Bravo sir....if you’d had done this presentation 18 months ago when I started at the job I have now, I wouldn’t have had to hunt down thermostat diagrams and electrical theory to understand it on my terms how these thermostats work. This should cut out the guesswork of most guys who don’t have 30 years into the electrical field as I have and make installs or the wiring needs easier to apply in their situations...

I've been looking at several videos on heat pump thermostat wiring as well as talking to a Honeywell tech who gave me wrong instructions. This video finally gave me the correct wiring setup for my Goodman heat pump and a new Honeywell stat with AUX heat. I had a black wire that the Honeywell tech told me to connect to "E"emergency and white to AUX. I asked about jumping the "E" and AUX and he said no. I got no heat in "E" mode so I removed the black wire and jumped the "E" and AUX and everything works. The black as well as a brown wire are "extra" if needed. This video was the only one that said the black and brown were extra. Great Video!

Best, just best explanation on You tube I’ve ever seen! I've little bit been confused about Aux and Electric terminal on heat pumps. California. Now the wiring combinations is clear to me. BIG thank you, Craig. Interesting, so electric strips helping to achieve set temperature faster. Also, I've met a gas furnace on Aux in Seattle. Coool!

  • @acservicetechchannel

Hey Tapch MC, glad to help and thank you for your support on Patreon.com/acservicetech - Yeah so aux is powered when the thermostat notices that the heat pump cannot keep up on its own or the temp is set up to far compared to the actual temp in the building. The electric strip heating is downstream of the coil so it won't effect the coil's heat rejection and will add to it to get the air hotter, thanks and look at some of the other videos I linked in the 18 thermostat video playlist in the description. There are others that describe the aux too, thanks!

Ok figured out the problem. The PCB had been rigged to bypass a soldering fault in the G connector plus something had gone low causing the fuse to blow. The PCB should have been replaced at initial installation. Shoddy work. New PCB cost hardly anything and all is up working fine thanks to your KZread and Nest (great customer service). I now understand all (well almost all) of the electrical side of my HVAC Thanks again.

I had to watch this twice to get it but I'm not qualified as an a/c guy. After the 2nd time, I realized the function at the thermostat changed the voltage command the respective part or parts to run Air , cold air, reversal to heat, resistance heat, and emergency heat. At least it helps understand also what is not happening when your trying to get heat or cold air. I'm gonna take a class if I get a chance .

This video helped me resolve 5 years of Hell. NO WONDER my AC never ran correctly. The custom home I bought (second owner) has a heat pump with two zones and a zone controller. But only 5 wires pulled to the thermostats. This video makes it clear I need a 6th wire for the reversing valve. I followed the instructions with a makeshift 6th wire and my AC works perfectly. Thanks again for making sense out of this for me.

This is great. Thanks for explaining. I've had multiple HVAC guys out to try to diagnose our heat pump/ electric grid system. Each time, after they left and I paid the bill, the system was worse than before they came. Since no one around here seems to be competent, I had to learn it myself. The last time they came, they hooked the white wire to W in the thermostat rather than to AUX/E. Only the heat pump would run, and we didn't get any backup electric heat. I fixed that issue and now both the heat pump and electric heat work! I still have one issue going on. When the outdoor heat pump turns on, the compressor cycles repeatedly every 15-20 seconds. Also, the large air fan on the heat pump doesn't turn on. It was turning on recently, but between all the guys that have messed with it, it has stopped working. I just wonder if there is anything in the wiring that could be causing this? If I am understanding correctly, the heat pump compressor and fan are both triggered by the same wire? By the way, the first guy who came out checked the refrigerant pressures, looked for leaks, and said everything was fine, but added a little bit of refrigerant. I don't think the refrigerant is low.

Thank you so much. I needed to bypass my cdef board. I think the contactor relay is fried. Bought a cheep Amazon board DOA no lights when connected and CB turned on. FRUSTRATING. You get what you pay for. I normally do Aircraft and Automotive AC. This was exactly what I needed to get my house cooled off while I find the right board. I did wire in my pressure sensors. They work fine, good 410A refrigerant pressures. Just a bad board. Hvac co estimated $1,101.68 to replace the 100 board with less than 20 push on or screw on connections... Give me a break. I said 1/2. No way we will starve. Never mind I will fix it myself!!!! Thanks yo you its working perfectly and safe in cool mode until I can get the board.

I think of it in the opposite way because I live in a cold climate. If the coil on the reversing valve is bad, it will still operate in heating mode which would be more of a necessity but it really depends on the location in which you live as far as what a necessity is, thanks!

Great video. We have a 4 wire into the thermostat that i want to upgrade with a smart (Honeywell T9) thermostat. The new thermostat comes with a conversion module that uses the G wire to bring 24 V to the new thermostat on the existing 4 wire. At the gas furnace, the G wire from the existing installation is connected directly to an HRV unit and not to the G terminal at the furnace. Not sure where to go to install the new thermostat. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Hello. First, awesome video. I finished wiring new heat pump and elec furnacea, everything works A1 thanks to your videos. I only got one question, hope you can help: at the end of swapping old system with a newer one ( bought second hand) i still have a temp sensor left. It was hooked om the indoor coil, but i have no idea were it should be pluged. Both wires are red and i have no indications. Tried to found the answer elsewhere but non succes. So what does this sensor do and where it should be plug ? Thank you.

Great video Craig! I was referencing this the other day installing a hybrid dual fuel system just like the setup in your video. My question is if the heat pump terminal strip has a "D" Defrost terminal which is energized with 24v when the heat pump goes into defrost mode can I run a wire from the heatpump "D" terminal to W2 on the furnace terminal strip so the furnace comes on while the indoor coil is getting cold in Defrost mode? The defrost is controlled by the heat pumps Board or one of its boards.

Confused about the connection between the W terminals on heat pump and air handler, and the E/aux terminals on the thermostat. The W on the heat pump is an output (as you say), but the E/aux on the thermostat is also an output. So those two outputs are connected together, so doesn't that cause an electrical conflict (sort of like a short-circuit) ?

Yeah that's if the installer before you using the standard color codes. I know a building that used blue for O/B and Orange for common and other colors off matched. Sometimes you just have to verify what colors are hooked up to the control boards.

You always need to look at the indoor unit when replacing a thermostat and look at what terminals the old tstat was connnected to. This was more for when you are installing it and running the wires, thanks KCTech!

I am going to be buying a new house. I wanted to possibly get a nest or another smart thermostat in place of the old thermostat. The unit at this home is an older Lennox model from 1995. Its a 2.5 ton unit. I dont know the exact model number, but I will find out soon. It is a heat pump, and also has an emergency heat stage with heating elements. Will these newer smart thermostats work for something like this? Any recommendations or advice on this?

Is 28V too high? Also, is any measured voltage between 24 and 0 on any wires (yellow in my case) indicative of a problem? I am getting 6.7V on the yellow wire at the condenser unit with the thermostat in cooling mode but setpoint above the room temperature (so that cooling is not called on).

Hi question, I'm switching from a Trane thermostat to a Honeywell T2 Non Programmable Thermostat on our Trane split system Heat Pump with Emergency Heat strips (I Think). The Trane has a Blue , Orange, Green, yellow, red, and a white wire coming out of the wall, There is also a cross over W1 (White wire) on the Trane going from W1 to W2/X2 on the Trane thermostat Our . The Honey Well has a place for a O/B wire. Does the Orange wire from the Trane go in the O/B slot on the Honeywell or the Blue wire?, and does the Blue wire from the Trane go in the C slot on the Honeywell?

Thanks. My outside heat pump(Rheem 13PJL30A01) unit won't turn on at AC mode. Traced inside and outside, everything seems fine except the outside contactor coil does not receive the 24V for start from the DFC control board.. On the control board(DFC), inlet wires from the house on lead R and C has 24V, but the out leads (Y and CC) that go out to the contactor coil has no voltage. Can I fix the control board DFC? or have to replace the DFC? Many thanks.

What would happen if the G wasn't hooked up - doesn't the Heat pump see the call for R+Y and know to turn the fan on using the internal furnace board logic? Is it really necessary for the thermostat to call for G in parallel? I was under the impression the G+R call is specifically when you want airflow without heating/cooling.
