Supplementing his Hillsdale College Online Course on Genesis [watch here before diving into HDYRI: online.hillsdale.edu/landing/...], Professor of English Dr. Justin Jackson will slowly work through Genesis and occasionally detour to discuss related literature, both ancient and modern. After spending good time in Genesis, we’ll move on to other biblical texts or great literature.

There is an alternate reading that I think makes more sense. I don't think Shechem did r*pe Dinah here. The Hebrew says that he took her, laid with her and defiled her. The term used for defilement could mean r*pe but not necessarily. The term is used in the Torah for r*pe but also other forms of shameful behavior. It is also used of consensual s*x in Deuteronomy 22. Later in Genesis 34:7, the folly that was wrought in Israel was the act of lying with Jacob's daughter. So my reading is that this was tryst between between two young lovers and Shechem, who was described as honorable and in love, decided to do right by Dinah by marrying her. This isn't 21st century America but rather the ANE in the Late Middle Bronze age where the deflowering of a virgin before marriage was a deeply shameful act.
