This healthy brain booster soup, as it is aptly named, is our Chinese herbal soup tonic recipe of the day. Despite its names, this Chinese herbal remedy is beneficial to not just your brain well-being, but it also helps in your overall health.
Why? This is because, the brain is arguably the most important organ in your body. All your bodily functions, its movements, coordination, its control of everything that goes on within your body, is controlled by the brain. Therefore, it is right to say that by taking care of the brain, you are also giving care for your body.
I’d say the Chinese are the pioneer in all these delicious herbal remedies. Although the ingredients can be intimidating, it is super easy to make. Depending on what parts of your health you want to remedy, there is always some ingredient for something.
For this healthy recipe of brain boosting Chinese herbal soup, there are a number of herbs that brings different benefits to your body. It looks like there is a whole lot of herbal ingredients but usually your local Chinese medicine hall would know what to pick for you.
Here are the ingredients:
Chinese Herbal Soup Ingredients
- 500gm Pork Spare Ribs
- 1.5 litres water
- Solomon Seal Rhizome (玉竹), good for relieving dry coughs and moistening your throats
- Rhizoma Gastrodiae (天麻), good for the heart and improving blood flow to the coronary artery
- Angelica Roots (白芷), widely used to relieve headaches and sinus infections
- Chinese Yams (山藥), reduces cholesterol and strengthens the immune system
- Radix Codonopsis (紋黨), increases red and white blood counts. Thus, improving anemic conditions, blood sugar levels and stimulates the nervous system
- Walnuts (核桃), tonifies your blood, moisturizes the throat, thereby relieves throat dryness and phlegm
- Porio Cocos (茯苓), strengthens the spleen and calms the heart
- Szechwan Lovage Rhizome (川芎), commonly used for pain relief and promoting blood circulation
- Red dates (紅棗), reduces cholesterol and improves the immune system
- Goji Berries (枸杞), strengthens the immune system, improves eyesight, controls diabetes and lowers cholesterol levels
Putting them together:
1. Blanch pork in boiling water for about 3 to 5 minutes
2. Transfer blanched pork into the soup pot, with 1.5 litres water
3. Then add in all the herbal ingredients, leaving out the goji berries first
4. Let the soup simmer for 1 hour and 30 minutes, taking care to make sure your soup does not dry out, add some water when necessary
5. After the simmering, bring it to a boil and add in the goji berries. Let is cook further for about 5 minutes
6. Give it taste and add salt according to your taste and it is ready to serve!
7. Enjoy!
Note:
When the pork and herbal ingredients have been simmered that long, the flavours would have seeped into the soup. In particular, the pork bones will give the soup its savoriness while the red dates gives the soup its natural sweet flavours. Give it a taste before you add any salt because mine didn’t need any additional. The ingredients were enough to give it all the taste it needs!

I've not been in a Chinese store in London, but I did a simple search in Google and found that there are Chinese Medicine stores there. You might want to find a Chinese herbal store instead of Chinese grocer?
