Hegel H390 review // Powerful simplicity
Today we take a look at the Hegel 390. We have always been a big fan of Hegel products. In my opinion Hegel is one of the few companies that try to push the boundaries and develop new designs rarely seen today. Can this high power amplifier all-in-one truly compete with some of big pre/power separates?

Interesting a number of you have gone for this combination. I own the H390 and Spendor D7.2 for the last 18 months. The sound is lovely, I just miss that last bit of punch for rock music, everything else sounds superb otherwise.

Great video! How important is the damping factor if you have Magnepan LRS that do not produce much bass?
It would really be interesting to see how the Hegel H390 performs vs the NAD M33 like you said. Another Amplifier that would be interesting to hear a review of you guys would be the Marantz Model 30 and compare it to others like NAD C399, Cambridge EVO 150 and so on. Im looking forward to your next interesting reviews. 😁 Really like your reviews they are compact and very informative and its nice to see that you have so much fun doing this.😃👍🏻

👍👍 that would be a good comparison!
I bought one of these in December. It was a big step up from my Yamaha R-N602. It can stream but it isn't great because those 3rd party apps are clumsy. I haven't gone to Roon yet. I might get a streamer like the Auralic Aries G1 or an Innuos Zen and stream that way. But first I need a better phono stage, that is now my bottleneck.

Your right and why we mentioned about the 3rd party app in the video. If your using airplay it’s ok. Roon is a good option. I still need to try the Innous app, hopefully it’s good.
I had an Hegel H390 and it was "Out of sight!!!" But, once I got my hand on a pair of inefficient Revel Salon 2 speakers, which required even more power so, I had to move up to the Hegel H590, and it totally "Knocked my socks off."
Wondering why many Audiophiles make a big deal out of amps/integrated etc having tight bass when a speakers dampening factor is far more important?

You are right many people don’t think of the speakers DF. When you have both the bass is pretty awesome. I experienced this in a very high end studio in LA and the bass was sensational!
It's nice seeing what the other half can afford! 😉😂 I'll keep "window shopping for blinds" 😉😂 Jim 🏴🙂

DF of 4,000? Wait and see - Thought you meant the speakers. When did amps etc start publishing DF specs.

I have B&W805D3, planning to upgrade the amplifier. I mostly listen to pop music. Which of the following amplifier would be suggested? 1.) Hegel H390 2.) Gryphon Diablo 120 3.) Soulnote A2 3.) Used Classe CP-500/CP-800 Pre Amplifier + CA-2200 Amplifiers Appreciate any opinions
Good call on the logo, it's a bit too prominent. My understanding is that this amp does not have tone controls. I wish it did . . . not sure why (non-Japanese) manufacturers think they aren't necessary
@Hifyed

Your correct no tone controls. Not all but many uk/European companies think it’s sin! Believe me I worked for many manufacturers in the past.

@@Hifyed if someone like Ken Ishiwata believed amps should have tone controls, then I think it's incredibly arrogant and misguided for those companies to think otherwise -- that aside, the H390 strikes me as an endgame amp for sure

I agree with you I would prefer to see tone controls on more products. Working with so many engineers in the past I do understand both sides. That’s a whole topic of discussion 😉. Hopefully you get your endgame amp soon!
great amplifier I pair the amplifier with the audio physics Virgo 25 I have mcintosh ma 252 and mark Levinson 585 before this amplifier beat them all

Thanks for sharing your experience! I have always been a fan of Hegel. One of the few companies truly trying to develop new technologies in amplifier design.
The rega Aethos destroyed the M33 but its completely analog. For sounds its a better comparison

I remember testing a naim supernait 3, the aethos and a h190 together. Just something sophisticated and effortless in the h190 the other two didn't have. Naim was a Sunday driver , just took prim n proper , Rega was like being strapped to the bonnet of a twin carb from the 70's. The Hegel was like "come'ere lemme show you how it's done" Ended up getting the h390 and never regretted blowing the extra £££
Sad news. Apparently these two passed away. They were found in a running vehicle within a closed garage, pants around their ankles & hands on each other's groin. Condolences. 😭
Guys, pronunciation please, it's "damping factor," not, "dampening factor."
Great info here. If I shall give some feedback: The yellow-shirt-person have to stop reading his notes when he talk. Maybe just write down some the key words. Huge difference when he speaks freely compared to the reading.

This Hegel brand very overhyped for what it is….. the h390 rated 250watts but a 80watt naim supernait 3 make in dust. Not even go into details and so on…
