Royal marriages were not pleasant since they were arranged for political gains and not driven by love. How difficult it must be for a foreign bride in a new country,new religion, new language, new culture and tradition with a troublesome marriage.

Love Henrietta Maria. I almost see some similarities with her and Marie Antoinette: the rocky early marriage, the stranger in a strange land, the love of luxury, but also the fierce devotion to her husband and family. It's like an alternate history of if Marie Antoinette and her son survived the French Revolution. How different that would be!

There are striking similarities between Charles I, Louis XVI and Nicholas II and Henrietta Maria, Marie Antoinette and Alexandra. Charles, Louis and Nicholas were all well meaning, relatively weak men who were good husbands and fathers. Henrietta Maria, Marie Antoinette and Alexandra were not welcomed in their new countries and were the subject of malicious gossip and vicious propaganda and were accused of dominating their husbands and conspiring with their relatives. They all faced adversity with courage and loyally supported their husbands.

I have found this English Queen interesting since I saw the movie "Cromwell". I did not know much about her French history. This explains a lot about her actions during the English Civil war. It also explains a lot of why Charles II of England was so close to the French court.

Well, I've been discussing your idea about generalizing my channel with my friends, and I've decided to try a few videos that are of Royals outside of the Bourbon Dynasty. I'll be doing Charles II, and I think I'm going to do Maria Theresia Of Austria as she was the mother of Marie Antoinette and was an extremely strong woman with an interesting life story. They're still linked to France, but it'll give me an opportunity to test my viewer's interest... If the reception is good I might branch out more. Thank you for suggesting it. I'm not sure if I'm totally in my comfort zone doing it, but I guess I have nothing to loose by trying it. If you have other royals you think would do well on my channel, please let me know.. Always interested in hearing your opinion !

Or the legitimiste branch with the pretender Louis XX. You also mentioned the Medicis, probably Caterine and Marie. I'm absolutely looking forward to it. What about the exiled english and scottish kings who lived at the french court during the times of Louis XIV et Louis XV.?

Mine too. She was an amazing wife & mother... So sad that her husband was beheaded. It truly tore her to pieces... She truly loved him...

I can imagine she experienced the same reception to a foreign court and country as Marie Antoinette did in France.

Henrietta was not a religious fanatic, like Cromwell and some of her fellow Catholic nobles. She was a patron of the Huguenot sculptor Hubert Le Sueur. Her father was a former Protestant who asserted Protestant rights.

Henrietta’s father Henry IV was religiously tolerant. We have to take into account that Henrietta believed she was championing an oppressed minority. She was a patron of Hubert Le Sueur, who was Protestant. Unlike Antoinette and Empress Alexandra, she also didn’t have an example of a famous monarch being executed by his own people after a Revolution/War.

Charles II and Louis XIV looked so much alike. You could tell they were cousins. Heck they looked like brothers...

Cool! I only knew the basics about Henrietta, & it was great to find out more, like her French background. It seems very hypocritical that she was allowed to be openly Catholic when it was illegal for the general population- how could they think people would be ok with that?? That was their whole problem tho- either they had no clue what average people thought, &/or they thought the rules didn't apply to them because Divine Right of Kings. But ofc it was so sad what Henrietta & her family went through...

@@TheKingsofFrance He paid an _incredibly_ high price, & executing a king for _treason_ is as ridiculous & hypocritical as Henrietta being Catholic. It all just seems like a mess- he wasn't great, but Cromwell certainly wasn't either, but the power of the monarchy did need to be dialled back a bit, & no matter what people tried, Charles was _literally_ like, "over my dead body!", so what are you gonna do? Accept his absolute power, or go to war; both of which are crappy choices.

I think the "last blow" to Charles I's reign was the axe - literally, the axe. ;)

actually Charles II (Henrietta Maria`s son)`s last word were not the phrase "Let not poor Nelly starve" he did said this on his death bed but his last words are " "You must pardon me, gentlemen, for being a most unconscionable time a-dying."he died of kidney failure
