    The old Finnish explanation for this and other boulders in the middle of the forests was that the earth was once ruled by giants and they, or the devil, had moved the boulders to their places. Thrown them off from a mountain or something. There is a big stone near me called Pirunkivi "Devil's stone".

    Finland was in fact part of Sweden for centuries, and the Savolax "province" where this castle is located was borderland with Russia. Sweden and Russia were always againts each other, and poor Finns got stuck in the middle of it all. But it was like that back then, Finland as such didn't exist yet and there was very little national identity. People were just surviving. Being stuck between East and West has carved our sense of history and identity as well for a long time. Thank you again for the very nice video, Sean and Emily.

    Novgorod was not today's Russia, it was coexisting groups of people. Russia is the empire that started from the Muscovy region extermination all the other peoples and cultures around them so today its looks pretty grey over there. It's a rough picture but they were not the same plague on the people as the Kremlin is. They were even ahead of other nations in the first steps of democracy. My point is that do not mix em with Russians even if they are being enshrouded by the Kremlin's shadow today. Edit: Not that the information about Novgorod was wrong but missed the conquer of Novgorod by Muscovy with 100 years in my assumption, so yes the castle was started 3 years before Muscovy conquered Novgorod so when the fighting happened they were probably called Russians.

I live down south of Sweden in Helsingborg and it is all flat. That too is nice to ride on and happy to have it all in 1-2 days of riding distance😊 Thank for sharing your adventure and i just love your conversations with each other.

    First of all, I really appreciate your respectful and positive tone. You give the impression that you really had a great time visiting Finland. Then on to a different subject, a story about the Olavinlinna castle and the railway bridge (you can see it to the right at 13:03). I remember many years ago when I first visited it myself, I ended up taking the guided tour in english due to timetable issues. On the same tour was an elderly couple from the US and they fitted the stereotype that many europeans have about americans. The guide told about the building phase in the 15th century and that the russians stood on the eastern shore firing at the construction workers and the swedes firing back, either from the island or from the western shore... Well, the american lady asked: "Why didn´t they just use the bridge?", pointing at the railway bridge. After a few akward seconds the guide gathered herself and very politely explained that the railway bridge was not built until 1907...

    As someone living in southern Finland, it amazes even me how few people live in those parts of the country. Fifty years ago, Finland was much more evenly populated, but since then so many people have moved away from the "backwoods". There is so little traffic on some roads that they sometimes tear up the tarmac and turn the roads back to gravel.

    Hi Tomi. Yeah it amazed us too how long we could ride without seeing other vehicles. Yeah that tends to happen when the young people move to the bigger cities but then maybe later think about moving back for some peace and quiet. It's something we really liked as Europe can be very overpopulated at times so being able to be surrounded by nature and have it to ourselves a lot of the time was really special. Maybe I'm wrong but if you go outside the major cities in Scandinavia there aren't that many tourists I think. Everyone or most people going on trips go to the familiar places in Europe and Scandinavia/Baltics often gets left out. The same with European history and such in atleast pop culture from Britain and America. It's always Italy, France so on so forth. I think Scandinavia plus the Baltics are pretty much forgotten. Maybe I'm wrong, just a thought😂 Thank you for the videos!

    Yeah we agree with you there, I think that’s why we liked it so much! -very few tourists in the places we went to. That’s also the beauty of motorcycle travel is that we can go wherever we want with ease. It’s generally thought that Scandinavia is a very expensive place to visit as a tourist which is probably true although other tourist hot spots in Europe are getting more and more expensive. We can honestly say visiting Scandinavia and Finland has been one of our favourite trips! 😊

    Nice. The video began from the city where I was born long time ago. When the building of the St Olaf's castle was started in 1475, they hired 16 master masons from Tallinn, Estonia for to be the supervisors and advisers for the builders. The local peasants got discount on taxes if they took part of the building process and brought stones and wood. In my opinion that is the nicest castle of our country. In the end Sean said that you were a little worried about reindeers jumping on the road. There are no reindeers that south, but moose everywhere and white tailed deers and roe deers in the southernmost parts of the country.

  • @SeanandEmily

    @SeanandEmily

    Thanks for the information, we agree this castle was very special. The way it sits on the rock -it's positioned perfectly. So it was almost a community project, must have been built well to still be standing so strong today. Yeah we didn't see any reindeers again so that makes sense -actually we didn't see any wildlife as we went south but I guess that's because we had to take the fast busy roads as we were running short on time. Hi Mike, thanks very much -glad you enjoyed it. That rock is fantastic -almost hard to believe it's natural, it even has a tree growing on it! There's also a hill next to it where you can see where the glacier has scratched the rock out - a very interesting natural feature that was actually one of our highlights. At the shores of lake Saimaa you could have spotted the Saimaa ringed seal, the rarest seal species in the world. There are only 400 of them left. But in reality you could have spent years there and seen none.

    In general just curious about your experiences with the bike itself. Looks like it has been quite reliable and we all know how comfortable they are with great suspension. Has Emily any regrets about not having the big touring BMW to lean back into? Thanks both of you for such enjoyable scenery and the adventure.

    Hi Guy, nice to hear from you and we are glad to hear you enjoy the videos. Regarding the Bike it's been fantastic and 22,000 km since we picked it up this year we have had zero issues. Emily finds the GS super comfortable, there is a pad on the back box too, Although the big touring bikes such as the K1600 offer maximum comfort in terms of seat - the Suspension of the GS soaks up the big bumps a lot better so when journeying through rough terrain it's actually more comfortable. Also for longer journeys the GS pillion position encourages a more posture friendly position without slouching which again in the long run is good. Anyway everyone is different in what they find comfortable =). Here's a some brief Blogs written about the bikes we have tried. seanandemilytravels.com/motorcycles Sean and Emily

    @@harriholopainen2651 not true. Finland was an integral province of the kingdom just like any other part on the western side of the baltic. People hadn't the care nor the ability to single out random groups or individuals in those archaic and sparsely populated times. Eastern provinces were subject to the same rules and taxes as the western provinces. People from the eastern side participated in high ranking decisionmaking on the western side. Thats why nobody here needs to be grateful to current swedes for anything and vice versa for the swedes. It really was us all as one, no matter how hard that is to believe these days. Don't victimize us for no reason. That just insults the ones who have genuinely been victimized in the world, AND it hurts you too. You may not see it, because righteous anger feels good, but it's just lying to yourself. Things of value the kingdom structure brought: number 1: the whole concept of Finland. There was no Finland before the numerous tribes were united in the kingdom, just like there was no swedes before their tribes/clans united too. The tribe of svea gave name to provinces of sweden. The tribe of finns gave name to provinces of finland. The finns were originally found only in the south west, just like today, which is why it's called Varsinais-Suomi (Finland Proper). To the "north" was totally different tribes. They are still all found there, living by the same rules as other descendants of other ancient tribes or clans. As has been the case. If you're interested, here are some other things that resulted from having the kingdom: 1) Finland's modern laws. Extremely high quality. Their basis is the same as modern swedish laws, because of the same kingdom. In that spirit newer modern laws have been drafted and it all just functions really well, aside ftom the fact there are too many laws currently, however, that's our own doing. 2) Lutheran church. Values underpinning lutheran form of society are based on realism and hard work, and were designed to enable efficient secular rule instead of religious rule as is the case even today in some cultures. 3) the university. 4) the police institution. There are more, but i suspect you're not interested in a lecture and i'm not really a teacher so take care, and I hope you have a brilliant winter day.

    You understand now why the Soviets failed in their effort in the 105 days of the Winter War of 1939-1940? There's no roads, they are narrow, there's the trees, there's the lakes - all the natural obstacles... So how would you move a mechanized division of 18,000 men in that terrain, in snow and freezing winter with few hours of sunlight? You would not.
