One fully works and the other needs some work. Apparently they have the rest of the tank somewhere on site too.

Note the records @6:33 Mireille Mathieus "French Connection" and Julian Lennons "Valotte", both made in Soviet Union by Melodiya. They were politically ok in the east at that time. The black market for western music was of course big, even after everything collapsed. When I was in Latvia in 1992 for a short student exchange one of our our local guides (a heavy metal fan) took us to Birža, a kind of a flea market for western music, actually nothing more than a lot of young people who gathered once a week in a park in northern Riga, buying/selling/exchanging any music they had.

that structure next to cave was not for fishing, it is called "fish way" built steps so salmon can get upstream to breed (so they do not need to jump over the dam)

:) all cool, to see how fish trying to jump obstacles search for "flying fish Kuldiga" also you probably have ended your trip already as it is December:) , but if you plan to revisit and did not go to - Kuldiga is a very nice place to visit in Latvia :)

Functional yet creepy in that bunker, I'd rather die that "live" down there for years. Riga, isn't that a stag do destination for many bits now?

I have been looking forward to this episode and I wasn't disappointed! I liked the room with the old record players and vinyl 45's and 33's laying about, Stars on 45!!! I think they were a Dutch pop group from the early 80's? They did short medleys of popular songs, always good for a boogie 👯The meal at the end looked lush, so much food! 😋

Hi, thanks very much! Really glad you liked it! Yeah the collection of items and technology from the past was fantastic! everything looked like it had come straight out the box. They must have been partying it up down there 😄 -I’m not sure if those records were added fir the museum as my first thought was would they be allowed to have European records during the Soviet Union 🤔 the fashion and travel magazines were great to see as well. We were so hungry when we got to that restaurant and we eat everything 😋

What a nice and special historical episode you showed us. Interesting to see what things were like at that time.

Hi, Glad you liked it. It really is a fascinating place complete with all the objects of the day! Amazing to see the old technology that was built so very well that it does all still function today.

That was an interesting place! I visited something similar in Lithuania last summer, but I don't say more for to avoid spoiling if you have visited the same place and there will be a video :D I'm old enough that I visited the Soviet Union several times before it collapsed. Not the Baltic states under soviet occupation though, but Russia. Then in the early 1990s border crossing from Finland to Russia was like a time machine.

Hi, yeah it was super interesting. What I liked the most was all the technology of the day frozen in time and preserved perfectly. We didn’t go to one in Lithuania (I probably used up my quota of bunkers per tour 😁) Wow, that’s adventurous. Was that a complicated procedure with visas etc? It must have been fascinating crossing into the Soviet Union and seeing everything completely different.

@@SeanandEmily that we visited was the Cold War museum in Plokščiai, Lihtuania. It was built into an old nuclear missile base. There was a lot of similar stuff like in that bunker you visited. In the Soviet time you practically needed an official invitation for to get visa. My case was that I had been in contact with some radio amateurs on that side, so they managed to get me official invitations from the mayors office of their town. I added that always to my visa application and explained that this is cultural exchange between radio clubs in Finland and S.U. Quite a bureaucracy, but it was possible if you knew the right persons :)

@@SeanandEmily I strongly recommend that place. I hadn't even heard about it before my friend who had been there told about it. Just google Cold War Museum Lithuania, and you get the first hits to that exact location.

That stream of water looks like a fish ladder to me. There was a sign showing a fish going up a stairway. Did you see it?

@@SeanandEmily Salmon are the species here that require ways, like fish ladders, to get past the hydroelectric dams here in the PNW. The dams are a big problem for important fish runs. Native peoples livelihoods have been destroyed. But, things are changing. Dams are coming down. A river was freed after one hundred years. A fish run that was thought extinct came alive!! Cheers!!

The bunker is more humane than the Japanese heritage bunkers in my country which are very narrow and short, I don't know how Japanese soldiers used to live in that bunker.

Hi, I never visited the Heritage bunkers when I visited Japan (many years ago). This Bunker was made with luxury in mind for the 3 officials that had commissioned the bunker, it was full of luxury items and was decorated to feel homely. But yeah as you say the corridors are very big and it did feel spacious! We hope you liked the video and are enjoying the playlist. Kind regards Sean and Emily

Okay so this is a theory explained by a guide -and just a theory as to the reason the bunker was located were it is. During soviet times/Cold War the Soviet’s suspected that if a land attack on Moscow was ever to happen it would come from the direction of Latvia as the gulf of Finland was too heavily defended. If the western defences at Liepāja were to fall then the likely place of a landing would have been around Riga as this would give a straight line to Moscow. The bunker is located some 75km from Riga not exactly conveniently located for a quick run for cover. The theory was it was positioned in a location where the destruction of the Riga area could be coordinated from which would make it impossible for any invasion of Latvia to be able to make it across to Moscow. Like I say it’s just a theory that was presented to us, but it would explain its remote location.
