque - Dave
Sounds like he's reading from the press release.
Yes, I am glad you returned to your old style Dave. I like this so much better, thank you!
I'm really, really impressed with this review. Good job. I personally like this car but I don't like how the options are set up. In the previous model Mazda allowed an option to add the moonroof without having to get all the added tech. Saves a lot of money. I think Mazda will change that after they did very poorly in sales... which is really surprising to me.
I drove this car and it looks very attractive sans the smiley face. It's really high quality and is way better than for instance a Lexus CT. It's biggest drawback to me is the somewhat noisy cabin. The five door configuration offers a lot of utility. No way this is a 6/10 Dave! For the price I'd rate this more like an 8.
I just got a 6 speed hatch in red & I love it! Coming from a car enthusiast. Clutch feels good, the gears shift really smooth, and good steering feedback. I drove the previous generation Mazda 3 also and it's a whole different car in a good way.
What more do you need on your instrument cluster? I'm tired of all these cluttered wheels and center stacks and dashes.
thanks for loading something in the trunk and folding the seats down as an example of how someone would use the car. Some editors leave this part out, but it is important to me when buying a car. I love hatchbacks (very versatile). Mazda3 is exactly what i am looking for, downside: rear legroom is my biggest gripe + the sloping rear roof line, reduces storage capacity. Very good review though
He didn't wear his seatbelt?
Great review, Dave! Having reviewed both this and the Mazda 6, can you comment on the added utility of the hatchback? It almost looks like there's as much storage space in the Mazda 6!
Lastly, the only reason they gave you that rear camera (which you could buy second hand and install yourself for about $200.00 is because visibility out of that rear window is ridiculously bad.
Why do people hate on the screen? It's amazing, I have this car and having this screen is so useful for gps and radio. I live this car and it is a huge upgrade from my old 95' corolla lol!
That 'pop-up' screen appears to take on a lot of glare. Did you find that to be the case? Good review...
Agree: styling is out of proportion…on the other hand thumbs up for long front end, long vehicle wheelbase 106, low curb weight 2700 lb, sporty styling and fairly economical average 33 mpg Original owner 2002 Mazda Protege5 2.0 EPA rating is 25 in city and 34 on highway So far, best average is 26 mpg Current odometer: 146,500
That's funny. All this time I thought you were saying "Oblank" handles; like a new word that "someone" made up. But what you were actually saying was, "Oh ____!" This by the way, makes perfect sense. Wonder if anyone else was confused by this before. Great review. Thanks.
I didn't fully appreciate the design of the new Mazda 3 hatch until I saw one going down the road one day. This thing has a presence on the road. I sure hope that we get a Mazdaspeed version soon.
Side by side thingy was fun. Gotta try to make it a little more seamless and interactive like the ones DrivenCarReviews has been doing for years. I know its not the same perspective, but both are useful. Good review
Wow a 6/10, what other car in this segment do you think is better??
@SIIKAP1

Nothing! This literally is the best of the segment.
Jonaswang72, I tucked the seatbelt under my left arm because otherwise it rubs on the microphone. Good eye! - Dave
Excellent review, very thorough and objective and I agree on your overall assessment. Checked one of these out that was used. Liked most things about it, especially the ride and the space when back seats are folded down, but like you, not the body style that much. Between a 2015 Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra and Mazda 3 in comparable packages, do you have a 'best opinion'? Thanks a lot, some of the best car reviews on the net!

+Richard Alan I appreciate the kind words, and thank you for leaving your feedback. - Dave
I have a 2007 Mazda 3 (5-door), only 48k miles on it, and I'm still happy with it. I'm not a fan of these newer models, appearance-wise. I think the 2010-13 looked best of all.
I have test driven both the 2014 Mazda 3 and the 2014 Honda Civic. Being young, I have my prejudices against Honda for being an old person's car. However, I like the infotainment system interface in the Civic a bit more. The touch screen is a bit easier to control being mounted closer and angled toward the driver. The ride and road noise in the Civic is much better managed although the cloth seats in the car I tested weren't nearly as good as the leatherette seats I had in the Mazda. The Mazda looks better, is more fun to drive, is slightly more economical, and slightly more practical in hatchback. However, the top trim Mazda 3i Hatchback is almost $1500 more expensive than the Civic and the Civic is slightly better equipped. Also considering that the Civic does have easier financing for recent college graduates, I think that the Civic edges out the Mazda for me.
Loved the two-persons in the backseat thing. Great idea.
Kudos on a full non-dealer review. 33MPG with a 2.0L Manual is pathetic. I've heard about the noise issues before and even on the 6. That infotainment system is nice but the aftermarket look is odd an not directed towards the driver. Once I opened the back door on one of these at the OC Auto Show I was done. The wheelbase needs to be stretched a few inches to compete with Corolla / Sentra. The price gets stupid quickly once you add on some options. Especially compared to the 6.
This car looks so much better with the bigger tires on the "s" model. It's also funny hearing people complain about price. If you add a touchscreen infotainment system, blind spot monitoring, back up camera, cross traffic detection system, etc it's going to add to the cost. You're going to have to buy the $31K Mazda6 Grand Touring to get all that, so in that case, the $25K price of this car makes plenty of sense. Plus, a similarly equipped Focus, Forte or Cruze will also cost $25K.
I'm getting 28mpg in my s Toruing with 75% plus city driving with spirited night drives on my nights off. According to my car in 1,000 miles my average speed is 25mph. The car does have some downsides but after 6 weeks of shopping in this segment it was just the best car available IMO 6/10 tells me I'm not going to be watching your reviews because we aren't on the same page, you only showed in my feed because I've been researching this car.
is the Mazda 3 hatchback costly to insure?
Pretty good review. I agree that the multi-information display on top of the dash is an eyesore, but it's pretty cool that they a least offer something like that. Hopefully Mazda can find a better place for it.
It will be interesting to see how this new model sells in comparison to the last model. Maybe it will pull more people to give it a look . . .but not me. There's just something about the profile and the front end that just put me off. To each their own, though. Good review, Dave!
Does it have temperature gauge? I didn't see one on my test drive
Dave, Would be interesting to hear a comparison between the 2.0 and 2.5L versions. I suspect the mpg would be nearly as good with the larger engine, especially on drives like you took to Seattle. (There is that mountain range you have to cross, after all.) Unfortunately, as you note, the MT is available only with the smaller engine. Given Mazda's rep, I was disappointed that you didn't give more attention to the handling. (Hiway 2 would have been a choice on that score.) Good review overall.
It's nice to see someone not tripping over himself after driving and reviewing this vehicle. Automotive reviewers rave about this thing like its a something far more than the economy car that it clearly is. I've driven it and don't get the excitement.
I think the 7 inch screen looks great - very Audi like. (And that is a good thing.) Plus why is it a bad thing that you have multiple locations to control the infotainment system? It's great.
First day I've viewed your videos... hello from Vancouver! Love the "everyman" concept... you're quite the guy! Liked the twin special effect. Would love to see more reviews on standards & diesels (I only drive standards). I was lookin' forward to watching your other videos, that is, until I saw that you were already married... LOL..jk. Take care.

+Sarita N Thank you - Dave, Everyman Driver
good point...why not drown out the tire noise with the induction growl...works on my '05 with just a basic K&N air filter and cleaning the fuel injectors regularly...the jolts bother me more than the noise going over bumps
I was really excited for this car. I just went to the dealer, saw it in person, and took a test drive. The car seemed small on the inside, especially in the back seat. The lack of storage areas was very disappointing. There is only a cup holder in the front doors and no large area at the base of the centre stack. The touch screen on the GT was a little tacky but worked well. Car was decently quick. Good handling, ride, and turn in were the car's best features. Pretty expensive too..
Dude, You look like WWE wrestler Alex Riley
The volume knob near the shift knob is probably for the passenger to control the volume.
I'm confused. You mention this is the GT model but you say it has the 2L 155hp engine. On every single review of this vehicle I have seen so far including what is on the Mazda website, the GT model can only come with the 2.5L 184hp engine. Is this the GS model?
I am a bit sad that in the sedan version there is no chrome tipped dual exhaust like they do in the hatch version.
oh man i love the look. i hope u agree it looks better than the previous one.
MARZDA?
Some Mazda 3's don't have the 7 inch screen instead just a regular stereo and also wouldn't it be difficult to upgrade the head unit? Weird how Mazda didn't make the head unit so it would be intergrated into the dash. How bad is the road noise?
I know that there are a number of people who will like this new design . . . but I am not one of them. It just seems that some of the proportions are off. The hood is too long, the side windows are too short . . . glad to see a new grill treatment though. And I totally agree on the screen which sits atop the dash. Looks like it gets washed out by sunlight quite easily. Meh.
I've had my automatic 2014 M3 for about 6 months now. Overall I still like it, but the MPG is disappointing - avg 32 mpg with 50-50 hwy/city commuting - and the A-frame is so thick that it creates a front blind spot. The blind spot is especially noticeable on the driver's side when pulling out into traffic.

Not even 19000 dollars.... Damn, cars are so cheap in the US... The 1.6 starts at 22000 Euros here.... I ordered the 6 already, but else I would definetely consider the Mazda 3 as my second car (two same faces on my parking-spots would look weird).... The weird thing about this review is that I agree with almost everything Dave said in this review (not the part about the looks. I really like it, and think it's one of the best looking models that has been introduced recently), but totally disagree with the 6/10 rating (as do most media).

Blame those import taxes, or the US's lack of them. It also allowed the foreign auto-makes to destroy our domestics. But even so, the domestics were sitting on their hand, riding sales, fleet unloading, and cost cutting until they were no longer competitive... It's all a mixed bag.
@domagoj5455
10 жыл бұрын
yes, I can confirm that Mazda 3 is much expensive here in EU (I'm in Croatia). So it can be a good value outside Europe, but unfortunately not much so here. Rolanie3, maybe we shouldn't blame foreign auto-makes, it's all about competition and who makes better cars. At least you have lower prices there, so we should complain, infact :-)

***** I blame the domestics for counting on fleet sales and blind patriotism to get them through when really they should have been investing in R&D
Good review as always Dave, but please wear your seatbelt when you're driving!! Safety First!!
Hey Dave, do you think you could review the new Mercedes-Benz cla. I would really like to hear more about it especially from one of your detailed reviews. Thanks!
Nice review. I am not so bothered with a instrument panel that does not throw a lot of info at the driver. I would rather drive. Kinda agree on the media screen though. But the center stack controller is nice too.
I really like the design, but it needs bigger wheels to make it look right. Certainly looks a lot better than the massive smiley face that was on many Mazdas.
The S touring model needs to be at least 1k cheaper and 2 inches longer ,looks stubby, for about 2k less you might as well get the 6. Nonetheless major props to mazda i had a 11 2.5 hatch amazing car for what it was, i even feel that i handles slightly better than my 13 genesis coupe.
I prefer the sedan instead looks much nicer.
Does anybody know if mazda still have the same old engine which drinks a lot of oil engine? Btw nice review and I like the car look sportyish
Good pragmatic review, but you really didn't cover much about the driving dynamics and how the car "feels" to drive. A bit of an oversight considering the reason people buy the Mazda3 over its competitors is for the way it drives.
The screen on the dash is no after thought by mazda, in fact, Mazda chose to do that to shorten glance times when you looking at a display. So when driving, it's angled about 5 degrees down so 'less distraction'. Probably would of been better if Mazda had a curve back cover intergrated into the dash to deter the people who are paranoid some douchbag will think its an ipad. Overall it was carefully thought about the positioning of the screen.
Food for thought...in its' homemarket (Japan) and other asian countries, the Navigation units that are commonly used are the ones that are placed atop the dash similiar to the one in this review...I believe this is preferred for the ease of use in reaching and touching the touchscreen while not having to move your eyes away from the road ahead very very much, whereas in dash units U have to glance away from the road and look down at the unit, also reason for the lack of use while driving, in US.
Back of the car looks goffy
Yep but that doesn't translate into second row seat space in the 2nd row on the Mazda 3 or 1st row space in the Corolla yet the Sentra seems to get 1st & 2nd row space right.
I got rid of my 2007 Mazda 3'S because of the road noise, a year after I bought it. I guess Mazda still has not learned 7 years later. If it wasn't for the noise I would buy another one.
Can you guys review the 300c
i think the centre stack in the mazda 3 seems to have been copied from the new mercedes centre stack, especially the 7 inch "tablet" infotainment screen, the control knob and the climate control area. if people dont mind it in the mercedes, why mind it in the mazda?
You mean the wheelbase that measures 106.3", which is exactly the same as the Corolla and Sentra?
Too bad you don't enjoy the car. nsidering it's received several accolades, this car is a clear win win when looking for an excellent efficient drivers car at economy car prices. Curious what your recommendation is in this category?

In no way am I sexist in any way shape or form but i have heard club managers next to me bemoan the shrinking shrill voice of a Meat raffle hostess. The other great youtube car reviewer is that Englsih Guy on Carbuyer - he is excellent as well.
can you compare the mazda 3 and the subaru legacy please :)
this new mazda 3 looks like its the best car in its class
Really wanted this car, until I realized the horrible job they did with the Navigation System. Terrible location, it looks like an aftermarket device and it WILL get stolen. You'll come back to find your windows broken, and they will try to grab it out of the car. Not to mention, the new location removes the option for you to upgrade your sound system, you can't customize it anymore. They should have left the display where it was located in the 2013 model.
The previous model beats this thing inside and out. How shameful.
I get 33mpg with my 2005 with highway and 32mpg with less hwy ...and only a few times slow steady flat cruising over 37 ... I don't see as big an improvement as I would like...that 37mpg highway with the 2.5L 185 hp would satisfy me.
Look at the website, there is an i GT as well as an S gt. The S GT comes with the 2.5l
I probably could have bumped it up to a 7/10 - Dave
your math is wrong: 40*.9+29*.1 = 38.9 which is 18% higher than 33.
Looks like they couldn't decide whether to make it look like a crossover or not with the hatchbatch.
Can you make a 2014 Honda Civic Coupe EX Review please
