    I didn't take out the whole optical tube. Just unscrew the front and back element groups and you don't need to make markings. This only makes it more complicated and you can mess up focusing. Once the lens groups have been removed I put the whole thing in a tub of Naphtha and put on new grease once it was cleaned. I can do this in 15 minutes without running the risk of messing up the focusing.

    The second small ball provides half-stop aperture clicks, if you use one ball you just get full stop clicks. The second ball and its detents are offset by a half in relation to the other side. If focusing fully open, it's actually easier to count full aperture stops when stopping down after focusing, than counting twice as many half-stops, so there is good cause to leave out the second ball!! Many thanks for your guidance here - as always. I'm still searching for a Jupiter 9 (the main type - M42, black, SLR/short barrel ) helicoid re-lube tutorial, I can't find one anywhere, and it seems like a lot of other people are looking also. I have two, a 1975 and 1978, and both are very stiff.

    Excellent tutorial with good instructions! Top notch. At first i thought "hey, it's easy to dis-assemble ye old simple manual lens and re-lube it", but as the video got further and further it's evident one has to approach it with different mindset. No need to NOT to make it easy-going and fun, an experience you'll learn from no matter how it ends up, but it's important to pay attention to every step of the way, and then backwards. But i can already feel the satisfaction of successful operation. By dis-assembling one starts to really appreciate the level of engineering / craft underneath the construct, which are considered cheap and simple lenses nowadays. It's a real art, and when done right lasts the test of time. So with right tools, tips and mindset it's couple hops here and there and done. Well done!

    Thank you for the good tutorial. After many tries I managed to place both ball bearings in the aperture ring. I placed the first as you showed. The second I put into place with some grease and then added a 5 cm strip of plain paper on top of it between the ring and the ball, then when sliding the ring in place, the paper keeps the ball in place, and the paper can then be removed.

    I figured out how to put the two balls in. For the second ball you can use a small strip of scotch tape to hold it down. Once the aperture ring is in place you can then slide the piece of tape out.

    Great video! For the small metal balls, I have a trick/solution that I used with great results. Basically what I did is that I put one ball in with some grease to keep it in place (like you did) BUT for the second I have cut a thin piece/strip (0.5 to 1cm wide x 2 cm long) of a plastic bag and I used that over the other ball pressing the ring over the plastic (and the plastic pressed the ball in). This made it put the ball inside and the ring over it. As the thin plastic strip is lubricated it is rather easy to pull it out while keeping the ring in place.

    Thank you for this video. I found a solution to put back the two balls of the aperture ring. I put the two into place, I press one inside its place with the aperture ring and then, with a very thin sheet of plastic above the second one but under the ring, I press the aperture ring against the second ball and then I extract the plastic sheet. It maintains the second ball into place.

    Hi, great video! Can you tell me what is the ball's diameter @ 4:12 ? Unfortunately, I have dropped and lost mine (single ball on Helios-44-M-4) and now need to find a replacement. The hole in my case is around 1.5~1.6 mm wide (on the lens's side) with the depth of around 1~1.1 mm (it has a spring-like mechanism beneath it). After doing some measurements from your video of the screen, it should be around 1.2~1.4 mm (average value 1.3 mm), but I wish to be sure, so if you have that spare one, can you measure it? Thanks!

    Thanks! I conducted hole measurement on my model and it is ~ 1.5 mm, but I guess the ball must be slightly smaller. Also, I've measured grooves on the ring, and they are 0.5 mm. So, 1.2 - 1.3 mm should be fine.

  • @laszu7137

    @laszu7137

    6 жыл бұрын

    You can. It took me many weeks to think it out. But you can do it. You basically take it all apart. Then attach the ring with DoF scale to the brass part. Add the distance scale aligning infinity symbol with central red line on the DoF scale. Insert the rear silver part Screw in the front threaded part so it is just about peeking out of the brass part. Assemble the rest normally. After you've done this it probably doesn't work. Now you have to try uncscrewing the front threaded part and turning it around until everything fits. You will know it is not correct when the aperture mechanism either doesn't reach the pin when lens is at close focus or it is getting pushed out of the lens when it is moved towards infinity focus. If you try enough combinations of placements of parts you will eventually assemble the lens correctly.
