I'd say you did very well on this system, especially to be energy independent from National Grid. Once the grid goes down for a long term, those who didn't bother to prepare will come to your house because you did. But, seriously, you have more piece of mind than most of us.👍

I hope you did this like 4 or more years ago since a system that has 7200w solar with inverter and 14.3kwh battery only costs $6753 today. Many similar systems for around the same price.

Unfortunately we purchased our system during covid when everything was so expensive!!! However we did also buy life po4 batteries (very safe and can be inside our home) which significantly added to our cost. No regrets, just tough timing on purchase.

Wow! You guys have your own "solar system"? I hope it's in our Milky Way galaxy. Even Elon Musk can't say that! 😂 Although expensive in general terms, it's really a no-brainer. Especially with the rebate incentives. It will literally pay for itself. Plus, there are no power outages. You can't beat that no matter what "solar system" you live in! 😂

😂there’s definitely a lot of benefits, but we definitely don’t miss those ridiculous Long Island electric bills!

How much did you have to use the generator to charge up the batteries this fall/winter? The cost of the Kohler generator should probably have been included because you could have used the smaller Harbor Freight generator you had as a backup if you were grid connected.

There was a stretch of about 30 cloudy days with absolutely no sun and the generator ran about every two days for about 2-3 hours. We could decrease that if we choose to, but for now we just live our lives like normal 🤷‍♀️😁😊 oh, and the generator cost was in another video but we honestly would have installed it anyway because power goes out for extended time a lot up here! But with the propane tank and all installed it was around 12,000

My presumption is there are times when batteries are full.with solar panels still working. If not used, you loose it. If it was me....I'd be turning on everything I have and let it just run away !

I searched for 2 years before I bought 8KW inverter, 12kw solar, 48kw battery, custom mounts, total 22000 usd or 30000 cad. Had a firmware problem as well swapped the inverter 20 mins, used the gen to charge up the top 45% of charge the old inverter never charged too. Haven't used the generator since or even come close to using it consuming 14.6 kw a day. If December is not working for you another string of vertical mount bi facials, good cloudy black hole sucking power and snow doesn't stick. 2790 array 580watts in clouds mid-day. 48kw battery was 9600usd.

@@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid If you could return the batteries for 3000 less get 48kw of lead carbons , no bms -30 to 60c I would even offer a video call to wire it up

I've watched you building up the solar system and I think you were maybe a little lucky with chosen supplier, but most importantly you did a great job researching the topic and consequently good choices, like LiFePo4 batteries. So you deserve it and I'm glad it's working great for you! 👏👍

Great video! That said, does your whole-house generator kick in if your inverter is out of commission (i.e., needs to be repaired or replaced)? We will be off-grid in the Ozark Mountains, and that's a scenario we want to prepare for. Think we are better off asking those who live an off-grid lifestyle. Any advice is welcome!

The way it’s set up now, no it doesn’t. But, it is in our plans to install a switch so we can do exactly that. Very important 👍

The gas generator should definitely be in the costings. Might be wise to include a second smaller 5kw generator totally independent of the solar system and main generator... to hedge against that bad day when the main power system fails for whatever reason. Call it Murphy's generator which can be manually connected to the house via a big red "Panic" transfer switch that isolates the first generator and solar system and allows you to have instant emergency power to watch the Super Bowl....

Yes, we understand your thoughts, the generator was included in the propane video as it runs in propane and can power our system independently whether we are off grid or not. We are planning to install a switch this year just in case of that exact scenario! And… we have a 6500 watt generator that can run our 240 volt well pump👍maybe we’ll have to do a solar update video though because even with the propane totals including the generator we came in less than what running electric in would have been!
