Suomenlinna is a great place to visit. The Finnish Naval Academy is located in the westernmost islands of Suomenlinna. So, there is both Naval past and modern Naval training on the islands. The Paris peace treaty of 1947 banned Finnish navy from having submarines, so most Uboats were scrapped. But the smallest, and most modern one, Vesikko was kept in storage, and later turned into the museum. Restoring and maintenance of the old fortress is done mainly by prisoners of the open (minimum security) prison, that is located on the main island.

Hi Paanikki, Thanks for watching and we hope you enjoyed the episode. Yeah we are so happy that we visited Suomenlinna and would like to go back someday when we have more time to explore more of the island. Interesting facts, I'm glad they managed to keep it as it's very interesting to see the Vesikko. That we didn't know, a good idea and they must be doing a good job as the fortress looks great! Thanks for your comment and the extra information. Sean and Emily seanandemilytravels.com/

Just the wrong time of year to visit. We get full snow during the winters and 25-30+ degree heat periods and green summers. If you want to visit again, I'd recommend early June or late May for the nature, but all summer for activities. Helsinki has a lot to offer all year around. Great effort and safe travels. Posting this at the evening of 28.11.23 in Munkkiniemi, maybe 4km North-West from the city centre and there's a bit of a snowstorm.

Hi, thanks for your advice. Unfortunately this was the only time we could get 4 weeks free to ride up-to the Nordkapp and back. But we were thinking that Helsinki would be great in both summer or winter -but we still had a great time in the rain 😁. Wow it seems the snow comes in hard in the winter in Finland, it started snowing here in Switzerland but only at the higher altitudes. Hope you have a great winter and thanks for your kind words and encouraging comment. Sean and Emily seanandemilytravels.com

Suomenlinna hasn't had an ice road since the 1980s. The sea ice around the fort is no longer considered safe enough. There are plenty of sea ice walking paths in other parts of the city though. When it's cold enough. The ice thickness is regularly tested by the city council. Suomenlinna does, however, have an emergency access vehicle tunnel to the mainland.

Well we had already had a few coffees by that point so as it was a none riding day Tea did the trick to warm us up 😊. Yeah Helsinki is really cool, lots to do and see with interesting history. It’s probably best to go either in the summer or the winter but yeah it must look incredible in the winter -especially when the sea freezes over! To be honest the prices were about the same as most European cities and less expensive than Norway anyway. Hotels were a bit on the pricey side (but we did not book in advance) and also parking was not cheap! You can’t park the bike on the pavement so I had to pay €30 for 2 days parking (although it was the same to park for a week lol) Thanks for watching! 😊 Sean and Emily seanandemilytravels.com

Very nice video serie. I've watched them all. While watching there is one question. How can you put all your stuff on your bike? I saw 3 hardcases, 2 bags. One on each side case and one big tankbag You travel with a tent, cooking stuff, camera stuff, some extra motorclothing. Where do put you're normal clothes? It seems impossible to us. We travel also by bike and have roughly the space as your hardcases but is it's hard enough for us to put our stuff for one week in those cases. And that is NO tent, NO cooking stuff, NO camera stuff and besides rain clothes and/or gloves NO extra motorclothing. Also for two persons

Maybe i've got it mixed up but do you mean Snowdonia in Wales? - we are actually from Wales and you are for sure recommending a great place which we will for sure visit on our next trip so thanks for that. We have visited some Arab countries and always had a great time there. We have been concentrating on visiting countries that we can easily ride the motorcycle to -now we have visited every country in Europe we will start to look further afield. Early this year we visited Lebanon and we loved the culture and especially the food! So in answer to your question yes we do plan to visit more Arab countries in the future, in fact it's great to have a subscriber from Uzbekistan with us as this is an area we really want to go to! It would be possible to take the Ferry form Baku to Turkmenistan (with the motorcycle) then we can explore the region from there -the only thing is we need more time. Here's the videos from when we visited Lebanon which you might be interested in. Thanks for watching and we look forwards to hearing from you again. Sean and Emily. There is no whale being sold in anywhere in Finland. Well, maybe accidentally in tuna fish cans. The Baltic sea has only a small population of porpoises, not being caught. When a bigger whale is lost in North Sea they might wander to Baltic Sea, and it'll become news in the countries. Unfortunately it's somewhat a death trap - there's no food for them and the water is brackish, not truly saline - but fortunately this is a rare happening.

As a Finnish architect, I have to disagree with that. The original competition entry by Saarinen was national romanticism, but it faced so much criticism that Saarinen redesigned it in a more rational style. He never abandoned certain amount of decoration, but the station is no longer national romanticism or even pure art nouveau, even If some sources claim that. It does not quite fall in the category of art deco either. Soon after completing the railway station Saarinen took part in the Chicago Herald Tribune competition which he did not win, but his entry cleared the way to the modern skyscraper. He then moved to the USA where his son Eero designed several iconic buildings and structures, including the Gateway Arch in St. Louis. Rather than looking back to history like national romanticism did, the Helsinki railway station is looking forward to modernism.

@@sampohonkala4195 I still would say it's more art nouveau than art deco. It's not pure in any sense, but if I had to put it in one category I would put it in the Finnish national romantic style of art nouveau. I think it's more like we have agreed it's this, even if it might be something else.
