I love that his sexism doesn't censor her sexuality, or the fact that she is a SEXUAL person. Any other woman would have tried too hard to prove him wrong by acting very non-sexual and insisting in every way possible that she is not just a body....but she didn't resort to that. If she did, she would have been complicit in an all too familiar game set up for many women to lose. She didn't sacrifice her sexuality to prove him wrong, when he was clearly trying to corner her into doing so. He basically tried to shame her. She is sexy and sexual and it's HIS problem if that is all he can see. His loss if he can't comprehend the concurrent existence of her sexuality with her talent and "serious" acting career. What a loser.

Video should be retitled, Mirren plays Parkinson like a puppet. In P1 Parkinson was trying to establish his dominance and following successive failures he escalated with his language, tone and body posture, until Mirren let him think he'd won that's why in P2 he calmed down a little. Mirren was toying with him throughout the interview, it was like watching an adult handle a toddler. I dont know much about Mirren but from this young age she's shown a great deal of intelligence. That comment about men in leather jackets and men in sharp suites completely flew over Parkinson's head, insulted him right to his face and he had no idea what she was talking about, absolutely loved it.

Men who talk with such an umbelievable voulgarity as you do and think they can tell what is class. Men that still think, in 2017, that sexuality in women is something dirty to be ashemed of. But of course, they don't usually feel ashemed about their own sexuality. At the contrary. This i find ironic.

Gawd I can't tell if it's British humor or not but this guy is stone cold and pompous. I have to say though I like that she's proud of her sexuality rather than glossing over it or making it either good or bad. I also agree with her on porn. It's kind of ashame so many people either gloss over it like it's great or it's bad when it's just business and a very exploitive one at that. She handles herself well especially given that this is obviously uncut and to a great extent unscripted.

Mai Zetterling was born in Sweden in 1925, and lived briefly in Australia while still a child. She's known as a director and actor and trained on the Stockholm repertory stage, she began appearing in war-era films starting in her teens. Following her debut in Lasse Maja (1941), she made quite an impact in the terminally dark Ingmar Bergman-written film Torment (1944) [known as Torment in the US and Frenzy in the UK], who went on to direct her in his Music in Darkness (1948) [Music in Darkness]. The international attention she received from her Bergman association led her to England where she debuted in the title role of Frieda (1947), a war drama co-starring David Farrar, Glynis Johns and Flora Robson. Developing modest sex symbol success, she went on to co-star opposite a number of handsome leading men throughout the post-war years in primarily dramatic works, including Dennis Price in The Bad Lord Byron (1949), Dirk Bogarde in Blackmailed (1951), Herbert Lom in The Ringer (1952), Richard Widmark in A Prize of Gold (1955), Tyrone Power in Abandon Ship (1957) (which was a variation on Hitchcock's Lifeboat (1944)), John Gregson in Faces in the Dark (1960), William Sylvester in The Devil Inside (1961), and Stanley Baker in The Man Who Finally Died (1963). Along the way she proved just as adaptable and sexy in smart comedy when she came between husband and wife Peter Sellers and Virginia Maskell in Only Two Can Play (1962). Mai abandoned acting in the mid-1960s and courted some controversy when she successfully began sitting in the director's chair. Divorced from Norwegian actor Tutte Lemkow in the early 1950s, she later wed writer David Hughes in 1958, who collaborated with her on a number of her directing ventures, which seemed ahead of their time. Obviously influenced by Bergman, the dark, sexy drama Loving Couples (1964) [Loving Couples] dealt with homosexual themes and featured nudity; Nattlek (1966) [Night Games] revolved around sexual decadency and repression; and The Girls (1968) [The Girls], which had an all-star Swedish cast including Bibi Andersson and Harriet Andersson, expounded on women's liberation. She divorced her second husband in 1979. She had two children, Louis and Etienne, from her first marriage. Toward the end of her life, Mai made a return to film acting and is best remembered at this late stage for her nurturing and resilient grandmother in the film The Witches (1990) wherein she is forced to tangle with a particularly virulent ringleader Anjelica Huston to save her grandson from her coven of hags. Mai died of cancer in 1994

To me, she sounds quite subversive and subversive people almost always seem difficult or rude to those who don't understand their stance or agree with their views. Personally, I think she makes amazing points about acting iconic roles, Playboy, film nudity, cultural labels and assumptions about the supposed disconnect between talent and female physical beauty. She sounds insightful, strong, forthright and intelligent. She's my heroine.

He didn't comment, in any interactive way (just made a joke) probably didn't listen, definitely didn't learn. Years later he didn't get it when Meg Ryan denounced romanticism in favour of true (aware) love. He accused Meg Ryan of having a bleak outlook instead of conceding that a realistic friendship can develop into a lasting love. He had a chance to learn here, from a young girl, and didn't.

In these videos, it feels as though Parkinson is being the 'voice' of all of the people who are giving her shit and questioning her acting ability. While he is absolutely asking her horrid things, he's also giving her a chance to speak about it and elaborate without undercutting what she's saying. Its bizarre because if you saw this same type of interview now, not only would they ask the actress things like that but also interrupt her to steer the conversation back to sex. He asks a set of pre-planned questions that were more than likely put up to him based on critical response to Mirren. Yes, this interview is sexist, but I don't feel that its sexist in the way that most people think it is. Even in the beginning of the first part, Parkinson talks about what other people think and what other people call her. While she should not have to be asked questions like that, especially in her first interview, I do think this may have helped her, because this interview could have actually shut down her critics as well.

I agree with you. He's playing a role, and Helen's in on the act. She knows what the public says about her, and it's his job to ask questions on their behalf. In the comments for an Oprah interview with Drew and Jade Barrymore, people were saying that Oprah was being rude in asking the questions she was posing, and the commenters also took issue with her tone. I could see that Oprah was simply there as the mouthpiece for the public, knowing what the masses wanted to know. That's what she does. She asks the tough questions, and the interview subjects also know that it's not personal. There's a whole pre-interview process, and I'm sure they discuss these things, beforehand.

I had not seen many interviews with hellen mirren before this, and i came here from the related column of a recent late night talkshow interview with her. While i found her gracious, intelligent, and funny there, she shows much more of those things here, and this was back in 1975 (well before i was born). Seeing her personality and oppinions here just gave me a huge amount of respect for her, and i would think she has only expanded upon her freethought the last 36 years. I'm too a freethinker :)

I find myself disagreeing with nearly all the comments here. Parkinson is no different here than he was with any other of his guests - yes, he flirts a little - but she flirts back - and it is all in fun - whilst Mirren comes over as a rather pompous and affected act-tooooooooorrrrr . She seems fairly normal these days but I'll bet she was insufferable back then.

Lots of comments here speak as if this interview is awkward, complex, and full of subtle devious undertones. I watched it and only saw a straightforward TV interview, conducted by a fellow who showed genuine respect for his guest. The questions were typical, and quite expected, considering her background at that point. Ms. Mirren was very comfortable and natural throughout. She never once displayed any irritation, and didn't give a single answer that was pointy, or snarky. Maybe other people have watched this interviewer before, and have seen him display sexist ideas while speaking to other people, but this is the first time I've seen him, and I didn't see anything like that here. The facts are pretty simple, she had performed in the nude before, and even posed for a porn magazine. Those are items the audience are almost certainly aware of about her, and they expect him to ask her about it. She is a skilled actress, but she is also very attractive and has taken advantage of her looks to get roles. There is nothing new or unusual about that, who would go to a movie with nothing but ugly women starring in it? Everybody knows that us in the audience insist on seeing beautiful people in films. Those beautiful people are paid very well for being attractive. Part of the job of a person with a public life is to agree to be asked rather personal questions on television. If she were unnerved by the questions, she would have been even more uneasy about doing the things that spawned the questions in the first place. She probably would not have done them. It looks like she had been fairly comfortable with doing those things and she answered the questions without hesitation, and gave thoughtful, and charming responses. She expressed that she was not comfortable with being naked on a movie set, but said it would be different if all the crew were naked too. She also described Playboy as being the worst of the porn magazines, which makes me thing that in hindsight, she did regret posing for them. Regardless of that, she has enjoyed a long career, and has maintained a delightful appearance even into her current age. The first thing I'd ever saw her in, she was in her 60's, and I thought she was an attractive woman then. I looked her up and found out she had done many pictures going back a long time, and had been a very attractive woman when she was younger.

But the way she ends up using it to her advantage in this segment is awesome. She doesn't come off angry at all, but puts him on the spot in pretty short order by turning it around and making it about HIS sexuality. And he falls for it because he wants to impress her. She exposes him for the nervous boy he is without even trying.
