Herbert C. Jackson Tour

A personal tour on the Herbert C. Jackson great lakes shipping vessel. This ship, launched in 1959 was first Chief Engineered by Earl Westrick. The launch was witnessed by his young daughter Nancy who arranged for this once in a lifetime tour of a beautiful ship. The video is long and likely only family will want to see it, but I wanted to share it with everyone.

I was a guest passenger on the Herbert C Jackson in the 1970s. My wife and I along with parent George R Reiss & Marge Reiss. We spent a week on the ship. One of several trips on other Interlake freighters. Brings back memories of wonderful trips on the Great Lakes and also the St Laurance Seaway on a Canadian vessel the MV OTTERCLIFF HALL to Seven Islands Quebec and back. The guest quarters were wonderful and food we ate was better than any cruise ship experience you could imagine. I am am a retired airline Captain so I spent most of the trip up on Wheel House observing. Thank for this video Capt John E Reiss Morriston Florida

The Fitz was 1 year older than the Jackson was. Had she not sank, she might have been converted to being a self unloader and still be sailing.

Nice of interlake to allow this, and to see her steam turbines, a few years after this video, she had the steam power replaced with a pair of MaK Diesel engines , allowing this beautiful ship to sail for many more years

Fun little historical vignette...I delivered the Cleveland Plain Dealer to Herbert C. Jackson in Shaker Hts. for many years back in the sixties. He had a wonderful model of this boat in a display box in his living room, dramatically lit and visible to me every morning during the predawn hours as I passed in front of the picture window. Once while collecting for my paper route I asked him about the model, and he modestly explained that as an executive of the Pickands Mather Shipping Company a boat had been christened in his name. I was perhaps 12 years old at the time and asked him if he thought that some day I could get a job working on the boat. "Come see me when you're 18 and I'll look into it," was his answer. Well, sure enough upon graduating from high school I returned to his home and knocked on the door. Not only did he remember the conversation (and he was quite elderly at this point...probably 80 at least) but he promptly pulled a few strings and got me a job. As it turned out I didn't work on the Jackson, but rather the SS EG Grace. Still and all I literally earned enough money in one year to pay for my entire college education. This video tour of the Jackson not only reminds me of my days on the Grace but also of that remarkable gentleman who honored a promise made seven years earlier to a wet-behind-the-ears kid.

My Grandfather Captain Roy Francis Wuest was Captain of the Herbert C. Jackson, and retired around 1967 I believe. I have a few items like his Captains hat from the ship and his T~Square. I would board this boat as boy. As an engineer for the railroad I occasionally see her docked at Presque Isle in Toledo....

That lady said her dad was chief engineer when they brought her out. He worked for my dad who was fleet chief when they built the Jackson. My brother Bill was 3rd assistant engineer on the Jackson at that time. My oldest brother Jim sailed on her as chief later on.

Thanks for sharing this video. I was just curious about those life preservers & why does it say Wilm, Del on them? I'm assuming the ship is registered in Wilm. Del. but please lemme know if I'm wrong. P.S. I live in Wilm. Del.
