Just when the world thought they heard the last of Cher “Believe” drops and becomes the biggest hit of her career. Song still sounds good. I still think she has another huge hit in her. This song hit #1 in 31 countries. It was a massive global hit. One of the best selling songs of all time. I know at the time it was the biggest selling song by a female artist in the UK. Not sure if it’s still holds that title. Brilliant piece of work. Love this song.

"Believe" changed it all for Cher! The beginning of the "Cher effect" a.k.a. use of autotune in such a way. Amazing. Love this song.

This is what I’m talking about: yes it’s auto tune, but it’s not to cover bad vocals, it’s pure style and pure Cher. It may seem cliche now but I think this is the first time anyone had ever heard Autotune, so this was revolutionary. And as a young closeted person who discovered this song at 12 back in 2001, this song absolutely helped me along my journey of self-discovery. Cher was my first concert when I was 14 and I’ll never forget it.

Never underestimate the power of Cher. She's everything and the great thing about this song is it uses auto tune in the right places and as an effect, not a way to make someone sound better. Cher can sing and this is really a strong empowerment song if people would take the time to read the lyrics. Will always love this song.

Believe marks a deep transformation in Cher's personal life and her career. In pop music, Believe album was the hallway to more artists following the autotune effect in their performative work. Personally, I pretty much prefer her's rock/ballad vibes from the '80s. Believe song teaches us that all of us are resilient enough to survive after a heartbreak. Take care Anton :)

I Remember hearing just a snippet of this song and called a friend and had her listen. I told her this is gonna be a huge hit. Tada! This is the first song and artist to ever use that auto-tune process. So you can thank Cher or be mad that she invented no talent singers. haha. BTW! Take a look at Adam Lambert singing this song at the Kennedy Center Honors Cher. It's a totally different take on the song and lyrics.

Legend. We can never count someone out. Aretha did in mid 80's with "Freeway of Love" and a duet with George Michael "I knew you were waiting" HUGE. Natalie Cole, "Pink Cadillac" "Miss you like crazy" etc.....Then Cher. She also released "Strong enough" and we lost our minds on the dance floor. And a few years prior to "Believe" She released a Song Called "One" but it was a ballad. This was around the time when DJ's would take a ballad and remix the h$$ out of it. Toni Braxton, "Unbreak my heart" Deborah Cox, Tamia, and Mariah, Mariah, Mariah, Whitney Houston. They remixed Cher "One by One" The junior Vasquez mix - classic. calorie burner.

I think when we hear songs in the moment when they come out, we don’t usually appreciate them until we’ve either gone through some sh*t or been in the same situation as the song and they take on a new meaning or make the connection. And other times the rip is out of our location and we get taken back to the moment we heard them and we can remember how our room was laid out and the clothes we were wearing even down to the scents we would use.

It's Cher... what's not to love? She's such an awesome lady and performer. I was a little kid in the late '60s when I first heard her voice [with Sonny Bono on "I Got You Babe"] and have been one of her adoring fans ever since. In my vision of Heaven, God puts me in a wilderness setting, with a nice log home 100 feet from a tranquil lake surrounded by forest and tall, snow-capped mountains. Cher and Dolly Parton are on the porch swing, singing and smiling as Beth Hart stands next to the canoe, yelling at me to hurry the hell up because it's my turn to paddle. As I start to get in, Lzzy Hale shows up with sandwiches and beer, which is cool because the canoe is big enough for three. Paradise, baby! ;)

Yes this was some early use of auto tune, but it was only used to add a techno electronic effect to her voice as a special effect. Auto tune later got a bad rap for improving bad voices. But people forget that it has many uses where you can add special effects to voices for emphasis. This is actually a fantastic song with a lot of meaning.

This video was uploaded on my birthday - what a lovely gift! 🙏 I fell in love with this song when I got the "Believe" album, back in ... it must have been Christmas of '98? I was nine years old. 😊 I know every song on that album by heart, heh. Cher is an absolute queen, for eternity! 💖 Oh and I have to say, the use of the auto-tune was very tastefully done, in that it was never used to get her voice in tune - because she wouldn't need help with that. But it gave the song as a whole an otherworldly feel in a way, and made it very, very contemporary too. Damn, so many memories flowing back to me now ... 🥲

Believe is ONE of her most famous. Cher's been making hits since the 60s. I Got You Babe was massive in the 60s, as was If I Could Turn Back Time in the 80s (I would call this one her most famous). Believe was her most famous 90s song though. Auto-Tune however was already being used - no, she WASN'T the first - to help correct the odd flat or sharp note by some vocalists. But if you weren't careful with its use, it would sound fake and robotic (like it does in Believe). So in Believe, they deliberately mis-use auto-tune to get that robotic effect you hear.

This song is well known for the auto-tuning, because Cher was the first artist (I think) to use it in this way for "special effects" or the overall mysterious sound (for lack of a better word). It was not improve her actual voice; she certainly didn't need it for that!

According to her interview with Kelly Clarkson she did autotune because the chorus was horrible without autotune. And her and her producer tried so hard to figure out what was missing and mark her producer played with the pitch machine and that’s how autotune became a thing. Look up Chers interview on believe with Kelly Clarkson and Cher gives a whole history on how they made believe. Also Cher was dropped from her record label prior to working with mark and making believe.

Funny thing is that they knew that Cher would not need the autotuner to correct her singing. They just decided to go over the top with it by using extreme settings for the clipping effect. Littlle did they know that they released a genie out of the bottle to be the bane of every pop song there would be, but it isn't their fault. The song is structured to a decent pop song format. Verse - bridge - chorus - b- part - slowing down a bit, back to chorus - out.

Another huge comeback in a career full of them. Can't count the number of times she's been written off as done. Remarkable to have the biggest hit of her career at that age. Think she was 52 at the time. Easily the oldest female to have a #1 and that still holds true today. Things had improved in the 80's with Tina, Dionne, Aretha, and others having hits in their 40's, but we've backslid again with all the youth worship. In general, if you're a woman, turning 40 is the death knell for your hit making days.

In 1998, with this song, Cher earned the title of "oldest female to have a #1 hit song on the charts". She still holds that title today, 24 years later. It's pretty bad that she was about 52 at the time and there hasn't been a single woman older than that to get a #1 hit in that time. It shows the industry's ageism towarda women.

So glad you finally got to this one! Cher's global hit, bigger than just about any other artist...sold over 100 million singles / downloads. AutoTune is sometimes derided as designed for singers with weaker or substandard voices....Cher certainly doesn't fit that metric, but she decided to use it first and made a universal hit out of it. Others have followed using it, many with weaker voices. Cher, as only Cher can do let everyone know, through her decades of vocal mastery, chose to use this effect to enhance, not cover up....

It's not auto tune It's a vocoder. Auto tune is used to correct a singers vocals.

Yes it uses autone...but if you listen closely most of it is her actual deep voice. Like the chorus isn't autoned. They do it heavy anyone's live in the chorus because it the hardest part to sing. This song to me actually has the best balance of anyone and actual voice. Plus even during the autone, you can still hear a hint of her real voice behind it.
