    I very much appreciate this unpacking of the Ashtavakra - there have been a number of things that were somewhat opaque for me until this. Thank you sincerely once again. I do read the Byron interpretation. All your talks are deeply clarifying. Reminds me very much of the Soto Zen practice of Shikantaza or "Just sitting with no thought of gain." I've heard it sometimes described as: 'Just Sitting Is Buddha'. The practice is exactly said to be the "Dropping off of body and mind" ....not meditation but actually sitting in non-dual awareness...objects of awareness may come and go but are not grasped. I have understood the Ashtavakra easier even though I recognize the relatedness. I understand Just Sitting as "Brahman alone is real. The world is an appearance" Some Buddhists naturally will have dualistic fits over this...;)

    This is a question that has exercised my mind all through your lectures ......if the true consciousness is the observer never the experienced.....when the body dies how is good karma and bad karma decided to take us on to the next life.? Who decides or how is it decided ? It cannot be the mind or consciousness?

    Chidabasa or the reflected consciousness is multiple in nature - like a sun reflecting on the water in many pots. From that perspective, even for a Jnani, there are many bodies and minds. The absolute brahman is one only.

    Swamiji should clarify this when teaching perhaps. When at 16” he says the business of life can continue: it makes a seeker think that vedantic wisdom somehow sanctions the “kind” of life being loved! That’s simply untrue. Then vedantic knowldge is academic. And that’s useless. Advaita is for those who “see”, I.e. the very you you take yourself to be has been destroyed that is the ego. So life will change.

    Dear Beloved Swamy, If Brahman only exists, how Arjun could see Krishna in divine farm? Then it becomes duality. Because the seer and seen cannot be different. If I try to answer that, is it that temporary Jeeva gets divine vision and witness the Brahman, to merge into Brahman ?

  • @sankarakrishnan8707

    @sankarakrishnan8707

    Krishna gave the Virat darshan to Arjuna. Virat is the God in the waking state and contains everything in the material universe. Divine darshans are in the realm of duality. Like how Ramakrishna saw Kali all the time. It is a very high state, and very close to the formless state. Brahman is beyond form. Advaita accepts two levels of reality (3 if you include Prathibhasika) - Paramartika and Vyavaharika. The divine darshan is in Vyavaharika.

    Pranam Swamiji I have a question how individual generates dream ? Dreams are spontaneous aren't they?

  • @sankarakrishnan8707

    @sankarakrishnan8707

    The subtle body expresses its samskaras in the waking state and the dream state. The dream is generated just like how the waking state is generated. As per Advaita, the individual makes its own movie appear and gets lost in it.

    Does that mean that pure consciousness and absence of everything (shunyata) are the same thing?

  • @wolwerine777

    @wolwerine777

    No.Consciousness is then wittnessing the absence.

  • @sankarakrishnan8707

    Shunyata is not absence or presence. It is void of attributes or void of objects. When you are completely free of all objects and remain in abidance of true nature (the light of the void as it is called), then you are in Shunyata. It is another expression for Brahman. Shunyata and Poornata are same. Swami has mentioned this in several lectures. Although the Vedantins and Buddhists may debate.

    If we are pure consciousness experiencing this reality in the human form or whatever form you may come as, and if pure consciousness is something that is unchanging and unaffected by this reality which is Maya, then how do you explain when someone is reincarnated into another body and has knowledge of his past life. It seems that pure consciousness has been affected by the memory of the persons past life.

    From the standpoint of Brahman or pure consciousness, it is all an appearance and nobody was ever born or died. By Maya, the jiva thinks it has become embodied and when maya leaves, the jiva knows that there was never something called bondage and it was always Brahman. The person does not become free, you become free of the person.

    My understanding to the paradox of food and the eater and the eating is that the manifestation which is the food, the eater and the eating is not Brahman but the awareness of the same thing is Brahman. Please validate my understanding

    If we follow the fundamental tenet of Advaita vedanta then the eater HAS to be brahman. As the eater is the "Jiva"(human) in this context and Advaita Vedanta states " Brahma satyam jagat mithya, jivo brahmaiva naparah". Which means that at the least the eater(Jiva) is Brahman itself.

    According to me, it is "Brahmam satyam, Jagat nithyam". Jagat is the manifestation of Brahman. Best analogy would be a wooden table (I feel this is better than the rope and snake). Table is the manifestation of wood. We cannot see "wood" except in its manifest form such as a table or a chair or a tree. This does not mean table is an illusion. It is a manifest reality. Both the table and wood are realities. If you ask an Advatin he would say its all just wood. That wood is the truth. But as humans we have to interact with wood as the table and we see the table only. So, as long as we have the human body, the table exists also. We cannot say the table is an illusion (mithyam). It is a manifest reality. Similarly, we cannot say the Universe is an illusion. The Universe is a manifest reality of the Brahman.

    All appearances are in Brahman and there is only one reality called Brahman. So everything is Brahman. Awareness is in the mind. "I am eating" for example. Witness/Turiya is beyond the mind. And Turiya is not in the realm of words. Hence, if you are asking if Turiya is same as Brahman, yes.
