HERE IS HOW THEY RIP YOU OFF - Ep. 7.129

A viewer sent correspondence to me showing how a new car dealer gave him a FINAL PRICE on an internet advertised car - and then when asked to confirm it, raised the price several thousand dollars.

The difference between a car dealership and a brothel, is that the brothel is honest enough to tell you up front you're going to get screwed and pay for it. Pardon the language.

My Dad was a mechanic and a furniture salesman for 40 years. I go with him when he buys a new car just for the pure entertainment of it. The car salesman never knew what hit him. When the salesman comes back from talking to the "Manager" My Dad says "let me run it by my Wife who's on several car sites on the internet right now". He would pick up his phone and pretend to call his wife ( my Mom) "She says there is a better deal down the street" but she wasn't really on the phone at all. lol

If you have a good selling item and a basic understanding of Margins for that industry. Nothing else matters. People who want something for free need to visit the church of their choosing. Assuming all salesperson are ripping people is hardly the case. Most corp dealships dont care because they sit in the office and make the sales dog do the work. People Just need to find a decent salesperson that's been around and wants everyone to be happy. One way You can identify them by how much they say yes to a reasonable request. But unfortunately most car dealships have massive turnover. And the new guy doesn't know what's exactly right, so he eats what management feeds him.

I loved to watch my Dad negotiate for vehicles. He was looking at a new car for my Step-Mom. It had a moon roof. He told them he didn't need it and that they could keep the moon roof, they wound up taking the price of the (built in, factory) moon roof off the price of the car. He then asked them how much they were going to pay him, per year, to advertise their company. They said they weren't, of course, so he made them take the dealer "badge" off the car as well!

My dad decided to buy a used car from a dealership, he wanted me to come to see how to negotiate a good deal ( I was in sales for a couple years) I said why not. He had looked at the car before, I don't remember the price maybe 12,500, this was early 1990's. I think it was a Mercury Sable, Salesman comes out my dad says if I want to buy this car today what is the best price you can do? The goes back in side comes out says $12k. My dad is impressed with himself smiling and nodding at me, like see I already saved $500. We go inside sit at the desk, Salesman is starting to get all the paperwork together, my dad says watch this, salesman gets back, my dad says if I pay in cash (cashier check) today will you knock another $500 off? Salesman takes his walk comes back and said, yeah his manager is okay with that. My dad had to go outside to get something. I am just sitting there smiling, salesman says what's going on? I told him I am in sales and have a question for you? He says go ahead. I was watching this, and I would have made a cash offer for 9k. All he really said was, you should have been the one buying the car. I just gave him the universal the secret is say with me nod. My dad was telling everyone how he got one over on the dealer, he got the car for a thousand dollars less then they were asking, he knows how to talk to them, etc. A few tips, when you go in to a place with salespeople, especially commissioned, they know exactly what they can sell something for and still get a commission, they don't need to talk to a manager or a finance guy, that is just a show they put on. If they are having a rough month they may just ask the manager to come over to help close the deal. The manager is here, they must be giving us a really good deal. Used car at a dealer, make a low offer, if they say no, leave your number with the offer amount, that salesperson may take the commission hit on that sale if it means he can get an override or bonus. Right now it is a sellers market, so you are going to be stuck, but when it changes, just things to keep in mind.

I love going car shopping with my wife. She can bring the sales manager to his knees. We have walked out of several dealerships after a couple of hours of “no I can’t do that, but I can offer you this”. The last car she bought, she test drove to another dealership down the road and told the salesperson that she was going to buy it unless he offered her a better deal on another car she was thinking about. While he was getting her the keys to test drive that car for a couple of days, I returned the first car and got her trade in back. I told the salesperson what was going on, and he begged for another opportunity to “make a deal”. As it turned out, she didn’t like the second car, and ended up getting a very good deal on the first car, and a better trade in. Not the first car salesperson she gave nightmares.

First thing I say is, "I want to talk to the person who has the final say. If you can't then get the one who can." I tell them I want the "Out the door" price. I won't talk trade in or any financing until I get the out the door price in writing. I laugh when they say, "That's not how it works." and reply, "well that's the only way I buy anything." I never trade in and arrange my own financing. 0% financing is a big scam.

Bought my last truck in 2016, was a leftover 2015 so they wanted to move it. MSRP was a tad over $46,000. Sale price was $36,000. Told the salesman straight up. If I like the test drive I have a number in my head. I liked the vehicle so I told him my number was to include tax, title, dealer prep, basically anything that would cost money to buy the vehicle $30,000. 4 trips to the "Manager" later they agreed to my price. 2 hours after that the finance manager tried to mess with me telling me I didn't qualify for a loan. I just laughed at her after all who doesn't get pre approved and know their credit score before buying? Anyway they finally presented me with the purchase agreement only to find the price they had on it was $30,750. Made them do the contract over. In the end I got an excellent truck at a reasonable price.

It's weird, I guess things have changed...I bought my first car, from a dealership, in 2003. There was an "internet price" for a Grand Cherokee on their website. I called to make sure the car was there, printed out the ad and went to the dealership. The price I had was about $2,000 less than the sticker price. It was the lowest price in the city for that model with a V8 and a sunroof. The sale guys couldn't believe they listed the car so low and went to go check. I'm 99% sure it wasn't an act because they came back and looked upset. I bought the car for the advertised price... 3 days later I totaled the car when some lady hit me. Her insurance gave me $3000 more than what I paid and I ended up getting a nicer model.

Once had the bait and switch on a new travel trailer and I told the sales guy absolute max I would spend. My family is with me, including my 12 year old daughter. Sales guy starts adding a bunch of fees to the bottom line. Daughter sees the look on my face and says "Dad lets go". We all stood up and walked out of the office. He chased us to my truck along with the sales manager. They were knocking on my truck windows and telling me how I would regret leaving. It was a wonderful bonding experience for me and the family.

Went to buy a new car one day. I had researched the prices online and at several dealers. This dealer had the one I wanted, equipped as I wanted, in the right color. I knew what my trade in was worth, and I made him a reasonable offer "OUT THE DOOR." He said "We have a deal." I thought I must have offered him too much money, to myself. I called my wife and told her I had just bought her a new car. She said well great. When the salesman came back with the paperwork for me to sign, I noticed my "OUT THE DOOR" price had been inflated by several hundred dollars. I told him OUT THE DOOR means OUT THE DOOR get my old car keys which they "could not find" The sales manager came up to me and told me I was stupid if I didn't take the deal. I told him "YOU Want Me TO BUY A CAR FROM YOU AND YOU"RE CALLING ME STUPID? I'm calling the cops to report my stolen car. I left and bought the same car elsewhere at my price.

I had an experience just last week of a similar nature. In my case the advertised price included many rebates but they were mostly rebates that I didn't qualify for. Unfortunately I spent hours at the dealership, drove the car, was assured by the salesman that the price was correct. When he came back with the final paperwork I had my checkbook out and was ready to write the check for the down payment. The price came back about $1500 higher than the web advertised price. I got up and left with very little comment. He asked me what I wanted as I was leaving. I said "I want to buy a car somewhere else". I wasn't going to wait for the back and forth stage show that was most likely about to commence. I just noticed that their website no longer advertises the price including all of the rebates that you are unlikely to qualify for. Two of them were actually if you had a car damaged in a hurricane.

I just took the engraving because the engraving was much less than all the other fees they were going to try to have me pay at other dealerships.

After an hour in traffic, and then a test drive, they TRIPLED the sales price. @13:29 BAIT & SWITCH - "Oops, that's a Typo. When I went to get my keys the service agent presented me with a bill....now I am old but not that old (66) . I came unglued, the service agent says he has got to get approval from his manager, in which he comes back and says no charge. I checked the vin and of course it wasn't . He was not going to budge or admit he was lying. So I told him ok, figured the trade at the correct age of the car and made the deal. He called me a few days later and told me I got you on that deal. I laughed and informed him, no you didn't, call around and ask what your trade in at the right age is worth. Oh and I knew you were going to switch the new tires on your trade in to older ones so I adjusted for it. He was silent for a minute and then burst out laughing.

I agree with everything said here, but, there are reputable dealers out there. A couple of years ago we were looking for a new vehicle and had decided on a particular brand/model. Stopped at a dealer in a nearby town and got an in writing, final, out-the-door price. It was a decent deal. Went to the dealer in our town and sat down to talk. The sales guy knew we didn't want any of the fluffy stuff and presented his 'best' deal. It was better than the first we received. He then started what I thought was going to be his big sales pitch - ended up he told us to wait two days to buy the car because the manufacturer was coming out with an incentive plan and that the dealership was reducing their fees. In the end, he saved us right at $6,000. So have heart, there are good folks out there.

Back circa 1978, my wife and I decided we wanted a "family car". We each had a good, dependable vehicle but mine, a compact sedan was 11 years old and she had a 71 Gremlin, not exactly the best with 2 kids. We decided on a GM mid size, either a Buick or Olds, used but not more than 2 years old. Found a 2 year old low , mileage Cutlass,, clean, ran great, no major damage but it did have a few minor issues. Needed wiper blades, tires were marginal, damaged tail light lens, and a few others. When the salesman said *let's go in and take care of this". I'd done my research, yes without internet, and knew what it was worth, what it would take to get it into acceptable shape, and knew exactly how much I was willing to pay. As we walked into his office, I told him "we're going to do this a little different. You figure out the best, lowest you'll take for it and I'll either write you a check and drive it home, or I'll leave without it". He gave me a funny look and agreed. He sat down, did some figuring and gave me a price that would be just barely okay without any of the necessary repairs. I got up and turned to leave. He asked why and I just said "too high". Then the words I still remember. "Wait a minute, I can do a little better." I looked at him and told him that when we came in I told him how I would do this and he had agreed. I told him I had been lied to because what he quoted was NOT the lowest price and that at that point I would not buy it, even if he dropped the price to $100. I left, drove to the Oldsmobile dealership, picked out the car l wanted, gave him the same line, he agreed and gave me a price. I hesitated, almost left, but agreed even though it was about $60 more than I had settled on. But it had the fancy wheels I hadn't figured in. I drove it home.

I very briefly worked for a dealership in the mid '90s that was "compliant with State law" by listing the EDP fee (up to 10% of the MSRP) along with various other dealer charges on the window price sticker. Very few ever questioned what EDP stood for, assuming it was yet another tax of some kind. It actually stood for Extra Dealer Profit. They also charged a dealer prep fee of a couple of hundred bucks that amounted to a CARWASH to remove the protective plastic films that keep bugs and whatnot off the paint while transporting. Now I'm not surprised that said dealership (Team Baem, Appleton WI) is now defunct.

I do not know of any car today that does not come with floor mats as part of the basic package and is included in the MSRP. Also windows are tinted at the factory. That is totally bogus. Before the internet and computers, I was taught to go and look at the cars in a dealership on a Sunday when they were closed. Found cars I was interested in and found all the features listed on the window sticker. Then during the week I negotiated with the various dealers over the phone, and got a firm price before going in to the dealer. If they deviated from that price when I arrived, I simply got up and left. Usually, me standing up and walking to the door was enough for them to agree to the original "firm price." The only complication was the trade in value. I would look up the wholesale price of the car I was trading in and if they were in that range I would accept it.

Low price new cars are not profitable. Dealers tend to lose money on them. That is why they want you to get add on items for a high profit vehicle. VTR is window etching with some type of registration to find the car somehow. Floor mats are typically optional, though $200 floormats should be premium weather resistant rubber mats. Doc fees are a scam.

I found that doing my homework on car, model, accessories, price, etc. before I go to the dealer at 5 or 6 pm on the last day of the month (to help them make their sales quota) makes a big difference in getting the best deal. After I make my offer (which is always low) and the salesperson says they have to talk to the manager, I say "If you can't make decisions, bring the person that makes decisions here and we'll deal. I don't play telephone games." Then when we get real close to what I'm willing to pay, I tell them that I will leave and think about it. They never let me leave that close to the end their quota-month (unless they had a very good month). I usually get a good deal -- but expect to spend at least a couple of hours negotiating, buying, and doing the paperwork of the sale.

I walked from a deal at document signing for similar reasons. I was 30 pages into the contract (out of maybe 50 pages) signing; they had already taken possession of my SUV, removed the plates, and put them on the new SUV; they had already put my down payment check into the safe; it was nearly an hour after closing, as it took us a while to come to a deal. As I was signing, I noticed that terms had changes from when I discussed the agreed-upon deal with the salesperson. I stopped signing and told them there was a mistake. They wouldn't correct it, saying that the deal had changed. Of course, my response was the deal was off. They did nearly everything they could to pressure me into continuing with the sale, including telling me it was too late because I was in the process of signing. I finally got them to bring my car back around to me, put my stuff back in, and put the plates back on. As I was about to drive away, the sales manager and several other employees came out and surrounded my car refusing move to let me leave, demanding I come back in and finish the sale. And this was at one of those giant Dodge dealerships...not some fly-by-night used car lot. Unbelievable experience. Oh, and because my check was in the safe, they would have to give my money back on the next day, which turned into two weeks.

Come in for a deal" Dad went in traded in his 2 year old 250 mile car and came home with a new car, 3 levels Bronze, Gold and Platinum insurance and a mortgage. His other was paid off. (he paid it - being a man of means.) It was larger and had GPS. I flew in and helped him set up the GPS to take him to food, fraternity, Radio Shack and home. The only places he needed. Within 2 months after that he brushed a car at the food store and didn't know he did. He got home and a police man was waiting. Both of them found paint and that was the last day dad drove. He didn't trust himself. I bought the car and found out his traded in car was never on his paperwork. And Bronze and Platinum covered more than he or I would ever need as they overlapped. The Head Finance office was in the process of having an investigation on Sales & Service stealing cars and forcing people to buy. I got free Bronze and Platinum for life of the car I still have. I suppose the dealer was turned up side down for a while. Dad was fed coffee with sugar and a Doughnut. He was diabetic. Weak and not in good mind upon signing.

That story reminds me of when my father was a used car salesman back in the early 80's. The dealer had a listed price.. which was 'x' above what they bought the car for and/or spent in repairs to the car. The 'x' was a specific profit amount for the dealership plus commission for the salesman. If the commission portion was $1,000.. that was the portion that the dealership was willing to negotiate with. The salesman's job was to try to keep as much of the $1,000 (in this case) as possible. If the potential buyer wanted $500 off of the listed price.. the salesman would 'go back and talk to the boss.' What they really did was go back to the office and kick back and watch a bit of TV or drink a cup of coffee or chat about their most recent fishing trip or whatever. After a bit of time the salesman would come back out with all grins and say that he had negotiated with the boss on their behalf and had gotten them that $500 discount if they were willing to sign right now. Car got sold, dealer made profit, and salesman made $500. Let's just say he was good at it.. made salesman of the year for 4 years straight with 'most cars sold' before we moved due to unrelated reasons (divorce.)

Then went in and was told they could do it for that, but came back and my trade was not worth enough. "OK, I will got to dealer down the street with my second choice car who CAN give me that for trade in." Suddenly they CAN match it, but this car has dealer add ons that raise the price. "Ok, I will go to dealer who will sell me without the add ons in next town over." Suddenly guy from back comes out "what can we do to sell you this car today?" I say, "give it to me at X price, like I asked and give me X for trade in like its worth." excuses, we can't make money, don't have one like that in stock blah blah blah. "OK, not my problem, but dealer X is much closer to the deal I need to go forward, I will go back to them." Long story short, I eventually walked out with the deal I asked for when I walked in. Still had to force them to remove things they tried to hide on the contract. All in, it took 4 days over 3 weeks and 3 dealerships to get what I knews was fair. The best tactic is getting up to leave and when needed actually doing it. This was my third trip back to this dealer, I had already walked out twice. Using my hourly wage for the time and subtracting it from savings I still saved Thousands!

This is why I bought my Civic using Craig's list. Had it for 3 years now and I'm happy to say it's still a great car!

9:00 - they want you in the door. Absolutely. That's what all those scratch-and-win mailers are for. Every single one of them is a "winner" by the scratch-off (they're identical under the silver paint). Its the unique ID printed on it somewhere (usually next to the address) that actually matters. But if you read the fine print where you get a prize simply for showing up--spin a wheel, whatever--take it in. Check the minimum prize and calculate your gas, if you come out ahead, do it. Head on in. Just be prepared to say "no thanks" a lot. I did this once, as I saw that the rules were that as long as you showed up, you spun a prize wheel, and the minimum prize was something like a $2 bill. So not a big prize, but non-zero. Talked with a nice lady and she openly admitted to me that she was required to ask me three times if I was interested in a new car and all I had to do was say "no" three times and she'd get me my prize and let me go. I ended up walking out with just the $2 (probably covered my gas, tbh), but there was still a chance I could have won more. I asked what their largest payout had been that day and I don't remember for sure any more, but I got an answer (I think it was $100, with several $10-$30 winners). Had another one one time where it was a "call this number" and find out. Which I did, was told I was actually a winner for one of the larger prizes (was some deal where they bring you out to a cabin in the woods and try and sell you a timeshare, but do a door-prize of things like TVs, cars, and computers--everyone that shows up gets something--had that confirmed several times). Was told I'd get a call back to schedule when I would actually attend. Sadly, never heard back. But I wasn't out more than a 15 minute phone call.

Lots of places in Las Vegas charge $799 in doc fees. I don’t buy cars from dealers in Vegas. CARMAX Charges $299. I shop there.

It helps if you enjoy the process. I don't mind sitting there for four hours and walking out. Done it more than once. But I'm not one to get emotionally invested in getting a new car. Salesmen always use those kind of emotional hooks, and it just doesn't do anything for me. Crunch the numbers. If it works, great. If not, oh well. I still have a functioning car, so I'm not out ANYTHING (except time). With sports cars, they really try to work the emotional angle. I just like driving. The car itself isn't as important. I get as much enjoyment out of my truck as I did with my Mustang GT.

So for the most part at my old dealership we would “desk” our own deals. If you walked in and asked me the price on the vehicle and I thought I could get away with it, I would give you the original MSRP before the manufacturer discount packages. Then we’d haggle from that point. I’d go all the way down until I hit the point that I was no longer making a commission off the selling price, then I’d grab a manager and ask “what do you want to do? We’re down to your profit, not mine.” That was generally about 300 over invoice.

Great video, they do exactly the same thing in the UK with car sales, and those places sell hundreds of cars every year in small dealerships, the city ones sell over a thousand cars each every year each store and the franchise chains sell 10, 20, 30 and 50 thousand cars every year each brand/corporation, sometimes more..

A Chrysler dealership in Southern California charges $1,295.00 for LoJack on a new Chrysler 300 sedan. The trim of the sedan is just next to the base model. I may be wrong, but I think thieves may be more interested in my 20 year old Honda Prelude than this new Chrysler 300. I use a steering wheel lock to prevent theft on my Honda. I paid only a few ten bucks for the lock. And it has been providing the vehicle security I need.

I virtually "built" a car online, choosing only the options I wanted. When finished, I was given a list of local stealerships to contact to arrange the purchase. Six stealerships would not give me a price, only coy games and runarounds. Several tried to sell me anything but what I wanted, even last year's model. I finally reached one that gave me an actual price on what I wanted, so I bought it there. Their service department is another matter.

When they give you a price and you start to write a check for the full amount they raise the price. It happened to me every time I tried it. They make their money by giving you a loan. I hate dealers and car salespeople. I buy a low mileage car now that is one or two years old from a private person now. No sales tax if you do that in Arizona. No used car salespeople as well . No doc fees. Car still under warranty. Dealers have a lot of tricks they will pull. I think the last one had a listening device at his desk as he kept up getting up and leaving for some bullshit excuse. One time he left the desk and then I said loud enough for any listening device he probably had to hear me say to the wife "lets go I don't like what is going on". 9 seconds later a guy came over to tell me the salesman will be right back. They want to know want we are talking about to see how things are going.

I'm surprised it's not common knowledge, the "I'll go talk to my manager" dodge is to specifically used to tire you out and wear you down - the longer you stay at the dealership the less likely you are to walk away. Decades ago I was car shopping. After a great deal of discussion, the salesman left to speak 'to the manager'. After a couple of minutes I realized he had left behind a crucial piece of paper. I grabbed it and went looking for him. I found him in the back hallway smoking a cigarette. He said manager was finishing up with someone and he had to wait a few minutes.

Back when I was shopping for my 2002 Camaro I walked into the dealership looked at a few cars. Didn’t even get to test drive one and asked the guy how much. Told the guy we weren't looking to buy that day. Said he couldn't tell me how much until we had picked out options. OK, fair enough. Still couldn't tell me. He had to talk to the other guy. Then said he had to run my credit. Not sure what this had to do with the price of the car (monthly payment sure, but not the price). Still wouldn't give me a number. Had to go to the guy in the back. Finally got a number from him, thanked him for his time, and started to leave. He came screaming at us across the showroom floor. Sales manager came out asking what's wrong. We explained to him and he said come back when we were ready. Went to another dealer the next week. Got to test drive a few. Told the guy what options I wanted. Said the sales managers had gone home and they couldn't give me a price. Fine. Call me tomorrow and if I like what I hear we'll be back. So they call, gave me a number, told him we'd be right out. Before we could leave the house, he calls back and says they can't do it at that number. They wanted $500 more. I asked why. They said I might not come get the car (custom order from factory). But you have my deposit? He said I could most likely get it back. At this point I'm thinking if I dont come get the car at the original price and I don't come get the car at the new price, it is no different to me. The only way it mattered was when I picked it up, I was now paying $500 more. Told them no thanks. Eventually got the car from another dealer that didn't play games.
