Save it 100%. It’s a classic Porsche and a rhd! At the price at which you bought it, any money you put into it will instantly be doubled in return. Keep up the good work on the channel. A 911 build would be the perfect side project.

As an owner of a 991.2 911, I'm all for saving the car because I love classic 911's. As we all know, the only way to determine if its worth saving is to start by dismantling it and hope for the best. It's already got lots of cool and usable parts so it certainly won't be a total loss of good money. Best of luck and you've just gained a new subscriber courtesy of Samcrac! I'll be following along with every video you upload and I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Yes, it’s gonna be a money pit. And yes, it’ll be worth saving! Love the seats. I’m normally a purist but with this car there’s little need to stick to only original parts anymore.

Save it, no question. Resto to good useable condition, doesn't need to be a concours winner ;) Those checkered Cobra seats are the way to go, and get the rears trimmed in the same material! Paint the original tangerine orange and it will look A1! Looking forward to following this...

Thanks for the video. What a great project. I’ve been watching a few other video series of 911 restos for the last few years. Daily driver? Will cost you nothing. I’m not sure you can half do any of the jobs. Or just fix when it breaks. Full resto. These figures are taken from books or other KZreadrs or a guess. This assumes no cost for labour as you’re doing it all. Engine £3k parts, £3k machine shop minimum. 40-60 hours Gearbox £1k parts. £1k machine shop. 20-30 hours Body work. Parts £5-8k. Anywhere from 50-300 hours of welding / prep / paint. Just ask Mike from Vegas. Wiring loom £5k? 10+ hours? Suspension. New shocks £1k+ / refurb all parts. Got to be another 20 hours. I’d say another £5-15k for other supply parts. So total £24-37k plus your time. The other problem with the expected value is that restored cars only seem to be worth a lot of they are done by a reputable garage. There’s a restored / restomod 912 on eBay for £20k. Personally I would sell it for £15-20k and import a rust free car from USA for the same price and rebuild that and respray it.

Been watching your channel for some time and please don't take my comments as being too negative just some advice from one car nut to another. I don't think you have the option of just patching it up as it is already too far gone, a quick scan of an old MOT from 2014 (yes I know it's now exempt) shows it had structural corrosion issues on all four suspension mounting points on the chassis. If you want to save this car it will be a massive undertaking. First job your gonna need to completely strip it, take out the interior, drop the engine and transmission, remove the suspension, take out the glass and remove the doors, bonnet and engine lid. Then the rotten panels will need to come out. Then you are into the unknown, the inner panels could be completely rotten... As you said replacing all the panels and getting it all welded up is going to be ££££s, the other option is to find a rust free shell. I've seen a few Californian imports turn up now and again for reasonable prices without interior or engine. I'm not just an armchair warrior I have a 944 (which I spent considerable time restoring myself) and a 996. If it were me I would sell it as is or strip for parts. Having owned rusty cars in the past once it gets to a point unless you have your own bodywork restoration business will be pretty difficult to turn it around. Best of luck with whatever choice you make! Oh and please don't support a car with just the jack, couple of axle stands only takes a few mins so why not just be safer 👍

You’re brave to take it on. It’s a pretty ripe old girl and has been messed with extensively. I’m watching a pretty new small US channel called Budget Buildz He’s doing a ‘73 911 Targa from a scrap yard which is trashed and he’s putting floor pans in it. The guy says he’s using a Canadian supplier for Porsche repro panels which are sensible money. I can’t remember the name but check his Porsche videos and he does name check them. It might save a bob or two. The floors don’t look so bad on yours. Best of luck 👍

Take it from someone who's been through this recently, it's going to be very expensive! A car with this amount of rust you're on the same path to daily or show car getting the body work and paint sorted. I would get a quote for the full rust repair and repaint and based off that number work out whether this 911 is within your budget and what kind of restoration road you want to go down. If the engine and trans are ok just fix the oil leaks with a good clean, service and pop it back in. A full engine and trans rebuild is an expensive business even if you do it yourself with the machine shop and parts bill (ask me how I know!). You've got to think about not only the financial commitment but the time. It is a beautiful car and one worth saving. It will make a great series of videos too, one's many will watch! Good luck and I'm following with interest! Body and paint, the big ticket 25 grand. Electrical 5 grand Mechanical 10 grand for daily or 25 grand for full rebuild (the parts and machining are so expensive) Misc 3 grand

Hey mate, I wouldn't read too much into the comments to scrap it, strip it for parts, etc; you can spend £100k restoring it (which I don't think you will have to) and you could still make money from it - and that's just in today's values. A quick search didn't yield much for less than £115k for a '71 T. Give it a few years and I reckon this car will worth £200k+. They're getting rarer to buy by the day.

10.000£ is a bit pricey, for a rustbucket like that. But i’ve done the the same, time and time again. My addiction was Alfa’s from the 1960-70ies. We have the same weather in Denmark. So, weeks of cutting and welding. It’s a labour of love really. The worst part, is all the botched repair, that you have to re-do. SAVE IT.Good luck. 🇩🇰🙋🏻‍♂️

Hi Scott, love your videos ! very informative and helpful. You are probably already aware that your car was LHD and has not been converted correctly. I am not trying to put a downer on the project far from it. After converting my own 911 I know what needs changing and there are quite a few things (including the heater controls that you found) The car is no worse than some stock at your friends at Beverly hills car club sell. I hope you have fun with the project and I look forward to following the progress

  • @SpawnyWhippet
    @SpawnyWhippet4 жыл бұрын

Do a leakdown test on the engine. That will help you assess whether to do a top end or full rebuild. (Valves should be set correctly first.) Do the Fuchs date codes match the chassis date? Check the main seal on the gearbox when you pull it. Depending on which 915 box you have, you may need to pull it apart to replace the main seal, the later 915's can be replaced from outside. Re the travel in the gear change, you can get a bushing kit that removes the slop. The glovebox door in your car looks like it came from a LHD car. If it was me, I would strip it to a bare chassis and get it blasted. You are missing some cup covers from the leading edge of the lower suspension wishbones.

Do a slow restoration on it as a daily driver. Like the rest of the cars. Dont change any panels or anything. Restore and re-use as good as you can. Maybe you could turn more against the rat look and have another cool rat rod. But keep the roof. Or just keep the present classic good look as far as you can without painting the whole car. Just fix the vitals, drive and have fun.

Hey Ratarossa, a suggestion from Aus. I reckon that it might be a good idea to invest in a gazebo to go over the cars in the driveway or maybe a permanent solution like a waterproof shade cloth. I keep seeing rain going into the hood and trunk when you open them and I'm just thinking it might be a long term contributer to the rust.

Scott, this is a phenomenal project, one only I know you would be capable of doing justice to. Looking at all of your efforts on the f cars this 1 should be a walk in the park for you, however not sure you will get your money back on it though. The market for these generation has peaked, and anyone who wants them for nostalgic reasons are either dead or in a nursing home. So i think you have to ask yourself the question, how do you feel about owning one Porsche vs several Ferraris. If it was me I would aim for somewhere in the middle of daily driver and concourse condition. Given your proficiency with electronics and mechanicals, once the car is back from the filler and painter you should be able to do everything yourself, and teach us all a thing or two in the process. My guess, not charging for your time; 15k for body work + repaint 5k wiring loom 6k top end rebuild 2k interior

Someone commented on an online auction comment that glass and glass rubber surrounds for a 2002 cost $10,000. So I'm guessing even getting all new rubber and hoses would run to $000's. UK20,000 is my guess for panels, rust treatment, rubber, wiring, redoing the botched bits. Then another UK10,000 for parts for the engine. So UK30,000 to get something presentable but not concourse.

A compression and leakdown test will let you know whether it is engine rebuild time. The round mirrors are right for an early car...your car probably uses flag mirrors. The very loose gearshift is not normal. To get to a nice rust free daily driver...40K sterling... to get to showroom, add 20K.

Just stop the bleeding. Fix the rust and patch it on the cheap. Don't replace any panels. It may not look perfect but it can look decent. Then focus on mechnicals. Wiring can be cleaned up a lot without a new harness as long as you make it safe and functional. I would not spend a dime on the seats and interior until you have completed the external body flaws. You will not get money back for a nice interior with the outside looking like it does. Clean up the engine bay but a full rebuild would not make sense unless the rest of the car would match. You would have a fun car to drive that did not cost a ton. Long-term look for deals on body panels for a full restore but enjoy it now. If you make it perfect it will be an investment not a toy.

Great honest video....my feelings are you either do it 100% properly or not at all. This has some major rust and it needs sorting properly, not only from an aesthetic point but from a safety perspective too. If you bought this for 10K and had to spend 20K on doing it up you are still quids in as they resale on them is bonkers money. Plus there are tonnes of aftermarket companies that do all the panels you do not need to buy genuine Porsche parts as thats will bankrupt you. I suggest joining up to Porsche Club GB and then you can get access to all the club discounts and traders that sell the classic parts!

Nice video man! As always! Absolutely keep the car and restore it to mint conditions as mine! Tangerine colour is gorgeous, 2 front bucket seats, momo proptotipo steering wheel already in place, stainless exhaust system already in place!!(2000£). It will cost you between 50-60k£ assuming all done by yourself apart from metal work and painting: you skills are great but it deserves professional finish! The same for internals: new dashboard cost a lot but is first touching and staring point in the car. Your internals have anyway many bits that could be saved by a good professional trimmer! Door pocket...don't care about that: expensive and all eeplacements are not good and prone to break easily again. Engine: if it's running and not smoking why split it? Change all seals, all reachable externally and...small leaks will continue in any case, although you do a complete overhaul. So do a compression test now, than unscrew all valves rockers and do leak valve check. Then adjust valves according to manual and do compression test again. If all results are pleasant, equilibrated between all6cylinders I think it makes no sense to complete overhaul the engine. Small oil leaks would be ever present, overhauled or not. Clean perfectly carburetters, most of all the upper "sprint" jets. Wiring: buy it from kroon wiring in netherland..perfect parts and less than your estimated 5000£. Gear lever: change teflon bushes along the gear bar and linkage under the rear internal tunnel grill. Under the gear lever check the plate and springs if need replacements. Floors are good, buy new front and rear wings, try to save front hood, buy new front undertank panel. Buy Inner and outer sills and jack support. Although spending 60k£ plus 10 k£ of car you pay 70k£ in total for a car that perfectly restored will never value less than 80/90 k£ and would be great to enjoy. Unless you want a proper personal restomod don't do easy mismatching modifies like E or S upgrade or whatever. All people die for S models more fot the value or "nominal" max bhp power but the T is the really enjoyable thanks to carburettors, torque at low rpms ang extreme lightness. Torque is at 4200rpm on T but pulling from 2500...S pick torque is at 5200 roms but pulling after3500... If you re not on atrack or quick road is difficult to enjoy. Resist on putting power that means warmer oil temperature, need of radiators, thermostats and pipes long as the car, and bigger brakes...all these stuffs are also a lot of weight....good job! To the next video...

As pointed out this is not an easy project. But given its RHD (originally?) makes it more interesting to save. Sourcing 2nd hand original Porsche bodywork parts could bring out of pocket costs down a bit. But I'd most definitely have the bodywork done by the best specialist you have in the UK. Eliminating the rot is prio #1 I guess. You can request a certificate from Porsche which will list all the factory specs. My tip would be to keep it (or bring it back to stock) that will retain its value the best. This info also lists the engine/gearbox number, if its still matching numbers this is a bonus. I'd opt for a complete new loom by the way. At the end of the day, fully restored to a 2+ condition you're looking at a €100-120k car. This will help do the maths :)

Don't be discouraged! Rather than replace the expensive "wings" (we call them fenders in Nebraska) get yourself a welder and patching them. New ones MAY fit and often do not. Watch Coldwarmotors and Halfass Customs for tips on successful welding. I would try to repair as many places as possible...the wiring just needs a new harness .....I would spend my money there, but use the diagram and design your own. For me the bodywork is fun and the easiest part of the restore....It's not rocket science....Muste1 also has some great videos on rust repair. Here in the frozen tundra of North America we do it for therapy....If it is a driver don't blow too much money by replacing too much. Look at Budget Buildz $500 for ideas...DIY the wiring- you have done such a great job fixing the Ferraris this is much simpler...save the cash and take your family on a nice holiday (vacation) instead...

I'm sure you've done this book. Why not check to see if there's anything better out there? Before you jump into this project. And see how much You can get for yours. You'll see what else is out there before you start everything. Maybe get rid of it get something a little cleaner if there are available.

To make a driver by just adding everyday sheet metal patches, blending paint, and doing the minimum to sort the electronics $5-10k. To make showroom quality back to all original - $25-30k.

If the floors are as sound as thy seemed, you have something to build on. What you didn't get into when you were under the back, was a good poke around at the torque tube. They filled in the access holes at the bottom of the rear wings, when they did the rattle can restoration I'd guess. The front suspension mounts seemed reasonable,if the rear tube is shot,it;s an expensive repair. It might be better to search for a straighter shell, you could easily sink 20k into just metalwork.I'm amazed that a loom is that expensive.

At the end of the day, after your work, you will end up with a brilliant early driving 911. Priceless! Start by making it safe. After that just take your time to do the bits to get it to look 'passable' . I would say 'passable' will cost £25,000. Dont worry, your kids will get it to immaculate. Who knows, it may even be in your lifetime!

Depending on budget, if you want to make it showroom then I'd strip it and blast / chemical dip it, see what can be saved. Then rebuilt using NOS parts with all the Chrome getting redone etc. Otherwise, strip it, refurb what you can and replace what you can on a cheap budget. Once done, a vinyl wrap.

It's a borderline economical repair isn't it? Needs a lot of bodywork! I'd have no idea how much it would cost - 10, 20, 30 grand? Who knows until you pull it all apart and start poking at it with something pointy. Of course it would be a shame to break it, but it's pretty far gone before you even look at the electrics or an engine rebuild. Your call boss! :)

Much more proper British:-) Lovely car and whatever you choose replacement panel-wise you'll evidently do a stunning job. It's all there... So it's 10K well invested! Good luck with your channel's growth!

There's only one way to tackle this shell. Strip it to a bare shell and send it for dipping. That way you see warts and all, and you can see everything that needs replacing. Around £2000 but worth every penny. Personally think you could do it for about £35,000

Just remove the side panels, drop engine down, remove petrol tank, its not that hard on these old cars. Only then you can assess if bones are ok & is it worth saving. If you are going to restore it learn body work skills, welding cutting, grinding, carving etc. She mostly need body repair, paint & coating + complete set of electrical wiring (rest of the ecu stuff is working fine), and that gear lever bushings are torn apart (easy fix).

If you enjoy the sheet metal replacement/bodywork/painting and could see yourself actually completing the repairs and not letting it turn into a disassembled "garage potato", then get to work. Personally I see a project that will cost more than a solid car can be purchased for. If it were mine, I would start searching for the next owner. If it were an S or a Carrera RS then restoration would definitely be in order.

All the comments below saying £10K or £15K have never worked on a Porsche. Parts costs are staggering! An engine rebuild alone could easily cost you more than you paid for the car. The 911T was the bottom trim line for Porsches of that era, and it sold in the neighborhood of £6,000 when it was new. It is *not* any kind of a rare classic car, there were many thousands of these sold. Instead of putting another £30 into that car, use it instead to buy a good set of trainers and run away from it as fast as you can.

Engine has to come out anyway. May as well do a modest overhaul. The sloppy shift play can probably be fixed with a simple bushing. Rennline makes aluminum floorboards and dash bits. Good luck. You paid about the same price for that 70' that I paid for my 79' 930.

Tbh I’ve seen & restored worse over my 45 years as a panel beater, welder & paint refinisher. Strip everything out, label & box everything. Get the body media blasted (not sand/grit) by a reputable company. That’s the best place to begin. I’m retired now and not in the best health or I’d have offered some help. Try & find someone who is proficient with lead loading, keep the plastic filler to a minimum. Find a reputable paint shop to do the eye candy - not some back street cobble shop. The mechanicals if you’re proficient you could do a lot yourself and find a good engine/trans builder if you don’t feel confident yourself. Take your time unless as a project it puts you off. It’s surprising how quickly you can see results. As a Porsche owner I think theirs more pro’s than con’s for seeing it through. It has the makings of a very sweet car, as I said earlier, if I was in better shape physically, I would love to get involved. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Like most vehicles in this condition, the repair is much more costly than an already restored one. Drive it into the ground and at last save the drivetrain and wheels.

I have an old long hood 912 myself, so I say save it, but I think most of the estimates in the comments will fall FAR short of what you will need to spend to make this a SAFE reliable driver. Unless you can do most of the body work yourself, labor is going to be a pot of gold. Not to mention finding decent parts for replacements. The body panels are one thing, but when you start getting into all the NLA little bits that, will add up so fast you'll get dizzy thinking about it. Still, they aren't making any new old ones, and if you do it right, you could get most of what you put back into it in 10 - 20 years. Labor of love, not for the money. Go all in or part it out and be done with it.
