Nice! I'm from Latvia and what I love the most about my country is indeed it''s nature & culture! Some things were already mentioned, like, we've got no natural disasters, which I absolutely love, it''s super safe to live here :D But we do have the 4 seasons which is awesome! We've got lot's of scientists who have discovered/made quite a lot of things. Also, while, sadly, Euro has replaced our money "Lati" which we had before and it was one of the most valuable money in the world, but at least to us Latvians it's super important and we're proud that we have our own language - Latvian! And it's also one of the difficult ones. No ones gonna take that away from us ;D Oh, also - every single person in Latvia speaks at least 2 languages, be it Latvian & Russian (cuz we were part of Soviet Union and lots of Russians are still here) or Latvian & English. Though I'd even say that majority actually speaks 3 languages - Latvian, English & Russian, while quite some even have German or French added to it ;) So, yup, we're quite...multilingual? :D

I was there in February and I have very beautiful memories on that place and when Coronavirus is over we are going to visit Latvia again! Such a beautiful, peaceful country with very friendly and heartwarming people!! I love the facts that there lives only 2 millions people on so big land. In Capital city you feel sometimes like on a village and it feels soo big!! The atmosphere and little russian feeling just amazing place! And most of the people spoke english even old ladies!!

I am an aviation professional , wandered a-lot around Europe, been to and worked several companies but in the end i decided to stay in Riga Latvia. It is my 6th year here now and i just have one word " It inexplicably is a paradise" Amazing culture ( especially the LIGO , Flowers band and vibrant traditional dress) Lovely people , Beautiful smart girls . ( No offence men are cool too :D ) And i would say the air here is clean and pure, you could feel the freshness after a light rain and go for a walk around the city forest skirts. All in all. Yes I agreed with u , I was in Latvia 🇱🇻 I love the country and culture 🙂 but sad thing is most of Latvians don’t like foreigners.

I lived in Latvia for one and a half years. And I absolutely loved it😍😍😍😍 Everything is amazing there. And if anyone going there, I recommend to try Rimi chips (no flavor), Kvass and Rigas balsams😍

Let's not forget the fact that a Latvian person invented Jeans, which is insanely popular now. We were the first country to light a Christmas tree at Christmas. a Latvian person inspired Crocodile Dundee. Our country is also great and famous at Ice Hockey. We almost have a famous Latvian Basketball (Kristaps Porzingis) player that has recently joined Dallas Mavericks after leaving Knicks, and is around 2.20 meters tall. There's most likely more but I'm not smart enough to know this about my own country LMAO. Also you should definitely make a 2nd part of this. Was very interesting to listen to these facts about my own country. Thank you

I've now lived 3 years in Latvia, having moved from Ireland. Some comments: 1. Turning left on Riga's main streets while driving is typically very difficult, due to their unusual junction systems; often you will have to turn right down some side street and perform various moves to loop round to eventually traverse the road you were on. 2. They have the "genius" idea of having pedestrian crossings round corners at traffic lights, so when you get the green light to turn into a street traversing the one you were waiting on, often you'll have to stop again while still in first gear, just to let the pedestrians walk across... this dangerous madness is also seen in other parts of eastern Europe, for example, Warsaw. 3. As with other parts of eastern Europe, drivers on the main carriageways like to drive right up behind you, almost touching you, before overtaking you... I call this "the Latvian Swoop". 4. Many streets in Riga have threadbare or non-existent road markings, which can make for heart attack inducing experiences. 5. The Latvians seem to regard trees / forests as sacred; sight lines at road junctions are often blocked by a tree that anywhere else would have been chopped down in the interests of safety. 6. The people are family centric (which is good!), but there is none of the civic pride or sense of community you would be familiar with in the West, or at least, that's my impression of it. This emphasis on family-before-community is reported by other western expats as a common theme in eastern Europe. 7. The Lats are very touchy about their language, which they protect ferociously with laws and rules, to the extent that the large Russian minority in the country feel persecuted on this issue; many older Russians can't read or speak Latvian, yet have to deal with medicines, for example, with documentation written exclusively in Latvian (or with Lithuanian and Estonian thrown in, but no Russian). That said, since I hate globalism, I fully support Latvia's decision to protect their language, even if I think they've gone too far by trying to eliminate Russian entirely. 8. Winters are bleak beyond belief. It's not the cold that's the issue, but the darkness and the overcast skies (common to all of eastern Europe in winter), compounded by those suffocating trees blocking out light if you have the misfortune of living close to a forest. Many people here suffer from sleep disorders, which is common in northern lands in winter; my advice is buy a light box and take large quantities of Vit D3 and fish oil if you value your sanity while wintering in Latvia. 9. Summers are mostly sunny and pleasant, but if you live near water or forests, the risk of assault from disease-laden mosquitoes is high. Ticks are also a problem and carry Lyme disease, despite some formal denials from the medical professionals here. And the country is infested with moles hellbent on destroying your garden. 10. Healthcare is better and more accessible than in western Europe, although some Lats will tell you it is getting worse all the time and suffers from regulation from the EU. Overall, it's not the worst place in the world to live, but it takes some time to get used to and it's not where I would want to spend the rest of my life. The distance from my homeland (4 day drive one way), the lack of mountains (hiking in mountains is one of my hobbies), the mosquitoes, the darkness of winter... these are the things that make me want to leave. But I know I would always miss it and have a warm heart towards Latvia for the time spent here.

Ok so the thing is that in Latvia the winters NOW are dark and warm and stuff like that becoze of global warming. Before like quite some time ago the winters were so nice. You had snow alot the tempeture was low but it was light becoze the snow was a big amount. About the roads, yes they are really bad, but its just how it is and you have to get used to it. Bout russian language... latvians aren't trying to get russian language out compleatly, but make it not so populated, coze some russian people if i remember coretly were protastating that russian language has to be a maine language just as latvian... and thats not right or good for Latvia... oh and for the mountains... yea Latvia is kinda flat but what can you do? There are alot of other things to also do... Btw i am not trying to be mean or rude, but its true, and im glad you still like Latvia

@@Marta_Z The road situation is not really Latvia's fault... like all of eastern Europe, I think we have to say such things are the result of bad design ideas from 70 years of communism. My own country has milder winters now too. When I was a child, they were much colder than now. That's climate change for sure. I'm not really complaining, though... I'm just making observations and yes, I still love Latvia very much.

But, maybe, it might as well be, because we use other trees similarly, like when we celebrate summer solstice, we bring young birch trees to decorate home entrance. I have lived in Latvia since birth. But only after watching this video I was very surprised when I found out that the Latvian flag was already there at the end of 1200. Now I have been living in Sweden for 23 years, but I have always been proud of the fact that I am Latvian and still have a Latvian passport. Im dissapointed he didnt talm about Latvia in world war 1 and 2...Latvia was attacked by Germany in world war 1 and Germany has 5,000 more people,42 more planes,50 more ricket launchers and 33 more automatic weapons than us. And Germany had Armor and tons of type of weapons while latvia only had a weapon that shoots 1 bullet and you can reload it in like 3 seconds( and we didnt have armor we just had jackets) But Latvia ( my country🇱🇻 ) came out with a victory against the Germans...and i am still very proud of that!

Thank you for making a video about this small country not many know about.

I’m from Latvia my self, and trust me I do like the culture and the history of my country, but it’s the government, such a poor, corrupt country. You have to live here for a bit to understand what I’m talking about. I moved back to Latvia giving it another try. I couldn’t survive. I starved and didn’t have enough money to pay bills and feed my self, yet alone live my life. Even though I have great language skills and other educations. I was still forced back into the country where I live now.

Another fun fact about Latvias flag:the Latvian flag was in use as early as the 13th century. The red colour is sometimes described as symbolizing the readiness of the Latvians to give the blood from their hearts for freedom and their willingness to defend their liberty. An alternative interpretation, according to one legend, is that a Latvian leader was wounded in battle, and the edges of the white sheet in which he was wrapped were stained by his blood. The white stripe may stand for the sheet that wrapped him.

So, whenever you go to Latvia again, i recommend you go to Talsi. Its very beautiful and has a good resturant with 2 mid size supermarkets and a very large supermarket. And if you go to Riga too there is an amazing pick up and go to the table to eat resturant called "Lido" and it has everything from meat, salad and potatoes to sushi. Happy travels👍

And btw Sigulda is great for tourists and summer or winter activitiess. Such as skiing Snowboarding.And theres a special park down hill for off many many entertainments
