Healthy Breakfast Cereals And What To Avoid | My Top 7 Picks

"Start your morning with the MOST important meal of the day and eat our delicious, convenient and healthy cereal!" Marketers have tried for decades to ingrain this concept in our heads, and you know what, it's just not true.
Not only is breakfast NOT the most important meal of the day, most cereals are just not good for your body. However, that doesn't mean that there aren't some options that are actually pretty decent.
So, let's cut through the clutter and find you some healthy cereals!

Just plain old oatmeal works for me if I have any type of cereal. If I want some fats, I can always add some nuts and if I want some sweetness to it, I can add some fruit, very versatile.

I never have cereal on its own. Sometimes I add a healthy granola to my plain greek yogurt along with fruit and some spices like Cinnamon and Ginger. Of course, chia seeds and a little almond milk to change the thick texture. I used to get the 365 Chai Spice granola, but I'm not near a Whole Foods anymore. :(

Oatmeal isn't oatmeal. Quick cook oats will spike blood sugar. Steel Cut oats are really great. I prefer to use Organic Sprouted rolled oats that I combine with Navitas Organic CoCoa powder, Ground Cinnamon (it jacks up the cocoa flavor, no sugar yet, and a combination monk fruit/ erythrytol combo I get at costco.

I hardly ever eat cereal at all in the morning. For me, it's usually straight black coffee or hot, unsweetened green tea. I do love a hot bowl of oatmeal better than cereal because of how versatile it can be, but I only reserve my oatmeal a few hours before bed because it relaxes me. It's rich in melatonin.

I recently stayed at a B&B style hotel in Rome (Italy). At breakfast they had a dry cereal that I wish I could identify. It was dark brown squiggly noodle shape about the thickness of spaghetti and an inch or so long. I could tell it was good just by the taste and texture. Unfortunately I don’t speak Italian and wasn’t able to find out the name of it. I’m putting this comment here hoping someone can tell me what this was and if it’s available in the US as the original (not regurgitated by some US manufacturer). Thank you.

Grape-Nuts are sometimes called "grain nuts" and are not related to grapes or nuts. Charles William Post's process for turning wheat, barley, salt, and yeast into crunchy morsels is said to result in the creation of "grape sugars" and provide a nutty texture. And added sugars r no good esp in high amts.

Been eating plain Cheerios every mourning for breakfast for around 50 years. I love them with organic honey and keep me full. I have heard some bad things about pesticides in them lately, should i be concerned? My vitals are like a 20 year old so i guess they help!

  • @HearTheTrumpetsSound

I've been concerned about the pesticides too so I've switched over to Cascadian Farm Organic Purely O's Cereal. If you look at the ingredients label and nutritional facts, they appear to be identical with the cascadian farm version being organic. The other brands & types of organic O's are much more heavily laddened with carbs & sugars. both cherrios and purely O's have 29 carbs - 5 carbs fiber = 19 net carbs in a 1 & 1/2 cup serving. I eat a 1 cup serving so that's 13 carbs and fits well into my low-carb life of 50-100 grams of carbs a day. Others are trying to look this good by reducing the serving sizes on their packaging to only 1 cup or 3/4 cup or even laughably 1/2 cup. I mix my O's with a quarter cup of Special K Zero Keto cinnamon for the sweetness and flavor without adding any carbs or sugar or I'll use 1/4 cup fresh strawberries, apple bits or blueberries instead of the special K zero to change things up.

@@HearTheTrumpetsSound thanks for the info. Just had a consultant with a nutritionist and she said Cheerios are ok, but did not know about the pesticides. She suggested i eliminate the whole milk which i have been drinking my entire life with Almond milk with the Cheerios. She said the rest of my diet was fine but did to not eat so much cheese, which i love. I went on pure Keto about a year ago and lost a ton of weight but my health doctor said not to go on Keto, its dangerous as it has to much animal protein and when he broke it down to me it still comes to calories in and out. Meat and cheese has low calories, thats why Keto works.
