The official drawing of lots took place in the Tata Steel Chess Tournament playing hall in Wijk aan Zee. The results of the drawing of lots are officially approved by the arbitration. Based on the drawing of lots the playing schedule for the 13 rounds has been made.
Already in the first round, there will be some exciting games. World Champion Magnus Carlsen will play against top talent Alireza Firouzja and Harikrisna Pentala will face Maxime Vachier-Lagrave. Defending champion Fabiano Caruana will meet the Dutch Grand Master Jorden van Foreest.
The games will start on the 16th of January at 14:00 (CET). Chess enthusiasts can follow the games via our international live stream.

    I think it's worse than that - it's 20 moves for a possible resign, lmao from that final position there is still not a clear mate-in-N line, it's just a favourable position for white, but not a win per se - stalemate or repetitions could still happen in a human game that starts from that board

    @@5daydreams Well, masters can navigate endgames fairly easily, but they can't get through middle game the way this computer does! So it really is 20 moves to be easily winning

    @@ParshvaDugad I believe he just waited till Magnus is gone out of respect for him. Andrey probably knew it was tough game for Magnus and also he knew one won game doesn't automatically makes him better, so smiling was in bad taste.

    Wow Magnus really fought well after the mistake, this is why I end up losing games I'm supposed to win sometimes, it's like once an oppenent blunders their senses become 10x sharper

    Not really. The reason is difficult is because most times when you capture an opponents piece your pieces lose their coordination and your opponent gets play. Meaning you have to defend their advances for the next maybe 3-7 moves. And as beginners we are especially bad at defending which is why we blunder back almost immediately.

    Most important after a mistake is to relax. Don't let your opponent see that the mistake has got to you. Take a minute to rethink a different stratagy, then move on. If you lose then learn from the mistake. Everyone, even the best GMs make mistakes.

    Magnus Carlsen's last classical loss was against Levon Aronian in Norway Chess. Just before that was the classical loss against Jan Krzysztof Duda in the same Norway Chess tournament.

It must atleast be a little tiring to dominate your sport for half a decade with basically no contention.     I love the mention of Jonas Neubauer in the quote, if anyone follows Tetris he was an absolute legend and he passed away recently. I'm glad to see people outside the Tetris community acknowledging his passing as he was not only the best player to play the game, but a wonderful person as well!

    I was sad to hear about it. He played & analyzed chess on his Twitch channel and many other things besides Tetris; I chatted with him briefly about coffee and Bobby Fisher during a game he was studying & he said he was also a fan of Agadmator.     It's so sad that Jonas Neubauer died. He seemed like such a sportsmanlike friendly giving person. A force to be reckoned with and graceful in victory and defeat. I am rarely sad when hearing of a death of a person but that news was just miserable.

    At 16:00 In that position, Robert Hess stated that Qc8+ wins on the spot because if Carlsen responds Kg7, Qc3+ captures the rook. If Nf8 was the response, d7 and the passed pawn is unstoppable. If Carlsen insists with the attack by Rxb3+, Then Ka2 and the attack is over.. The c2 pawn is nicely defended by the Queen on c8.

    @@josephdestaubin7426 that 2018 WC game 12 where he agreed to a draw in a slightly better position with good positional advantage was the beginning of the end for him. It only meant that his classical game is not head and shoulders anymore with the rest of the competition. The 22-23 year old Magnus would be disappointed. I reckon we'll have him as world champion for about 5 more years before the competition finally catches up to him and he's no longer the overwhelming favorite to win every tournament he plays in. Of course, I wouldn't bet against him as he'll still be a slight favorite against anyone in his good days

    Recently magnus' performance is not that great, no one knows if he is tired of playing continuously if he is underplaying and testing other lines for the world championship, since he might be fighting against the entire world

    I love this game, cuz it's unpredictable, every thing is possible . No one would thought he would beat magnus and the guy calmly acts nervous while he was makes top moves. Hats off
