Herculoids Explored - True Progenitor of Sword & Sorcery Cartoons In The World, An Underrated Gem

Ойын-сауық

If you were a kid during the 60s, Saturday morning cartoons probably had a special place in your heart. The variety was delightful, and even though the animated shows lacked the finesse and style that was developed later in the 80s and 90s, they were still fun to watch. From the spinach-powered sailorman to the hilarious antics of The Flintstones, the content was brimming with talent and the 60s went on to deliver some sensational characters that are loved even today.
Amidst the wide wealth of heart-warming cartoon shows from the 60s, we decided to bring you our pick from the lot. Some have faded away with time, while others got developed further in the years to come, but all of them entertained kids with their pure, unadulterated episodes. In this video, let us celebrate the past by walking down memory lane and revisiting the days of simplicity and joyous animated content!

A tiny correction: the Herculoids predates that cable TV era. This was network TV that was broadcast through the air similar to radio and could be picked up by "Rabbit Ears" free of charge without having to pay for cable. The Herculoids was from the golden age of free TV.

Or an outdoor antenna, if you lived 30 or more miles from your local station, as my family did. I think in the intro she meant the cable reruns that happened in the '80s, '90s, and '00s, first on USA, then Cartoon Network and Boomerang. She did get the original year correct - 1967. 8 additional episodes were added to the original 17 for the 1968 season. For a total of 50 cartoons for the first incarnation. But it was a Saturday morning - not Sunday morning - cartoon.

I'm 62, and I remember seeing "The Herculoids" on TV when it was new, and it became an instant favorite. When I saw "Avatar" in 2009, the basic themes of "The Herculoids" immediately came to mind, with the new twist that it was Earth doing the invading. That said, I would like to see a reboot of "The Herculoids;" either animated or even live action. But I would also be worried that it would not be done 'right.'

I watched Herculoids in rerun in the early-to-mid 80's, and it was always a segment in part of a block of Hanna-Barbera cartoons, and it was always beyond weird. It felt like reading a single issue of a comic book, without having read the previous issues. Who were these people/things? Why were they in space? How did they come to live together? Why were they constantly under attack? WTF is a space rhinoceros, and why does it have so many legs? None of these things were ever addressed, and I always felt like if I could just watch the entire series some of it would make sense. The occasional insertion of an episode of Space Ghost made me think that there must be a bigger story arc, or at least some origin stories, but nope. It was just action for the sake of action. I loved the visuals then and now, looking like a Jack Kirby drawing come to life, and I enjoyed every episode that I saw, but it always felt just a little bit like a fever dream.

Being an over 55 nerd from waaay back, I watched them in all their incarnations. The monster turned hero trope and scifi vs nature is so prevalent in this show, and something that always got me watching. What always got me more though was 20% dialogue, and 80% screams, grunts, shrieks and explosions. I love it so much. Chefs kiss to this video, thanks again for this :)

Having watched the Herculoids since I was about nine, I've been hooked on it ever since, and I especially liked the theme of nature versus technology. Still superior entertainment 56 years later. (My age.) I was born in 1967, so I prefer the original series. Still tops even now. 😸👍😁👍🐲❤🐉💚🐉💜

Alex Toth was a creative genius behind every character that went far beyond the drawing board and the comics page. He always had an ace up his sleeve to really make it all stick. 😎

As a kid growing up in the 80s, I first saw the Herculoids on TV as part of 60 Laser-Blasting minutes of Space Stars, along with Space Ghost, The Teen Force, and Astro & The Space Mutts. When my Mother & Stepfather told me that they used to watch the Herculoids & Space Ghost when they were younger, it blew my Little mind away! As such, we all watched Space Stars every Saturday morning. Good Times!

I haven't thought about them nearly 60 years! I did not know they reappeared in the 80's and 90's. I was too busy earning a living by then. The late 60's was the golden age of Saturday morning cartoons. Another of my favorite but short-lived series in '66 with quirky characters was The Mighty Heroes. The bumbling heroes of that series were Strong Man, Diaper Man, Tornado Man, Cuckoo Man and Rope Man who always managed to stumble their way to victory in the end.

Herculoids was my favorite cartoon. A Laser ray shooting flying giant dragon. A giant rock ape almost indestructable. Tundro, a rhino that shoots energy rocks through his snout and almost indestructable. Gloop and Gleep can stretch as well as break apart. Multiply and stretch.

Timeframe: I'm 65. I worked with my dad on summer vacations as a kid. We fixed TV's (and etc.). Had to work Saturday mornings. Now, color TVs needed a lot of adjustment back in the day, each color gun had to be precisely aligned, and it just so happened at 10:30 on Saturday mornings, a TV would need a 30 minute adjustment, never failed. By sheer coincidence, that was when the Herculoids was on. Please, Alex Toth's masterpiece, the greatest H-B cartoon ever made. What are the Herculoids? Only the greatest, most OP off-the-charts Hanna-Barbera cartoon ever. This was during the mid-70s reruns, but I've been from Ruff and Reddy to Jabber Jaw, and there is no other. The best, period, full stop.

My all time favorite cartoon. As mentioned below, no matter what 'riches" Amzot may possess, you would think the villains would eventually say, "Amzot? Naah I'm good. Let's go tangle with the X-men or the Avengers". Also as mentioned below, where did Zandor and Tara find Igoo, Zak, Tundro, Gloop and Gleep? Love the Herculoids.

I loved this cartoon growing up. Herculoids was a staple to the Saturday morning line-up! Just pure adventure fun...primitive beings teaming up and battling hostile take-overs. What keeps me from subscribing - and I don't want to be a downer, but it would be great to have someone that actually grew up with these cartoons narrating... a lot (maybe most) of this script is obviously read from Wikipedia and sounds like a younger niece read this. Even references to other things like pronouncing Shire vs Shi'ar....subtle; the generations that appreciate narrative and originality are the ones listening more to this. Just a thought.
