    This was a truly terrific video. I’ve just bought an MX5 after twenty years of playing guitar and never used digital modelling. I have studio monitors hooked up to the MX5 but have a suspicion I need something punchier - do you recommend passive or active monitors if that were the case? And any particular brands/models to be on the lookout for?

  • @forthecreator1

    @forthecreator1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Welcome to the wonderful world of modeling! Studio monitors are a good option so if you're getting what you need from those, you don't necessarily need anything else. If you want something punchier for a moderate price: I'm really happy with a pair of Headrush FRFR108. They sound a little boomy on the floor, in corners, against walls (due to half space effect) so if you do get some, make sure you get them off the floor and away from the walls.

  • @Chris_Nouvelli

    @@forthecreator1 Many thanks for your quick reply! I’m certainly keen on the 108s. I’ll keep those on the top of the list in that case. My current monitors are fairly entry level Mackie CR3 which sound really good for listening to music, but I’m not entirely convinced they’re delivering the tone promises of the Headrush. A bit of tinkering on the MX5 is definitely needed before I write them off though! And figuring out where the volume levels need to be on both the monitors and Headrush. Thanks again.

  • @forthecreator1

    @forthecreator1

    2 жыл бұрын

    Unfortunately you can't trust most headphones. I don't use Global EQ. In order for an FRFR to give you the correct bass response, it must be off the floor and away from the walls (you'll notice mine is on a dresser). If you still have too much bass after getting it off the floor etc turn down the bass in the amp model. You can also reduce bass using the LOW CUT in the IR, but I prefer doing it from the amp model.

    D’addario EXL110 (10-46). I used to work as a guitar tech so I do my own setups. Without seeing your guitar…my best guess is that strings are binding in the nut (you might hear pinging sounds as you use the tremolo). Take it to a tech and have them use nut files to slightly widen and smooth out the nut slots. Some people use graphite and/or lip balm in the nut as a lubricant (I haven’t needed to).

  • @KevinIsIn5623

    No pinging unless you really go hard on the bigsby but it's not made for that. I have used graphite on the nut but it didnt seem to help much. I set my own guitars up also and the nut seems to be correct with my strings. I have 11's on mine. I like the idea of the roller nut but I dont want to change from it's original state if possible. I can break out the old chapstick and see what happens!

    I'm pretty sure I do I usually fill the space and I use the under over and back under to help lock the strings in and I have a full to almost full peg usually. Not for sure of the proper name for the winding.... I had a set of smooth jazz wounds on it to see if that would help and it did seem to but I did not like the strings! I think I will drop string size to what you are using and see if that helps. I was told 11's came on the guitar and I believe I read that also. 11's are big on the saddles so it may be binding on the sides of the grooves.

    I did return mine. I tried almost every preset and even spent hours building my own using the built-in cabs/mics. Sorry but it wasn't even close, it sucked badly. The selection of amps was slim and everything hi-gain sounded bad - really bad. The effects were nice and easy to use and the unit had plenty of processing power. But none of that matters when the unit sounds terrible. I had high hopes for this too, since it's Eleven Rack tones.

    @@COTG666 I'm on the verge of returning mine after just a day of frustration trying to get a sound that made me vaguely smile out of it, so totally get what you are saying. 270 presets and about 3 or 4 that were okayish - that was off-putting to start with ugh. Think I might just get a Boss IR-200 as it does all the IR stuff nicely and does not overwhelm you with too much choice (most of which sucks sadly). Again I agree that the effects are great but the basic amp sounds are... are what? Hmmm... fake, processed, ugly?? Just made me want to stop playing which is the opposite of what anyone wants. Just to add - been watching a lot more videos and thinking of just deleting all the presets and treating the MX5 as a blank slate, importing some IRs and giving it a proper chance. It definitely has more features to offer than the IR-200 (which to someone overwhelmed with choice can be off putting but we'll see if I can change my mind with a few more days experimentation) but I'm not sure I actually "want" all those features/choices. Having spent 30+ years playing with a few effects on 100s of recordings, maybe I am just a basic bitch who is happy with the sound I know and am too much of an old salty dog to change my ways with these new fangled things haha 😂

I built 4 rigs so far and packed them with IRs and multiple amp models/effects. I turn stuff on or off with the 'scenes' hardware assignment feature. For each rig I try to build a clean/dirty/crunch scene or dirty/crunch/fire scene around an amp model. I've had good results with the modern dual rectifier model. But yah it took me like two days to build just one decent rig. The one saving grace it has is I can recall the exact same tone everytime.
