Paid for home!

I started as a Junior Waiter on cruise ships out of college, became the golf professional and then joined the USAF. I’ve missed ships so much though I’ve gone back to school for my masters and unlimited maritime license to eventually become a captain. I’m looking to jump right into yachting as soon as I graduate! I’ll be 40, but it is never too late to do what you love.

I don’t understand why the boat doesn’t have a chef and a sous chef. The chef has to make three meals a day for the guests and the crew. That’s too much for one person

I don't know why they don't have a set menu, with exceptions for the people who cannot have certain foods and prepare the same menus for all the different charters. The current charter does not know the LAST charter had the same menu. Do as much ahead as possible. AND keep a chocolate and vanilla cake in the freezer. Every chef has a cow when he or she has to prepare a cake, (birthday, wedding, etc.) Common sense.

The chef should make more. Closer to the Captain.

Yeah, when I visited my mum last week she was watching the show all day, every day for hours. I normally don't watch trash tv like this, but I saw the appeal when watching the 'rocky " session. That girl was very entertaining and crazy.

This show is the only reason to pay for Peacock premium

Hmmm, no income taxes. If you're a US citizen, the gov't does not care whether you earned that money home or not, they expect you to pay. If you get caught not paying, they're quick to assess penalties. Also, while it may be glamorous to be going to great places and experiencing the high-life, you are stuck in quarters that you share with someone that is as big as a jail cell so privacy is out the door. Remember that you are not working an 8hr job as you are catering to guests from the time they wake up to bedtime. Not trying to be a party pooper but there's always two sides to a story.

This is nonsense. A chef makes about 90k a year on vessels this size. They purposely under report here and on websites to keep underpaid, low skill, desperate land chefs away from the industry.

@@ChristopherNips81 Yes! All three of them hugged and thanked everyone for coming to see them (we did the VIP route so we could meet them), and took photos with everyone. Kate complimented my blouse three times and said she was going to get one for herself. She was funny and very sweet.

Well, I have that though all the time about many things, sometimes you hear something like "These marines for eight weeks!" or "Police officers go through a rigorous eight month training process" and all I can think is, you know, most professionals have to study for four to eight years, and I work an office job and have had to take up to three month long trips, I am with you, I don't know what these people complain so much about, specially as some if not most of them have one or two college degrees, I mean, you only came home for holidays for years. It's so crazy.

@Stevospeedo no, servers provide service on yachts. No Chef/owner that I've ever seen, even in mediocre restaurants is there 20 hours a week. If my executive chef/owner was there 20 hours a week I would leave immediately. That person is lazy, doesn't want to know what's going on in their business and will not succeed. You're delusional and you obviously never worked in the higher levels of the industry. Everyone has a boss that they serve and there's nothing wrong with that, even restaurant owners. Your ego and lack of accomplishment is why you look down on the idea of "serving someone". Their boss is the bank that lent them the money, their investors and their clients. You're either a troll or you flip burgers for a living.

I'm left wondering how many of them can squeeze additional gigs into a calendar year. When they say "annual salary", does that really mean they can't fill out the rest of the 52 weeks with income-producing activities? How many weeks is the Season for which they earn $50K - $80K?

Laura Jeffrey bullshit, you have no idea what you are talking about, not a clue. If you are an American, you must pay your income taxes. You are only exempt up to a certain amount if you live in another country, not on the high seas with no fixed address. All US mariners must pay taxes.

I think the taxing authorities have a different perspective; your "residence" is determined by passport country. For those in the US, check the "opinion" of the IRS. Just because you don't "earn" your money within US borders, or have tax withholding does not make your income tax free.

They do - it's 50% but are expected to tip on the full value.

On the Below Deck Med Series: Who was the blond primary who brought the "harem" on his charter? He requested Bobby take the girls shoe shopping. Then got Bobby "punished" for bringing only half of them back to the boat. The primary was mad that he had to wait a few minutes for dinner. He told the girls not to say a word while he spoke to Capt Sandy and demand Bobby do night anchor watch. Usually Capt Sandy allows filming of the preference sheet meeting and says who the primary is in the episode. I noticed that that episode had it's preference meeting deleted . I guess the primary had his attornies demand that to be deleted so that no one could look him up. At least one of his "harem" spoke no English because another girl had to tell her in Italian to keep her mouth shut. Then another girl said she would not go out partying later if Bobby were not with them. So, the primary spoke to him alone on the dock, basically apologizing to Bobby. But, it ended up on camera. Which, I am sure, made the primary feel he "looked" better.

I did! I’ve worked on cruise ships and one mega yacht as a golf professional. Such a great lifestyle. However, I wanted more responsibility (and money) so I’m getting my masters degree and unlimited maritime license to become a mate (and eventually captain). I’ll be 40 when I graduate but that’s another 25 years of work which I’ll be absolutely in love with. It’s never too late to chase your dreams (cheesy, I know).

The IRS thanks the captain for actually showing the cash tips being paid. He even broke it down to what the season's total tip package was at the billy cocaine trip show.

@@MrBeatboxmasta I think the tax-free income is for citizens of countries which are not the USA. The US is the only country that taxes world-wide income regardless of your residency, and would expect all income to be reported annually. Other countries only tax residents, so by being non-resident you can avoid paying tax. Even so, there are clear guidelines for what it means to be non-resident and it is wise to get advice before counting on this as a tax avoidance strategy.

The show is misleading about that. They call their 6 week filming a “season” which it certainly is not a full season. Real crew work most months of the year and typically have a high turnover (not a lot of job stability typically). In other words, what you make, you should save and plan on being unemployed for a bit till you land your next gig. If you are a professional, however, there is plenty of work to be found, especially if you are flexible.

Med Season- (early May- early October) Atlantic Crossing for FL shipyard work/boat show (2-3 weeks) or shipyard in Europe for winter layup Oct-Nov - Fort Lauderdale for yard work and FLIBs Nov-Aprl- Caribbean Season April-May- another yard work opportunity before next Med Season May- Atlantic Crossing to repeat (these are my rough timelines after 10 yrs doing it.)

I watched a lot of episodes, but I asked myself a thousand times if I could do this work ? No I can't. The idea alone makes me already sad. Respect for the people who can do this work, but the money can't buy the time that I have to miss my family. It's a lifestyle not for everyone. I can prepare magic food dishes, provide very excellent service, still I can't. Maybe on another location, somewhere in the jungle.

How long is the season ?. That looks like good money but the shifts seem long.

Around 3 months can be considered a season. A season is typically an informal referal to the first charter to the last charter in a location (the med or Caribbean).

Think about what those “real house wives” get paid per season. It’s all relative and based upon viewership.

Why do we tip people for doing their job? We don’t tip a doctor for saving our life. We don’t tip a lawyer for keeping us out of jail. It’s not like these people are students trying to make tuition. What’s with the culture of tipping for doing your job? Are they not paid enough (tax free)? Is the cost of the charter not enough? Please explain to me why we tip professionals? Stay safe from Newfoundland.

There is so much not shown or discussed. The first officer or bosun is not as important as the chief engineer (rarely shown or mention) who is responsible for keeping those huge Diesel engines running good order, not to mention tons of other mechanicals: gensets, air conditioning, winches, etc. there are also a huge number of husband and wife combos.

@@kisi5209 Or they are not as young, or sexy females, or "sightly" I think is the word they use. And maybe the engine room is not as pretty as the upper decks? They do show an engineer on the "sailing yacht" version sometimes, but I think he is also the Bosun.

People in the oil rigs in my province make about 14-20k a month so?!

I think its a great gig, but they don't have a 401K and they have to pay their own health care. I will also say they do work very hard and I am not saying that from watching the show, I know from being on a yacht this size as a guest.

I’m getting my license to become a mate (and eventually captain). I had to attend a university again to do this and it will take 2.5 years (masters program). I’ll be 40 when I graduate but I’m having a great time in school and even graduating at 40, I’ll have 25 years to keep doing something I love. It’s never too late.

Christopher Neil would have been faster and cheaper to hawespipe it to your license. You should have consulted someone and if you did, they gave you bad advice. You would have had your 3rd mate in 3 years and made very good money while doing it. Now you are in debt and still only a 3 rd mate.

No income is tax free. Yacht employees have to pay taxes in their country of residence. If they don't pay taxes they're breaking the law. Saying you don't have to pay tax because you don't reside in your country of origin for more than 6 months is a lie. I worked on yachts for 7 years. This is simply not true.

@@leemactavish3104 All good? What the hell does that mean? All good to never file taxes? Where is your pay being deposited? In what bank? Wrong. You have to file taxes in your country of residence. If you don't end up owing, that's great but you still have to file. If you're outside your country of residence for more than 183 days, YOU ARE NO LONGER A RESIDENT. If you're outside the the UK for more than 6 months you have to surrender your NHS card and you are no longer covered. If you're holding on to that card and you're out of the country for more than 6 months, you're committing fraud if you use the card. See how that works? If you use the card, you're a resident. If you surrender the card, you're not a resident. Even if you're not a resident, you're a citizen. It defaults to your country of birth if you have no residency anywhere in the world. No matter what YOU HAVE TO FILE TAXES SOMEWHERE ON EARTH. There is no such thing as not filing taxes. If you're smart and you establish residency in some tax haven then you possibly won't pay BUT YOU STiLL HAVE TO FILE. You should stop giving people wrong and dangerous advice.

US citizens, regardless of where they live and how long they live there, must file and pay taxes. Only way they are not paying is tax evasion.

Not true at all. I’ve filed “foreign earned income” this year and last year. in 2018 it was up to $104,000 and 2019 it was $105,000 tax free. (Edit: as long as you spend a total of 330 day out of the U.S., you can apply for this exclusion).

long slong This does not cover US mariners. You are not “living aboard” when you work on the water or living on international waters making you exempt from tax laws. Foreign earned income does not apply to US mariners, we have our own tax codes and laws that we have to follow. But go ahead, try not paying your taxes to Uncle Sam, see if that “international waters” excuse keeps you from becoming another Al Capone.

The downside to not paying taxes is you're f***ing your state pension. Anyone with a braincell would opt in to pay Seafarers Tax.

To get that amount per year working at 17-19hrs a day is not good for your health in the long run aging from 22-45 y old? But, you only live once in life...

Numbers are about the same for a welder. Harder to not pay taxes but possible using the same play. Depends many times what Country your employer is. Welding Inspector makes about what Captain Lee does. Well, not 20K a month but 200K a yr. overseas is pretty average. 50 an hour here stateside, easy.

They work hard and are not overpaid by multi-millionaires. They sure do a lot of hooking up for such a tired bunch.

Seems like a fantastic gig until I remember that you have to put up with countless a-holes.

Tax-free yes, but no SSI benefits, or medical insurance, not that's good.

I just think about my time in the navy and sharing a berthing with 50 plus women. Yuck. Life on the ship is ROUGH. There's no privacy and it's NOT easy but if I could make that money I would do it.

Yachty I guess is Good. But working in a regular ship....flat dialy rate 15+ hour days.. no ty

they get salary per month so when the yacht is busy, you could easily work 16 hours a day for months. Ends up being a lot less than imagined per hour.

200 K for a captain is very low. They have to work hard from the bottom, study, put up with long hours, lots of responsibility, babysit the crew and the guests, and if some imbecile comes into the boat with five grams of drugs the captain can lose the ship and his license. The captain has to be the all the roles of CEO, HR, Safety Officer, customer satisfaction, etc. Not to mention they are responsible for multimillion dollar complex and delicate pieces of specialized equipment. I think they should make way more money, of have a share of the earnings.

I was told the chef makes the second most money on the boat behind the captain.

As they should if they are good! They are on call 24 hrs a day for passengers, make all the meals for guests and crew

Without discounting the stew crew at all!!!! I am surprised how much more the stew crew get compared to the deck crew

That's because the stews are taking care of EVERY want a client has.

I like captain Lee. responsible, firm, leads by example, super professional. Fact is, People who pay $150-200k a week for a charter will expect perfect luxury service. If you're going to join the crew for all the fun and parties, you're in for a rude awakening. How much does a waitress earn in a restaurant? Add your bills, rent, car, etc expenses, you better be sure that you are much better than just a waitress at a decent restaurant, especially when you get $200-400 just in tips per day of work. If you're smart with that money, you can easily save up, invest and move onto better things in life.

I did not like Riley! She had a foul mouth, and kept yelling she wanted respect as a captain. Guess what ur weren’t a captain then, ugavw NO respect and then cried. Tough huh? Scoffs! All the 3 rd stews were big baby’s, for that kind of money get over yourselves! Love kates jokes, she’s my fav! I’m glad Hanna Oregon’s so she’s off the show! Scoff X 2! IMO

A season is like 8 or 9 charters I think that each last 1 to 3 days with a day or so in between the next guests/next charter. It's good money for a season being so short.

I love the captain we love Kate. But it gets to be a little too much love the show.

I work on super-yachts as a chief officer (but on 250ft+ yachts only) and feel like there are two sides to the industry. There's the "Bravo TV" yacht industry, where the crew come and go on a weekly basis and mostly work seasonally but don't have any benefits or job security and then you also have the big boats with a long standing professional crews on permanent contracts with 60 to 182 days of paid leave per year and full medical benefits. I can see a lot of people asking about head chef salaries and can tell you that on prestigious 250ft + yachts it ranges from 9,000 to 15,000 USD a month and often comes with up to 6 months a year paid holiday. So these salaries may be correct for below deck and that side of the industry, but for the ultra-secretive big boats it's a lot higher.

Do you work at sea? I assume not otherwise you'd know this, so I'll explain. It's down to licensing. I have an unlimited license rather than a restricted or yacht license. So I take advantage of that and work on the really big yachts that require that license (which is usually over 300ft actually). There are not a lot of crew with the combination of yacht experience and an unrestricted license, so as a result I get paid a lot more than I would on the smaller yachts, get a lot more time off (182 days leave vs 38 days), have a big single cabin and just all round have a much better lifestyle. So yeah, it's beneath me I guess? I don't know what to say. Pay me the same and give me the same lifestyle as I have now and I'll happily work on a 249ft yacht.

willinilli ummmm why are you referring to length instead of tonnage? I thought you were in the industry? BTW, I have never worked on anything shorter than 800ft. Length doesn’t mean a thing in our industry. Restricted licensing refers to waterways, at least to the USCG. And if you do have an unlimited ocean going license, you wouldn’t have gotten it working on yachts. So there is something amiss with your story telling.

Well I’m not a guy, but going on Hannah’s personality not her looks. I wouldn’t want to deal with her if I was I guy. Hannah has to go have a sleep ,and had panic attacks because she was in love. Think she really high Maintenance.
