How Do You Read It?

How Do You Read It?

How Do You Read It? is an ongoing Substack lecture series simply exploring and explaining different ways to read the Hebrew Bible and great literature. Supplementing his Hillsdale College Online Course on Genesis, Professor of English Dr. Justin Jackson will slowly work through Genesis and occasionally detour to discuss related literature, both ancient and modern. After spending good time in Genesis, the next topic to tackle is open for suggestion. See below for Substack link and Hillsdale College Online Course on Genesis.

Incredible. I have felt that we as modern English-speaking Christians (American) need to be the most careful in reading God's Word. English is not hyper descriptive compared to the original language, Hebrew. Best advice I think any American Christian could get would be to find an experience Hebrew brother to help us understand things that we as a culture have absolutely zero comprehension of. You see, the chosen Hebrews are there to help us with the Old Testament (God calls these chosen children "the natural olive branch") and we as Christians/Gentiles are here to help them with the salvation and *cleansing* of sin (God calls us the "wild olive branch"). Only the living God has the infinite wisdom to lay such a hopeful plan for humanity, glory to Christ, who took both our cultures shortcomings and used them for His name. Incredible what can truly be discovered and achieved when all of God's family is working together toward the same goal.

Maybe that's the difference between a gift and a payment. There's no effort required in accepting a payment. Accepting a gift can be harder than the offering.

Appreciate the analysis as always, distantly I thot of Matt 5:23-24 and gifts and reconciliation....it's different to be sure, but echoes.

Why wouldn't you just read Revelation 12 and/or 20 where it says satan is 'that old serpent' and from that, take Genesis 3:14-15 as meaning he would from that point forward (for the most part) only be able to tempt and deceive people invisibly? you don't usually see a snake on the ground, right? And if all you ate was dust you would eventually die, right? So then the 'dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life' part most likely is a repetition of the death sentence satan had already received because of his rebellion in the first world age (see Ezekiel 28) with the part about Jesus crushing his head in Genesis 3:15 also being a repetition of his death sentence that will ultimately be carried out in Revelation 20 which, again, is one of the chapters where you can document 'that old serpent' is the angelic being known as satan (who is the antichrist that will appear in Jerusalem at the 6th seal, the 6th trumpet and the 6th vial) and not a literal animal.

i could be very very wrong seeing as this is all relatively knew to me and ive only just discovered Dr Jackson but Im assuming this is because although he does talk about Christianity and his content is for Christians too, he is jewish and coming from a jewish perspective so although he may reference the new testament occasionally he will only take the old testament as solid truth seeing as jews dont believe jesus was the messiah? if anyone knows if this is correct or has a differnet idea then please let me know cuz im interested aboiut this too :) God bless you all

My reading doesn't reflect Rachel's religious beliefs - I figured she's jealous of Leah and mad at Laban, because his trickery is the reason Leah's in Jacob and Rachel's relationship. So she stole his precious gods, and he's not getting them back.

Dr. Jackson, I got here because of your part in Hillsdale College's course "A Proper Understanding of K-12 Education", section 9 "The Importance of Literature". While listening to you I was wondering if you would have any more content available and I was so happy to find your work here on KZread! I love the inherent passion that you have for the subject and all the wisdom and knowledge that you have gathered over years of specialization on it. I would love to hear you talk about the stories and structures of the Bible from a literary perspective with Dr. Peterson. I am sure that would be an awesome and insightful conversation! I know that he has talked with Dr. Arnn in the past, and I believe that a conversation between you two could be a beneficial endeavor for you both, plus I'd love to see your passion and content have exposure to bigger audiences. By the same token, a conversation with Jonathan Pageau could also be an interesting endeavor. Thank you for your work! I've got some videos of yours to watch. I wish you evergrowing success! Best, Isaac

Great points. I believe Adam and Eve at one point would be allowed to eat of the Tree of the knowledge of good and evil. They had no life experiences with evil only good. Life brings us to good and evil and our experiences hopefully teach us the difference, until the time comes in our lives when God reveals to us what is truly good or evil. Then we can make wise or hopefully wise choices in our walk with God. Knowing evil is a method for us to reject evil because it is opposed to godliness and accepting what God deems good and thuss getting closer to God and being more like Him.(Mat 11:27) All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him. (Mat 11:28) Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Mat 11:29) Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. (Mat 11:30) For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

You can be intelligent and your eyes not opened and can't hear! Jesus is not a God who writes comic books! Symbolism is pertaining to the nature of! Anyhow Satan beguiled Eve! Slept with her in other words! He was the tree that they couldn't partake of! Cain was Satan's child and Abel was Adam's! They were twins! Not identical twins! It's proven a woman can have twins by two different people! That's why at age they had to sacrifice to God! It was the same day of course! He accepted Abels and not Cain's! So Cain's nature was revealed and killed his brother! God Said to Satan I will put enmity between your seed and hers! CAIN was the Seed of Satan! KINITES! Went to the land of Nod! Which is modern day Iran! Muslims ! Jesus defeated death! One of Satan's many names! Bruising of the Heal was being nailed to the CROSS ( T ) ! HE'S GOING TO Crush HIS THE HEAD ! WHICH IS AT THE DAY OF THE LORD! WE ARE IN THE 5TH TRUMP NOW! THERE'S 2 BEAST! ONE'S THE GOVERNMENT! SEE WHAT'S GOING ON? THE OTHER IS SATAN! IT'S CLOSE PEOPLE!

Wait a minute, damnit. I've done Dr. Jackson's Genesis course (which is amazing), but this just cuts off mid-thought. The problem of the Nephilim is one of the OT problems that most theologists seem to just ignore. Dr. Jackson... where are we going with this?

  • @proudcheerdad5220

Hey Dr. Jackson. I'm a big fan of your channel. I want to offer a suggestion. Your videos and insights are thought provoking and interesting to listen to. However, some of your videos are too short. Some of them are less than two minutes and they could probably be combined somehow. KZread will likely promote your content more and it will help your pull on the algorithm if you had longer videos. You could just combine them and make them roughly 10-15 minutes each. Also, I would put the verses you discuss in the description. You mention the word Genesis four times which is great but I would add the specific chapter and verses too. There is no good reason for your videos and channel to not blow up here soon because your hard work is showing.

Perhaps the serpent is a representation of one’s own desire. That’s why god says you will walk on your belly. Cursed be you more than the beasts of the field. Humans from that point forward will move horizontally from one form of physical stimulation to another satisfying the belly of the negative serpent, as their consciousness continues to degenerate as they lose their connection to the divine with their desire. Animals do not even behave that way. While later on Moses uses the positive serpent as his servant to free the people of Israel while it’s under his control. Hence the Kundalini.

Maybe the tree and the fruit are not really a tree and fruit. Maybe it's symbolism like revelations? If it's an actual place you would think we could still go to this garden in today's time? The serpent was Satan? We know he's not a literal snake but a beautiful falling angel?

  • @spectate0074

actually no, it was an actually place, then God kicked us out and had an angel protect it. then the flood probably buried it.
