Thank you for telling her story. What a life she led. It is sad that she never got to enjoy a family life eventhough she was married twice and had one surviving child. She truly endured the roller-coaster of the politics of her time.

Oh the political games of marriage! I wonder if she had been happy with Frederick. Maybe happier than what her life came to be. And her only daughter was haughty towards her! This made me cry. Poor Eleanor! I'm glad she had good relations with her siblings. Thank you so much for telling about her life! I enjoed the pictures too, as allways ❤️

Her only surviving daughter was also left behind as a baby, and never had any proper contact with her mother. Her life, and the possibility of marriage, were hampered because of her position at court. She lived in a limbo. She was one of the wealthiest women of her time, and her dowry would have left the Portuguese treasury basically bankrupt. This made her both a very coveted bride and a pawn the Portuguese Court could not let go of. In Portugal, we refer to as Sempre Noiva, the Ever Bride. Now bare in mind that this woman was one of culture and no little girl by the time she actually met her mother. She should have been Queen of a European nation, yet her mother's inheritance was what kept her from it. Her mother, who was queen of two countries in her life, and spent several years in Spain while Maria was young. Both the Portuguese and the Spanish courts kept these two apart for decades, and then kept Maria from getting married. Can you really blame Maria for not holding affection for a woman that was only present in her life for the first year of it? She wouldn't even have memories of her mother.

@@pipitameruje it was not Eleanors fault that she had to leave her behind. So why blame her. And the daughter was woman. She should have known better.

Now that you mention it....
Actually King Manuel of Portugal negogiated the marriage between Eleanor and his son and heir, Prince João. It is said that the portuguese king found Eleanor so beautiful that he decided to marry her and later he married his son, Prince João, to Catarina, Eleanor 's younger sister. It is also said that Prince João, future King João III, never forgave his father for what he considered a treason.

Brilliant! She had an interesting life- not exactly easy tho, especially having to leave her baby daughter in Portugal, & it's kinda interesting but sad that so many of her female relatives had really tragic lives; #1 probably being her mother Juana. I didn't know Henry VII was considering a marriage between Eleanor & Henry VIII tho!

I can see from these portraits of the Hapsburgs that the Hapsburg Jaw was already a common problem in the first half of the 16th century. It's hard to imagine that they made it all the way to the end of the 17th century before the Spanish branch died out due to all the inbreeding. Thank you for sharing these details of this woman's life. Quite interesting.

I think it was the occasional 2nd3rd cousin marriage that may have saved them. The early-mid 1500s had two second cousin marriages that gave them juuust enough new blood to survive
