Our Herbert C. Jackson navigating the winding Cuyahoga River

At 690-feet, our Herbert C. Jackson is one of the largest River-Class vessels shuttling iron ore up the Cuyahoga River in the heart of Cleveland. It takes serious skills to navigate up and down the river. Watch how she backs into the turning basin to head out of the river.

There’s some skill involved there that is admirable to anyone.

The ore is loaded in Minnesota and brought down to Cleveland. He was waiting for an opening anchored at the old Hulett Dock in the Western outer harbor. That trip can take an hour. They move very slowly and carefully with all that weight. The ships have bow thrusters and they don’t need tugs any longer. On a windy day they might use one or two. Collision Bend is a work of art by a 800’ ship.

Love this! I can't wait to see all the "girls " from Interlake this coming 2023 season! I live in Wickliffe so I can see them anywhere from Toledo, Cuyahoga River, Fairport, Ashtabula and points in between! Thank you for sharing and taking care of your crews and ships!

She didn't travel very far from the ore dock to the mill. Is it more cost effective to use the freighter than to ship by train, thanks

That was just a staging area at the start of the video. The ore dock that loaded the ship is probably in Duluth, Minnesota.
