Heat Wave, Hoses, & Happiness | Green Roof Buried Dome Home

The green roof buried dome home recently experienced a four day heat wave...how did it measure up? Was it as efficient as we expected? Or will adding an air conditioner be in our future?

My suggestion is you consider adding an outdoor shower at your homestead. It would help keep the moisture out of your dome in the summer and you have the privacy to enjoy it.

Looks like the temperature and humidity inside of the dome is very stable. Totally awesome! Your probably going to need one of those insulated hose bib covers for your cold winters. If the bib freezes in the winter, they do make hose bibs that have the handle outside but the actual valve is on the inside. I think they are called frost free hose bib or a sillcock. This will keep the water deep in your insulated wall and allow the water to drain freely from the valve to the outside preventing freeze ups. They are available with the valve at different depths from 2"-12". Or you can do like someone else mentioned with a valve upstairs and drain the lower section of pex to the bib. At this point its probably easier to install a valve upstairs in the floor with an access panel. I hope the elephant ears are doing better after all the rain. Good luck my friends and congratulations again grandma and grandpa.

Congratulations on your new grand❤ baby. The house is maintaining stable temps and humidity. Nice! Will you be piling on some extra dirt? Here in N.S., we had 2 days of high heat and humidity. There will surely be more to come. I still have to get the window a/c put pack in. The house is small, thank God, so I don't really have to run it continuously. It's also wrap the towel around the toilet season. So much condensation drops off that thing. 🙂👍👍🇨🇦

True, but with the house closed up all night it really doesn't increase so much and it's nice to give the motors in them a break sometimes and not waste our battery energy overnight. During the day they just work off the sun or sometimes we can even open the windows and get a breeze instead. During the heat wave we were emptying it once a day and all we would need is for it to fill up while we are sleeping and be woken up by the alarm on the machine telling us to empty it LOL

Looks like the dome performed admirably under harsh conditions. Excellent! A really big storm cell hit at North Creek with over 200 lightning strikes. It was raining so hard, I couldn't drive home from the store. Had to wait it out. It did drop the temperature 15 degrees, though. Sill rainy today, so no flyin' or paddlin' for now...

I'm not surprised on how your home performed during the heat wave. We lived in an underground home a few miles south of Amsterdam, NY, which was completely buried, and had similar results. What I loved most was how quiet it was inside. Like being inside a space capsule or something. This project looked like it should have drawn blood somewhere during it's completion. Lol

I watched several of you videos to get a gud understanding of the benfits of earth bermed homes, my wife and i are interested in doing a similar home though only berming the rear wall onto the roof here in S.C. Are winter are mild but summers are rough to say the least from june to august we can see 90° + and to 100° on a few weeks! It great the see the difference the earth helps regulate the in door temp! Great report? We have had massive rains too. The temps are finally down with the rains but we are still staying about 78 inside but overnight we went down to 73 with the windows open. With 3 days of little to no sun our batteries went down to 67%. We thought about running the generator but the sun came out today so we will monitor things for a bit. We also had forgotten about water on the upstairs patio and back patio so we will likely remedy this before we frame in the upstairs.

Wow, didn't think you guys get much rain there but it is definitely an issue. One piece of advice that we learned here.....we found that painting the floor with dry lock under our flooring really helps a lot. We also went up the concrete walls about a foot with it too. Maybe you all won't need it though because your climate is a lot dryer.

@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid The rains caught us by surprise too. Been an odd year out here. We rarely go over 95 in our location but we had 3 days of 103 and actually got up to 106 on two days. We also had 3 days in a row of heavy monsoon rains in the afternoon and cloudy all day too. Very odd weather for us. I was going to install our stereo/ camera system but that requires us to remove the roof so that is on hold for now with all the rain. all next week we have a 50% chance of rain.

Got that spigot project done just in time for a huge downpour! I wonder whether some of your indoor humidity is due to concrete, which will continue to lose moisture over years. It would be useful to know that so you don't go too far controlling humidity that will not persist.
