HELP! My bike won't change gear! What to do when your bike is stuck in gear or neutral

A short technical guide to what to do when your motorbike gets stuck in a gear or neutral. Try not to panic. Apply this technique and you will quickly be riding off again on your motorbike.
Many new riders comment that the gearbox isn't working, or the motorcycle is broken because it won't change gear once stationary. However the problem is user error, rather than a broken motorcycle! Using this technique we can quickly resolve the issue and get on with our motorbike journeys.
Motorbike gearboxes are designed to select gears at the appropriate speed when travelling along, and they can get in a muddle when the gear lever is applied in quick succession, at the wrong speeds, or when stationary. This can cause the gearbox to get stuck and not want to do anything at all. Watch the video and learn how to quickly get back into the gear you need without stalling or holding back traffic.
Thanks for watching. Please comment, like, subscribe & share.
See you soon,
Leanna

I passed my mod 2 yesterday, first time, with zero minors. I had great instruction but your videos helped me no end. I watched every one over and over before my mod 2 so I could be fully prepared and everything I learnt was massively helped by your videos. So thank you very much. To any one learning, or practicing for mod 1 or Mod 2, please watch Leanne’s videos. So well pitched and great instruction which is easy to implement. I thank you for being an integral part of my success. Even if you weren’t aware!!!!

This is exactly what I wanted to know. This happened to me on my first ever ride on a geared bike a few months ago and I didn't know what to do. I finally got down the gears by rocking the bike forward but it's good to find out how to do it properly.

It's an odd one isn't it? Lots of students have trouble with this so it's just a natural part of the learning curve. Thank you for your comment 😊

Very well explained (as always🙂) I think this is particularly important these days for anyone that has learnt to drive a car, before learning to ride a bike. When learning to drive a car, it's my understanding the instructors encourage you to approach a junction or traffic lights in the gear you were maintaining before the 'junction' and not 'go down' through the gears, as we were taught 'back in the day'. Never really understood that if I'm honest....why would you not want to be in the correct gear for the speed you are travelling, whether you are driving a car, or riding a bike?

Interesting - was having this very conversation with my wife the other day who is just starting out (CBT) for all the reasons you have done this video for.. thanks :) Though she was stationary on centre stand on my RT, muggins here had to keep spinning the rear wheel 🤪

this happened to me when i was on a bike with no gear indicator i was stamping on the lever trying to get it into 1st and it wasn't happening. It was on private land and i was just practicing riding around with my dad who was howling that i was cursing at the bike when it was my fault all along :) Soon figured it out though and had got a few moves under my belt ready. This was on a yamama r6 too so it was a bum tensing time getting used to that.

Great video - due to bumps in the road (The roads are in disrepair and it can be hard to avoid) my bike jumped into Neutral. Which was odd. Is this normal or does something need tightening or adjusting ?

Hello, it can occasionally happen if you haven't selected the gear fully on your last gear change, even if the gear indicator suggests you have (make sure you are positive with your foot movement to select each gear), or if your foot is hovering over or under the gear lever between gear changes and it knocks the lever as you go over the bump. Thanks 😊

This happened to me forty years ago doing the emergency stop during my test, I was locked in third and stalled it when I tried to un-stick it. I failed the test that time because I should have pushed the bike to the side of the road.

Hi, I spent years riding bikes without gear indicators. To be honest, the sound of thr engine tells you whether you're in the correct gear. The only time this doesn't work is when stationary and trying to determine if the bike is actually in 1st or 2nd. If you're trying to solve this particular problem from then video, just keep tapping down on the gear lever between clutch movements until there are none left in the box, then you'll know you're in 1st. You'll be a better rider for not relying on a gear indicator! Feel and listen to the bike 😊. Thanks for your comment.

Hi Leanna, yes i have learnt that from you, 😃 just learning to slow things down in the mind to control the hands so to speak.😂 I like the way you done controlled stop in other gears and then sorted it out for us to see 🤣 I do have a question but not really on this subject as such 🤣 i very rarely get out of the 4000 revs if at all, 🤔so no red lining as they say 🤣 the highest speed i really get up to is 50mph on my lovely cb500f 2023 🙂 i tried researching but still unsure on how high is it ok to go on the gears...? normally at 30mph I'm in 4th gear and at 50mph im in either 5th or 6th gear. i have good ear plugs so don't really know and to be honest not sure how the bike is meant to sound 🤣🤣 So! can you give any advice on this please, and yes i passed my test a year ago last month 🤭but still working things out 🤣🤣 my nights are coming to an end tonight and I'm back on 2 till 10 shift or maybe it will end up as 2 til 2am only time will tell 🤣but i will have some daylight to go and play without feeling so tired 🙃 yes i am well thank you glad your doing ok to

@@kgba17580sorry Kev I missed this. KZread doesn't always notify my if you respond to a comment. Right then, what you're doing is what I do on the CB500F. I personally prefer to keep it in the lower rev range for the speed I'm doing/gear I'm in. Usually, you split your rev gauge into thirds and generally you'd keep the bike in the middle third of the rev range, most of the time. But it will vary from bike to bike, as to what feels comfortable and what the bike can cope with. Thanks again and sorry for the delay!
