2014 Mazda Mazda3 5 Door Hatchback Review and Road Test

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The mainstream compact car segment is the perfect example of the infamous "driving appliance." The Corolla and Civic sell in enormous volume because they are the middle-of-the-road "white bread" option, not in-spite of the vanilla. Unlike many in the automotive press, I don't find anything wrong with that. In fact, I love me some Wonder Bread. But sometimes you feel like a pumpernickel, and that's where the 2014 Mazda3 comes in.
Accounting for 30% of Mazda's worldwide volume, calling the Mazda3 their most important product would be putting things lightly. As a result 2014 brings a complete overhaul to every aspect of the 3 and the compact sedan now rides on a platform derived from the larger 6. The "Kodo" design language of the larger sedan has also been brought down to its smaller stablemate to astonishing effect. While the old Mazda3 was all smiles and bubbles, the new 3 is all grown up and aggressive with Mazda's incredibly attractive grille. Before the 3′s release I was quite torn about who was the fairest of them all but now there is no contest.
The 2014 dimensions play a huge role in the way the 3 looks on the road. Mazda moved the A-pillar 3.5 inches to the rear making the hood longer, lengthened the wheelbase by 2.5 inches, dropped the height by 6/10ths and made the whole car 1.6 inches wider. So far so good, but somehow Mazda managed to slash the front overhang and increase the wheel-to-front-door distance to an almost RWD like proportion. That would probably have been enough in a segment dominated by slab sides, but Mazda puts two distinctive character lines to separate the 3 from the pack. Out back we have tail lamps that mimic the front styling and your choice of a hatch or a trunk. Opting for the hatch gives the Mazda3 a side profile reminiscent of BMW's X1, not a bad thing to be reminded of.
With pricing that ranges from $16,945 (sedan) to a hair under $30,000 (loaded hatch) if you check all the option boxes on a Mazda3 hatch, it's obvious the Mazda spans the price spectrum from white bread in a bag to a paper-wrapped organic artisan cheesy sourdough. Like the Ford Focus, this large price span means the $19,495 iSport and $20,645 iTouring compete with the bulk of Corolla/Civic shoppers while the upper level trims compete with the Ford Focus, Acura ILX, Lexus CT200h, Buick Verano, and the few that shopped Volvo's defunct C30.
Compared to the Civic and Corolla, the Mazda3 delivers superior dynamics and more premium dash materials in exchange for less tech and no touchscreen infotainment. This is a dangerous trade in a segment known for placing features before fun. On the flip side, the Mazda3 has everything it needs to compete with the Focus, ILX, Verano and CT200h. Mazda's chassis tuning makes the Mazda the most fun to drive (even considering the ILX 2.4′s Civic Si roots), the infotainment system is entry-level luxury worthy and 2014 brings all full-speed range radar cruise control and ever gadget the Buick and Lexus shopper could want. So is the Mazda3 the perfect pumpernickel for Wonder Bread prices? As good as. Civirolla shoppers who can be convinced to cross-shop will be pleased with Mazda's sexy exterior, comfortable seats and road manners, but those after large seats and large trunks will return to the white bread alternative. I suspect the near luxury shoppers are the ones that will miss out the most however thinking that nothing this tasty could come in a package with a Mazda logo on it. Their loss.

Excellent review of the Mazda 3 Alex. We would like to comment on your value proposition statement. The Mazda 3 is not the cheapest car in the segment but we would like to point out that it has the best fuel economy in its segment, has the highest residual value according to ALG and is one of the safest vehicles on the road. For instance, people don't realize that not all cars are built the same in that on the Toyota Corolla you get Front Wheel Disc brakes and rear wheel traditional drum brakes where as on the Mazda 3 it is equipped with 4 wheel discs brakes on all 4 wheels. In addition the vehicle is equipped with 4 channel ABS brakes where as some companies have two channel ABS brakes which results in less responsive stopping. That being said, Kelly Blue Book also awarded the Mazda 3 one of the lowest total costs of ownership over a 5 year period, and we may be bias but we think its the best choice in this segment. Thanks for putting together such a detailed review.

Great review Alex, I bought a 2016 i-Touring a month ago. I got it with the 6-speed manual. On my first two fill-ups I got 34mpg, and I've been driving it gently. I am so impressed with this car! I especially like the suspension and the manual transmission. The handling is all you said it would be. If the pavement is coarse it is somewhat loud, but on smooth pavement it is fine. If you love to drive and enjoy having some involvement in your daily commute you will love this amazing car!

The only thing I don't like about the video is that I currently drive a 2012 Mazda MX5 and this vehicle has made me think about making a change. Very convincing and logical. Looks like a great product. You certainly gave it a great showcase. I like the way you balance the good points against the "less good". Very fair review. I love the look and the fact that it comes in a manual version. You answered the questions I had almost immediately after they came to mind, especially the braking ability. At that weight it seems as if it would be a bit better in that category. Thank you for doing such a thorough job!!!!! To make me even consider a move from my MX5 is nothing short of a miracle because I love everything about it minus the limited space when I want to take a beach chair to the beach!

Thanks for your good work Alex! My beloved 2013 FJ Cruiser was stolen two weeks ago and I have been looking at a replacement vehicle. Test drove a 2016 Mazda 3 briefly and it felt pretty darn good. Not as zippy as my old RX7 or as big as my old 626 but a nice blend of both. If I had any lingering doubts about the Mazda 3 you certainly put them to rest. Looking forward to getting over DOUBLE the mpgs of the FJ! My wife is looking at the Subaru Crosstrack and appreciated your in depth review of that vehicle as well. Happy to be a new subscriber!

Hi Alex - thanks so much for your thorough reviews. Partly based on your review, I ended up buying the Mazda 3 I Grand Touring 5 door and love it. Most of the time it's just me in the car so I didn't want a large car but I did want the ability to carry some larger items if needed and this fits the bill. I was also looking for good gas mileage and I've been averaging just shy of 35 MPG. I enjoy driving this car a lot and find it very peppy. It has more technology I could ask for and find it fairly easy to use. I actually like the placement of the touch screen and clean lines inside. My only real complaints so far (and they are minor) is the lack of places to put things and placement of the cup holders. I wish cabin noise was a bit less but I realize this is not a $45 luxury car so can't expect too much. With that said, this IS the most luxurious car I have ever owned and I'm very happy with it. On another note, I know someone that is looking to buy a Kia Optima and couldn't find a review for one. Anything in the works? Thanks!

I do oil changes more frequently than what Mazda recommends as an extra precaution since it’s a gas direct injection engine (carbon buildup). These cars are workhorses. Hey Alex - great reviews! I'm in between cars at the moment, just got rid of an expensive-to-maintain (but fun) X3 and looking to downsize (both size and financially). You make some compelling points and show some great perspectives into what might make the Mazda a good buy for some consumers. Most of my commute is LA-city driving, but I enjoy the weekend drives and long road trips as well. This seems like a great car to pack-up and take out on the road with a couple friends. I look forward to watching some of your other reviews and finding that perfect car soon.

I like it! There are not too many cars that are compact sized with good power and a near luxury feel. Most compacts are geared towards economy with the exception of some European brands. I'm not the typical demographic though, since I want a nice, compact size car, whereas most buyers lean towards SUVs or mid size sedans.

Thanks for the review. It is excellent. You might find though that the seats are leather but the armrests, door inserts and backs of the seats are Maztex (faux leather) because leather in these areas tends to get ruined by the sweat coming off your arms and scratched by kid’s shoes etc in the back.

For 2014, Mazda seems to have used identical rear passenger doors & windows for both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Mazda3, which explains why the hatch is more "swoopy" and not boxy like the prior versions, resulting in 2 inches less head room. In the earlier Mazda3 hatchbacks, just aft of the passenger doors, there were upside down, delta shaped, rear quarter windows giving it a distinctive profile, which ended up influencing other crossovers such as Calibur, CRV, Edge, Murano, RAV4 & X3. First used on the Fairlady Z of course. I remember when I first bought my 004 Mazda3 hatchback how so many people complimented on it's unique styling, and were surprised it was a Mazda, which helped this modest company really stand out. Toyota should bring back the Corolla wagon, and Honda should do the same with the Civic hatchback. Another great review. Thanks.

I just test drove a 2014 Mazda 3 GT Hatch this past week, interior noise at 75mph was 64db to 66db , the same as it is in my current 2011 Mazda 6 i GT. Also you can get the top of the line model without the tech package (which is a bit of a waste of money) for around $27k. The paddle shifters are a nice feature too. And the LED front and rear lighting on the the GT models is extremely good looking, makes the car look like it could easily be a $35k model.

I haven't driven it recently, but I do like the Forte. I think it is a better value than the Mazda3, but the Mazda is the better vehicle over all. It depends on how much value you put in "value" The Mazda is better in many ways but it is more expensive so the improved cabin and better driving dynamics will cost you.

With the 2.0 and a manual I drop just 5 hp from my current car, which I probably won't notice, but gain a significant degree of mileage which I will definitely notice. Also your quick shot of the base audio module is the first time I've seen it and it definitely seems designed to upsell you to the Mazda connect system. However, in Europe the same car trim has the max towing weight listed as 1300 kg (braked). I’m asking because due to a daily work commute, I’m getting rid of my truck and I’m planning on buying a small car (good gas mileage), and then a trailer and the ATV for those weekend adventures. Thank you in advance!

In N. America many cars have no rated towing capacity because it is fairly rare to actually tow. Going by the EU rating is a fairly safe bet since the car is largely the same.

Hello Alex. Love your reviews as well. Really liked your comments comparing it to the new ILX. That helps a lot because I loved the ILX at the car show. Perhaps you could help me, though? I'm torn between the 3 grand touring 2.5 hatch and the 6 grand touring sedan. Obviously, the 3 has the hatch practicality and price. The 6 is a bit more roomy, especially back seat. To me, the six has the better style given its length (and nicer rear end!!!). Still, would the 3 hatch be a good compromise if a 6 is too far out of reach? Any of the colors stand out to you as preferred?

It depends on what you're after. The CX-5 is the better handling and more efficient vehicle in real-world driving but the Jeep is more off-road capable and has a much more modern suite of electronic gadgets and gismos. I would personally take the Jeep because I favor the gadgets and the more accommodating rear seats, but it won't be as much fun to drive as the Mazda.

The high end system in this model is above average for the economy car class and a step below something like a Lexus CT 200h or Audi A3. This generation Mazda3 is much quieter than before which helps, but it is still louder than a more expensive hatch.

I like it. The CX-5 is one of the best handling small crossovers right now. It's down on power vs the higher HP versions of the Escape but it is well priced. I think that the infotainment system is the biggest problem for it, it is very similar to the system in the Mazda6.

Hi Alex, what is your opinion on the 3 now being built in Mexico with new engine trans etc? Is there enough concern about build quality and possible issues due to being built in a new factory, to be dissuaded from buying right now? I would also like to extend that question to include the 2015 Honda Fit as well. Seems like many car companies are opening new plants and redesigning their cars right now so how seriously should this be taken? Cheers.

38 is bumpy but tyre wear is more even. If you rotate front to back regularly you can do 36psi front no problem.

  • @ecurules
    @ecurules10 жыл бұрын

The change in the front suspension added about 3 degrees of positive caster (making it equivalent to most sports cars). More caster means that the car will have a greater increase in negative camber on the outside wheel as the steering angle increases. More dynamic negative camber could possibly translate to more tire wear ( I doubt it). If this were the case, BMW 3 series and most other RWD cars would have significantly more front tire wear than your average FWD family sedan.

I am not sure about the infotainment system sitting on the dashboard like that. It would be nice if it folds horizontal and slides into the dashboard when it's not in use. Otherwise, it seems like a nice car and I would definitely get it if somehow they fix that infotainment.

Great review,I'm glad to hear the mazda3 is still the drivers' choice in the "compact car" class Just wondering but how's the rearview visibility? I feel as though that back glass is a bit narrow for a hatchback. a lot of reviewers have been saying that the available HUD is kind of silly; have you found that to be the case?

  • @zxbc1

    @zxbc1

    10 жыл бұрын

I own this car now, and have been driving it for a while. The rear window visibility is indeed fairly narrow, and the D pillar is on the wider side. However, there is a blind spot monitoring system and it works very well (beeps and flashes light, and sensitivity can be adjusted). The back up camera is also very good. The HUD is a kind of mixed bag. I am now almost completely relying on it to read my speed, since it really does keep your eyes on the road. However, I wish the position of the HUD screen can be adjusted (the projection can be changed up and down though). If you are a very tall driver, you may find that the screen is located too low such that the angle places the projection near the windshield wipers, which can be annoying. I can adjust it to a slightly higher position, about just above the hood, which is really nice for me. As for the actual display, I wish it could give me more information than just the speed and nav instructions (such as a simple tach).

  • @AAutoBuyersGuide

Personally I did find the HUD a little silly, but some folks just love it so who am I to comment? I actually found rear visibility fine. There are plenty of cars that are worse and hatches tend to all have a similar problem because the size and shape of the windows. I think the Focus is slightly worse, the Golf is better and the sedan versions are better in general than the hatches.

Chris Choi Rear cross traffic is the same system as the blind spot monitoring (just a set of radars on the rear bumper), so when you're backing, you'll get the usual beeps and flashes if it detects cross traffic. You can adjust the width of the detection. I have mine on highest, but I might tune it down since it is extremely sensitive.

Very nice review. I do, however, have a question for the enthusiasts! I'm looking to pick up a 2015 Mazda3 in the very near future, but am torn between two options: Mazda3 i-Grand Touring Hatchback OR Mazda3 S-Touring Hatchback. With the i-Grand Touring I get a moonroof and real cream leather (which I am a fan of) With the S-Touring I get a 2.5L and the 18inch rims. Whichever I get will be a 6spd manual. The S-Touring will be just under $1,000 more. Is it worth it for the bigger engine and rims or will the 6spd make the 2.0L be peppy enough?

I have to say I'm very pleasantly surprised with it. Interior quality is fantastic, exterior styling seems like it will age well (despite the fact that I got the hatchback). There are some subtle interior upgrades in the 2.5 (such as metal trim along the dash rather than piano black glossy inserts) which really give it a nice, more upscale look. The 2.5, I think, is worth the upgrade. Not that the 2.0 isn't usable but if you drive it afterwards, it feels a bit asthmatic in comparison (no offense to the 2.0 owners). Also, the 2.5 comes with the nice analog rev counter in the middle, where the 2.0 comes with the smaller digital rev counter on the lefthand side of the display, giving up the center to the speedo. I think if you're going to go with the manual, the bigger analog rev counter of the 2.5 is nice to have. Also, the 2.5 has a nice system which tells you what gear to shift into. I don't always listen to it but I don't BELIEVE the 2.0 has that feature (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The lower profile tires and bigger wheels of the 2.5 are louder though. Definitely not as quiet or as comfortable as the 2.0. But a set of new tires may remedy that a bit. The manual transmission is nice. However I will say in cold weather, it is very heavy and engages quite abruptly. After warming up, it's smooth and easy-going. Also, 1st-2nd is harder than most cars to shift smoothly into due to the gear ratios. You really have to have some finesse. However, that will become second nature in time I think.

No problem, happy to help! And I think you will find it to be a pleasant surprise. The biggest thing for me between the 2.0 and 2.5 was the feel. Totally different. The brakes are bigger and the extra weight over the front wheels gives the car a surprisingly more upscale feel. Best of luck with the hunt!
