Heart-stopping moment when Pentax K70 tumbles off tripod! Is it still Best Budget DSLR in 2023?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

After a heart-stopping moment when my Pentax K70 took a 6-foot tumble off my tripod, I go in-depth and discuss 10 major benefits the Pentax K70 offers that rival many DSLRs recently released. Is the Pentax K70 a camera you want to consider in 2023? Check out the positive and negative features I point out in this video and you be the judge. If you own a Pentax K70, let me know your thoughts and opinions on how this camera fits your shooting style.
For those playing along at home, you might remember Gabrielle and Rob from some of my previous videos. They were married last June 2022, and just welcomed their first-born into the world last week (last week of June 2023). Congrats to two of my favorite people, and best of friends!

Thanks for continuing to give the K-70 some love. Got my K-70 in the fall of 2022 (based, in part, on a couple of your videos) and I am thrilled with it. Picture quality is amazing. As "low end" as it is, it was a stretch for my budget, so when I dropped mine (on grass, thankfully), my heart stopped beating for a minute, until I was sure it was ok. It also rolled off the seat of my golf cart once. You'd think I'd learn. Still going strong. Video is good when on a tripod, and the subject is stationary (e.g. my daughter's flute recital; used an external mic, and it sounded great.) Have since acquired a whole host (20?) of manual and older auto-focus lenses, and hoping to gather the cash for some real modern glass. My main kit is the Sigma 10-20 HSM, the unfairly maligned Pentax 18-135 kit lens, and the Pentax 55-300 HD DA, along with one or two manual lenses (that vary from week to week). Keep up the good work!

that 18-135 is a fine lens! It works great with the camera and gives you all the option you need regardless where you find yourself shooting. A lot of people spend a lot of time comparing glass in lenses, but 90% only post on social media anyway, so perfect lenses aren't really necessary. Plus there is so much advanced sharpening, etc in post that I don't worry too much about 'the best' lenses. I enjoy the cameras ... the lenses are just a the eye.

I got the k50. And my mom as a nice gesture brought my camera bag downstairs as i was headed home. I didnt have the bag closed and one of the lenses fell out. Luckily i had the lense covers on it. No damage whatsoever. Working on getting good enough to take portraits and get some money for it. Also i use manual mode for most of it to include focus as this helps me get better in the end. I got 2 extra batteries as well as a flash and 256gb card for memory. Stole it for 100.00 plus taxes and shipping in a bid war. Love it sofar.

Most of the pentax cameras are quality, regardless of age. The K70 is a little more advanced than the K50 - but nothing that makes you need to run out and upgrade. for $100 you got a helluva deal! Shoot on!

Thanks for this video, I'd love to see more... I've owned the K70 since 2023, and it's the best camera I've ever had. What's missing from the pros: 1.: the option for astrophotography with automatic tracking on a normal tripod and 2.: that Pentax has kept the lens thread unchanged for 50 years, meaning that even the oldest lenses can be used.

After starting photography a couple years ago with a bridge camera I did a lot of research looking at specs and reviews before buying the k70 as my first dslr , I love this camera ! The weather sealing and the articulated screen swung it for me. It perfectly suits my style for lansdcape and nature . The weather resistance at a lower price point than many other brands is a deal breaker for me - living in the UK - we don't really get summer, but the rain gets warmer ! I'm busy collecting a few lenses at the moment , the pentax 55-300mm plm goes great with this camera .

I bought a new K70 only a month ago. For the 24 mpx, for the flipping display and the easy menu that is like the one in my old K30 and last for a price of 550 $ with a lens 18/55 missing in my photographic equipment . I make some videos with an old Panasonic videocamera and use my camera only for the use of a camera: to take photographs. And first impressions are really superlative for the cost that is a quarter of a equivalent mirrorless. And with many features that I have never seen in those cameras like Astrotracer or rare like IBIS. For me Pentax is really misunderstood from a lot of people that don't see the real value of things but only the fascinating sirens of Marketing. Bye from Italy

I am a little reticent to tell this, but, 40 years ago, I was on holiday in the Caribbean and got a stomach bug. When the effects of the bug occurred, I had my ME Super hanging around my neck. Let's just say it was never the same smooth operating camera after that and the addition of high winds, sand and salt sure didn't help. After 20 years the camera repairer said that it was too corroded to fix. I loved that camera. That's why I'm glad the K-70 has weather sealing!

I have been a Pentax user since 1973. Multiple screwmout bodies and SMC-Takumar lenses. In 2006 I went digital. Pentax K110D. In 2008 I got a K200D. In 2014 I got a K50. 2019 I got a K70. Of course I use the K70 most, but I still use the other bodies depending on what I am shooting and just to keep them active. I bought a Pentax flash but seldom use it. I have found the in camera flash works just fine in most situations. I was planning a trip to Portugal for October this year (done) I usually like to carry 2 bodies with different lenses. Up to this point I usually took the K50 and K70. But I decided I want 2 cameras with pretty much the same specs. I was going to get a KF. Then when I started looking at the prices. KF is about the price I paid for my K70 in 2019. But brand new K70s were going for 500 to 600 dollars less. So I decided to just get another K70. My first was black, the new one is silver so I could tell them apart at a glance. I have been extremely pleased with all my Pentax DSLRs. My one major complaint with the K70 is that it will not take AAs like the other bodies. Aside from that, I am more than pleased with the K70. I just wish Ricoh would put a little more marketing into the line. I was recently shooting up at the airport. Someone else there with their camera phone asked me was it a Canon or Nikon. I said Pentax. His reply, "Never heard of it" How sad. Anyway great video. The first one I have seen of your's. I will be watching more. Thank you. PS love the 18-135mm

As an all around camera the K70 is one of the best. Put a small zoom on it and with the weather sealing you're covered no matter where you take it. I guess the take away from none recognition among amateurs ... the less demand means used models are still easy to find at a modest price lol

As a long time "Pentaxian" I owned the camera and was more than happy with it! Fantastic build quality and - as you have shown - sturdy as hell! Amongs other situations it withstand the extremly fine sand in Antelope Canyon/Arizona while most of the high priced Sonys (and a few Canons) completely failed. I switched to the Pentax K 3 Mk. 3 in 2021 but never got this sense of "reliability" again that I had with the K70! Because the K3 Mk. 3 had major issues shortly after the end of the warranty time (same with two of their star-lenses!), I completely lost my trust in Pentax' quality control, so I recently switched to the Nikon full frame Z-system and the Nikon Z6 II as my new camera! This is a hell of a camera(system) and I have really reached a kind of "new dimension" as far as picture quality is concerned.....!

I'd have to say it's not the best in low-light situations, but if you're post-processing (like Lightroom) and have Denoise features, then you can shoot at much higher ISO's than you normally would, and fix it all in post. But in general, not great at traditional low light. As far as 'sharper' images, I'm fine with the factory default. And again, if I did have an issue I'd just do it in post. Enjoy!

the K70 is still that good that Pentax re-released it as KF without any technical changes (except an altered Displaym as the old one is not produced anymore). I added a K1-II as i got a real good offer. There are a few things that aren't so good thats the flimsy Battery bracket, but thats quite easy to repair, the solenoid issue was almost solved in 2021, the "better" Pentax cameras have adifferent aperture operation without solenoid ( you can try to get a white NOS Japan solenoid and replace a stuck solenoid). Unfortunately Sigma and Tamron stopped support for Pentax K-mount, bvut you can get a lot of used lenses. My recommendations 18-135, 55-300 PLM, SMC-FA 50/1.4, Sigma 18-35/1.8, Sigma 10-20/3.5

Thanks for the video. I have the K70 and am more than satisfied with the photographs I have from this camera and the amazing number of high quality lenses I can pair with it. My only frustration is that I have to get up and go to work when I would much rather be out in nature to shoot pictures. More times than not recently I bring the K70 with me because I am driving often and like to stop and take a quick picture, often of horse grazing in a field. It helps to have an apple to get there attention and even persuade them to come right up to me. It is experiences like this that keep me passionate about photography. The clarity, sharpness and overall 'realistic' images you get from the K70 are unmatched in it's price-range, or even well above. I'm always amazed at the quality I get, and when it comes to enlarging or playing with shadows, etc it's above-par. Regarding the studio - yes, I work at a talk radio station that, fortunately for me, is located in downtown Indianapolis, on the circle. It allows me to get out and do a lot of shooting in the city.

Nice to see some Pentax love. I've been using mine for 2 years now, and have very few complaints. I do have a scratch on the sensor, but it doesn't seem at affect image quality. My viewfinder recently shattered, but again, it's not affecting image quality. I like the weight of it and it's well distributed. The IBIS is great, even on a shaky hands day and I've managed to do long exposures of about 4-6 seconds. Mind you, a lot of that is putting myself into a meditative trance, but the camera helps 😂 I can't afford another camera, but even when I can, I'll probably not love it like I love my Penny (yeah, I named my camera).

@@exitar1 Ah I see! It was a stupid move on my part to walk with the camera still attached to the tripod, instead of taking it off and putting it in a bag, etc. So as I was walking, arms pumping, the momentum sent the heavy Pentax flying off the top. Again, stupid on my part and a mistake I won't make again! lol Thanks for clarifying!

My first good camera was apentax sia grandads camera. What has Pentax done to them selves? Ricoh is a photo copier brand. Where is your shame? I worked for Kodak and Agfa, but they never did anything that was like Ashi. Lenses to be of particular quality. You have no confidence! Marketing is the key.

Their management and marketing is the worst, but fortunately before these new execs took over, there was a legacy of excellent quality cameras!

LOL! If you don't use it, you don't miss it! I can take it or leave it - after all we survived years without it!

@@DozierGraphic yeah, that's probably true. Kind of like a backup camera in a car. I also haven't experienced the most modern touch screens on cameras. All of my experiences have been with mushy touch screens that had sub par UIs. Also, I know I am nitpicking but I don't love the fact that I can't see the next menu until I get my thumb out of the way.
