Thank you Dave for sharing your story, it really resonated with me especially about dropping things (laughing face) I will be looking at some of the Facebook groups for support on my own RP journey as a blind photographer. Thank you Henshaws for giving a platform to the many eye-conditions out there and hopefully bring awareness and understanding to more sighted people.

Yes it's TRUE. People try to see if they can see what up with your eye. By lookin at them. 🙄. I have a 3/4 cane. But frighten to use it. As it makes me feel vulnerable. 😲😲

We find this is a feeling many people experience when first contemplating using a cane, it’s a big step. We sometimes suggest using it when you're away from your home, maybe a street away, you’ll be familiar with your own area. Why not use it folded up first, then progress to it unfolded, It’s a case of building up your confidence. It really is worth having a go, the benefits then become apparent. It’s worth trying it on public transport, areas with plenty of people, it helps make people aware, less need for explanation, etc. Then you’ll find you forget to put it away one day and arrive at home with it still out.

I train people to use canes and I would advise having a few sessions with your local Rehabilitation officer from the local authority to build up your skills and confidence whilst having their support. In my experience, when cane use becomes more familiar and the advantages to your travel and life may outweigh the negatives, then hopefully your confidence will come. When you walk with purpose, you will look more confident too to other people. You have your life to lead, and cane use can help people move forward with that. All the best, Andrea.

Thank you for your comment Matt. So sorry to hear you are feeling low, but we hope it helped a little to be able to hear someone in a similar position talk about their experiences. If you live in the Greater Manchester area, please get in touch to see if we can support you.

I've also got RP but a different type. My vision has been poor from birth and never had any clear sight l. Always struggled with it and still do. Totally get not wanting to go out as I avoid it more and more because its just too stressful

We agree that going out can be stressful when you are living with sight loss, and the COVID restrictions have made this even worse. Please don’t feel like you are alone though, as there are people who can support you with your independence.
