Why are some Americans so strongly opposed to gay marriage? Henry Rollins is convinced that not so many people are actually opposed. Instead he sees it as a fundraising tool for small fringe groups.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HENRY ROLLINS:
Henry Rollins is an American singer-songwriter, spoken word artist, writer, comedian, publisher, actor, and radio DJ. After performing for the short-lived Washington D.C.-based band State of Alert in 1980, Rollins fronted the California hardcore punk band Black Flag from August 1981 until mid-1986. Following the band's breakup, Rollins soon established the record label and publishing company 2.13.61 to release his spoken word albums, as well as forming the Rollins Band, which toured with a number of lineups from 1987 until 2003, and during 2006. Since Black Flag, Rollins has embarked on projects covering a variety of media. He has hosted numerous radio shows, such as Harmony in My Head on Indie 103, and television shows such as The Henry Rollins Show, MTV's 120 Minutes, and Jackass. He had a recurring dramatic role in the second season of Sons of Anarchy and has also had roles in several films. Rollins has also campaigned for various political causes in the United States, including promoting LGBT rights, World Hunger Relief, and an end to war in particular, and tours overseas with the United Service Organizations to entertain American troops.

Yours is an old comment now, but you put in one sentence what took me paragraphs. Henry is a seriously underappreciated human. His acting has portrayed some troubling aspects of humanity, but that's because he's just a great actor--and I think too many people have only seen him as an actor. They've not seen him as a musician, and CERTAINLY not as the wonderfully complex and just plain GOOD person at heart that he really is. We should all ascribe to be more like him.

You know what though? Siegfried and Roy owned tigers, and tigers are cats, and one of them mauled the couple. Look, as a gay man I'm in no way against gay marriage, don't get me wrong, however it's my god given right to hate cats! Elisha turned around, looked at them and called down a curse in the name of the lord. Then two bears came out of the woods and mauled 42 of the youths. ===2kings 2:23-24=== When you read that line, when you truly start to understand the lord and his ways, you can no longer love cats for they are abominations, bringers of great droughts, and famine, and some times pee on your linens with the intent of defacing that really sweet, and ironic Bob Ross shirt you found on sell at Value Village. Great, well thought out speech by the ever brilliant Mr Rollins. I’m pretty shocked at some of the hateful, homophobic comments in the comments section though. Surely if you’re a Black Flag fan you’d agree that fighting intolerance and hate is a very positive thing? The story about his bullied classmate is particularly poignant, shocking that people/kids have to put up with abuse for who they are. Many forms of hatred such as racism and homophobia spring from ignorance and fear. Time to RISE ABOVE the hatred people!

formdoggie5 What ive learned after reading the Quran was that ill be judged by god by my actions. Sure there are things that i dont see as 'good' but those books are very old my friend. I personally think that religious books are guidelines. Not rules to live your life in a certain way. There is a pretty cool quote that i would like to share with you; "You don't need religion to have morals. If you cant determine right from wrong, you lack empathy not religion." The stereotypical "religious people" would probably support what you said. But for me, pray for hate? I'll pass... I wish everyone the best of luck, love and happiness in hes/her life. :)

I believe the perception among the people who believe gay marriage should be prohibited is the reverse of your characterization of sticking one's nose in another's private affairs. They believe that the act of seeking to sanction marriage is a political and public act. Aside from certain legal aspects, people lobbying for gay marriage are implicitly asking for legitimacy by asking the government to sanction them. I would argue the government has no such authority. Or that to the degree that it does, marriage is being redefined in terms of the state's permission to marry, which is ultimately an effort to seek recognition, which implies that the collective view of government officials has some moral, solidifying weight to one's desire to be with another human being. Someone poking there nose into another's affair would be telling people what they can and cannot do. Asking the government to say what you are doing is legit is asking the public to endorse your lifestyle. And they are free to do that. I do not so much want to argue the merits or lack of merit of allowing gay marriage, as much as to point out that opposition to a lifestyle is not a insertion into that person's life in any way. Not by itself. The government does not prohibit people from spending their lives with one another. They just don't (well, there are a few exception with a few states) endorse gay marriage. And if the government stopped endorsing straight marriage, I would live in good conscience as to my lifestyle, and I would certainly lobby to reclaim certain legal benefits, but aside from that the governments stamp of approval is itself an instrusion. If some welcome that then they ask for intrusion, and I do not feel sorry for that intrusion. I can sympathize with their feelings of alienation. But in asking the government for approval they are asking everyone to approve, and not everyone does.

***** I don't really take offense in these things, I hope you do not perceive me to be heated or angry. and this is not quite in the same vein of the remark regarding sexuality but more about morals. I find that I do need religion to have morals. I do not lack empathy for sure. I was once an atheist, before that a skeptic (in the decarte sense), and I did empathize with other people but I did not believe there was any right or wrong. I was ignorant concerning philosophy and religion then, but I understood it to be a natural consequence of atheism. that morality was just socio-biological evolution. I myself am unable to believe in morality as an objective fact outside of religion. In fact it was my belief in right and wrong that brought me to religion. I was just unwilling to accept that I was cursed with this phantom sense that was every bit as real to me as any other sense. That only got me as far as theism, but there it is. I would say religion is prerequisite to objective morality, and that there is no moral obligation to honor subjective morality. sure, i feel the desire to be nice to nice people and help others, but there is no moral justification for loyalty to morality. or to say it differently, there is no moral obligation to be moral if morality does not pre-exist myself and my judgements. so i was a nihilist. but now i am not.

In the same way we have to stop and remind ourselves there was a time that people didn't know that the Sun is the centre of our solar system; or that reproduction occurs by gene-mixing and that this dictates our physical makeup. Hell, one day it'll be difficult for most people to imagine a time without the internet. One day people's first automatic thought when learning about homophobia will be, "God, they must have been stupid." And thanks to the internet they will be able to speed-search youtube comments and find all the nonsense that misguided people thought and wrote as irrefutable evidence that, " . . . yup, a lot of them were definitely stupid."

I have grown up with 2 wonderful, beautiful aunts who are a lesbian couple. My mom always taught me, "You love who you love, gender doesn't matter." It was always normal for me to be around gay people and I never took issue with it. It was natural. One thing I have to point out is, being gay is not just about having sex, it's about love, partnership and caring for another human, no matter their gender. If there is an attraction sexually, wonderful. But I think a lot of people only believe it's about the sexual aspect and not the mental, emotional, and pure human attraction.

Just because you disagree, Henry makes sense. That is why I agree with him but I don't agree with what people do.

When I saw the title, I was REALLY worried what Henry was going to say. I feel a weight lifted off my chest after watching the video.

Marriage shouldn't even be a part of the legal system, as it's a religious ceremony. Give everyone civil unions.

Marriage actually started out as a contract between (typically) waring families, or families that wanted to have better trading deals, it had nothing to do with religion.

I am always a bit surprised to hear the term "the gay". It sounds a bit like people are referring to another race as opposed to saying "gay people". He doesn't use it in a bad way at all. I am just observing how this phrase seems to have become common place on American videos. I don't think I have heard it in Australia or videos from other countries.

The only differences between a Christian fundamentalist, and an Islamic fundamentalist are a different book, and a different prophet. Everything else is rather identical. It’s funny seeing the Texas GOP claim opposition to sharia law, while at the same time advocating for the criminalization of homosexuality. Since homosexuality being illegal is the single most distinct and known criteria of sharia law.

Salient points. All of them. The only small thing I disagree with is "your opinion does not matter" with regards to abortion. My opinion is IF you are the father, your opinion SHOULD matter. That it does not disturbs me greatly, and is not in any way equality. Everyone else's opinions (excluding the mother's, of course) can be written off as useless. The woman and man involved in the pregnancy should both have a voice though. I've never understood why that isn't the case.

it's always amazing to me, is that every single time i come back around and land on Henry Rollins, it's like.. "hell yeah, even with stuff that i am ignorant of, or don't necessarily agree with he makes sense." plus i seemingly am a little better and wiser to reality. not necessarily facts, but Reality. H.Rollins is a great resource for the uninitiated.🤘

Henry, I love you. You're among the truly practical. I got married at 18 years old, to my high school sweetheart. Another 18 years went by, and we're still married. He was born male, and I happened to be born female. So, we were "correct" , yes? We've learned a lot about each other in 18 years. Why, if I say I'm queer, do I get applauded? And why, if HE says he's queer, does he get shat upon? And, why do people question the status of our relationship? If WE don't question it, why does anyone else? I could never be this happy with anyone else. Thank you, Henry Rollins, for taking on such difficult topics, with such reason. We need more people like you.
