LYRICS
Well, the sun is surely sinkin’ down
But the moon is slowly risin’
So this old world must still be spinnin’ ’round
Yes, and I still love you
So close your eyes
You can close your eyes
It’s all right
I don’t know no love songs
And I can’t sing the blues anymore
Yes, but I can sing this song
And you can sing this song when I’m gone
It won’t be long before another day
We’re gonna have a good time
And no one’s gonna take that time away
You can stay as long as you like
Only close your eyes
You can close your eyes
It’s all right
Oh, I don’t know no love songs
And I can’t sing the blues anymore
Sure, but I can sing this song
Yes, and you can sing this song when I’m gone

I am quite certain that I have never publicly Commented on KZread and only limited posts on other social media platforms. However, I have been a James Taylor devotee since 1969 and I have been to scores of his concerts over the years I just have to add a comment. My three girls were brought up on his music and my grandchildren are listening to it now, most recently as the center focus of my wife’s departure from this earth 12 days ago. She (Cloma) and I talked about this song a lot but in the context of being played and recognized at my funeral… Never thinking she would pass before me. Anyway… A beautiful song, a beautiful rendition by father and son in a song that’s seared (in the best of ways) into my memory and soul. Thank you for a lifetime of music, James.

You and Cloma seem to have had a most beautiful relationship and your soulmate will always be walking by your side in spirit. James Taylor always seemed like such a low key, loving person and his music gives me such joy and pause to introspect the meaning of my existence.

This song is so special to me, my mother was hospitalized June 1st, 2013, after several hard falls in 2012 & 2013, her kidneys stopped working, due to blockages in both intestines. I sat by her bed in ICU with my sisters and we sang to her often, this was one of my favorite songs to sing her, when she was in a coma. 27 surgeries and over 5 months in hospital, with a relapse of C-Diff in 2016, it’s 2023 and she is still here, she has been caretaking our dad who has dementia 🙏🙏🙏

My husband and soulmate would sing this song to me, on a guitar that he hand crafted. He was such a handsome, brilliant and talented man, who captured my heart from the first moment I saw him. We'd sit in the dunes of Hampton, on a blanket, drinking wine under the stars. The waves and smell of the salt water lulled us into such passion. He died from depression in the mid 90's, and he took half of my heart and soul with him. I still mourn the loss of him, and never remarried because no one else could hold a candle to him. We had 2 beautiful children who gave me the purpose to keep on fighting for life, each and every day. I couldn't listen to this song for years because it made me cry. 28 yrs later, I can appreciate the beauty of it, and remember how great my love for him was, and still is. My soul is still connected to his soul, and I have faith I will hold him in my arms again, in Heaven. Bittersweet for me

My parents are both gone now but after my mom died, my dad and I got to see James Taylor together. Every time he’d sing one of my mom’s favorites my dad and I would hug and cry. It is such a beautiful memory for me. My dad was born the same day and year as JT. He had ALS at the time but wasn’t diagnosed yet. The stark contrast between his level of functioning and JT was striking to me. He died only a few years later. Can’t wait to see my parents again on the other side. ❤

This version is lovely, just right, easy, not hurried like all the other versions, including James' many live performances. This is how this song should be sung, at about 66bpm. It gives you time to savor the melody and the guitar and take in the words. I learned to play and sing this when I was 15, right after its release and it's still my favorite 52 years later. Thank you James Taylor.

I too have been a JT fan since the age of 13 when I used to listen to Sweet Baby James on the neighbors stereo while babysitting the their kids. I know Mudslide Slim came later but "You Can Close Your Eyes" has always stuck with me for the joy and sadness which it portrays. Later in my life, the emotional journey of losing my oldest son to mental illness and only recently clawing back a semblance of a stable, loving relationship with him has forever made this lovely song an anthem of sorts for our shared experience. James himself gave an interview years ago in which indicated that this song was one that "just came to him" like so many others. As such, the meaning is, to the listener, whatever he/she wants it to be. Seeing JT perform this with his own son cements my interpretation. I am eternally indebted to James for sharing this most beautiful of songs with the world, and me.

James has three sons, the youngest being Rufus and Henry (twins), born to their mother Kim. and Ben, Carly Simon's son. Ben is quite the prolific musician, with five albums and one EP, and is very close in tone and timbre to his dad but with the rasp of his mom, Carly Simon. Check out Ben's cover of the Beatles song, "I Will." James' daughter Sally, Ben's older sister, has three studio albums and has done a few duets with her dad where she has appeared on stage and in recordings throughout the years. James' legacy has already been established, many times over. Looking forward to hearing more from Henry.
