HeadrushMX5 with Overdrive and Distortion Pedal? Better distortions? NUX Fireman!

Headrush MX5 with overdrive and distortion pedals.
NUX Fireman
I go over my thought process and what to watch out for when using an external overdrive or distortion pedal with the Headrush MX5 or any modeling pedal. I am using the NUX Fireman, but this applies to any overdrive or distortion pedal out there.
PS: New thumbnail, same video.

    I have a Gigboard and I had to spend a solid 2 days to figure out how it handles gain and reverb. Two things- 1. Try stacking in ways you wouldn’t think of. Like an boost EQ->Gate-> Fuzz. 2. Be aware of the higher digital reverb frequencies. They can cause this weird harmonic phase glitch. Bonus: I have a Keely Limiter after the Headrush which tames some of those fizzy frequencies.

    Possibly the best way of reducing fizz is to put the Noise Filter at the beginning of the signal chain. This emulates a Rocktron Hush and properly set will filter out the noise and hum in such a subtle way that you won't think it's on until you turn it off.

    Tube screamer into a Boss GT1000 core unit sounds damn good. Trick was to create a dynamic clean patch with a touch of reverb. Use the software amp patch Sag feature and resonance controls to nail that clean patch into tube terrain , once you have a great base patch the overdrive pedals will shine.

    Hey Frankie.. I am a little confused on how to connect. Do I run the OD pedal to the guitar in on the MX5? Can I run some other pedals thru the loop, and even maybe some pedals after MX5 then to Amp? Haven't been able to find what different chain options there are. Thanks ST

    @@flyinghorse5874 hey, run before any multi effects unit. I created a Fender Deluxe Reverb with reverb added or delay, patch on my Boss GT core. I found multi effects units try but can never get the favourite OD pedal you have in your collection so run that first into the chain. If you manage to create a great patch that’s amp like in tone the pedal at the front will sound damn good.

    Hey there... considering buying an MX5 ... I'm basically a beginner.... and have a few kids that all have some interest in music. Started looking into pedals to have more ways to approximate the sound of songs we are trying to learn... To accomplish what I want, we'd need at least a couple gain pedals, reverb, delay,...add a tuner and power and you're probably already beyond the cost of a unit like MX5. An MX5 seems like a great way to experiment and learn... and would give us a wah/volume pedal, tuner, compressor, drives, reverb, delay, chorus, phaser, flanger, who knows what else, and a pretty decent looper .... seems like almost a no brainer... and all with few cables and 1 power cord. Hard to think of a reason why MX5 shouldn't be our first "pedal" purchase, even if we end up collecting other individual pedals later. Do u think an MX5 makes for a good start for us...?

    Absolutely! There are a few other contenders in that price bracket from NUX and Hotone, but the MX5 is hard to beat. I use it in a few bands and we play over 50 songs. Have fun with it!

    I guess it depends on what you are going into. I am running two balanced 1/4" TRS cables to a MOTU M4's line-level input. The line-level output on the MX5 matches the input such that if I clip the output of the MX5, it clips the line-level input of the M4. If I were going from the MX5 into a preamp, I'd back it down so that I wasn't overdriving the input. But where it is they are pretty well matched.

    I am using the nux horse man as a boost with the gain level on cero . Then on the amp , the gain is set to 60 With the lead 800 The ir is the V30 On the input i set the treshold to 30 At that point i mantain the sustain and have real dinamics . The external nux pedal is conected to the external boss noicegate and then to the guitar input . That way you will make anny amp sounding to their best with gain . using the green od with the gain level at 70 , and the volume at 40 you will have a lot more realistic gainier tone

    It would seem to me that the better way to go is to go straight into the MX5, use its built-in gate and noise reduction on the input, have a compressor in the first block, then any effects you want before the distortion, and finally set up an effects send put the external distortion there.

  • @DaveBode

    @DaveBode

    That's a great way to go. I have found that distortion from a pedal like the Fireman is a good deal quite than a similar-sounding amp model in the MX5. Another issue is that the compressors in the MX5 are not nearly as good as an analog compression pedal. The Gray Comp has a very long release such that is essentially always in the release stage of the envelope once the threshold is breached. The Dyn III Compressor is fine with attack times of 5ms or more. Below that, it hard clips and sounds kind of poor. Both built-in compressors do not offer any gain reduction or I/O metering, which makes setting the desired amount of compression a bit of a pain. For this reason, I use the Cali76 Stacked compressor pedal. It is a remarkable pedal for it's super fast attack time, dual-stage compression, and parallel processing capability. Thanks for watching!

    If you are thinking of getting one, I have good news! I am selling mine with all my patches. It’s a great place to start because the stock patches are more or less useless. If you are interested, I’ll send you the listing. And yes, running direct is a great way to go. Lower stage volume makes everything sound better. As long as the PA is loud enough you are good to go. It’s never been a problem for me and all my patches need minimal EQ since I EQ almost all of them on studio monitors.

Also would love to see what you think about routing out to an external combo amp and what the best settings are to use. I have to use the headrush for covers and open jam gigs so it can be hard to find the mixer and ask the sound guy if I can route this thing in, cause maybe they need it for all the microphones.

Some of my best distortions aren't even IR's or downloadable rigs. I have the MX5 as well. Would you sill need to have an amp active in your rig when using an external overdrive? Would be nice to just have a clean fender twin, etc in the rig and use an external drive to go from clean to dirty. This also would eliminate the known delay in any of these modelers when switching from a clean to dirty amp.

  • @DaveBode

    You don't need to have an amp. When I had the MX5 I did not notice any delay switching between 2 amps. You have to have 2 separate amp blocks for gapless switching. If you switch the amp via the preset fuction with a scene, there will be a gap.

The Headrush units have an excellent interface. I did a 40 song gig 2 days ago and building the setlist was super fast. I think the Helix and the Headrush pedalboard came out at about the same time.

    Why not put it in the fx loop then add the fx loop block and set it right after your input for even better control?

  • @DaveBode

    @DaveBode

    Жыл бұрын

    Putting pedals in the effects loop is definitely an option. However, I don't think there is a ton of benefit that outweighs the additional 6.1ms of latency from running in and out of the FX loop. The MX5 already has 6.1ms of latency just from between the input and the output. I have tested it through the FX loop and it doubles to 12.2ms. Does that make a difference to the sound? Maybe. It depends on how many other digital I/O products you are running through. A digital mixer will add 1-2ms of latency as well. Going in and out of another digital pedal, like a reverb or delay may add 1-2ms of latency on top of that. It can possible be a little cleaner to go into the MX5 and use the built-in noise filtering, then go out of the FX send into a comp or overdrive, then back into the MX5 via the FX return. But it adds a significant amount of latency. For comparison, the Helix is 1.79ms going from the input to the output double that with the FX loop. That's not the best in the industry, but it's a heck of a lot better than Headrush!
