I'm just so glad this topic is getting brought up. Many weeks have been spent by me trying to find the right headphones that would be comfortable for me to wear with glasses without giving me headaches. What I've found mainly were the following: - The thicker and softer the earpads are, the better. These would usually mold around the arms of the glasses and would put way less stress on the glasses themselves, thus less stress on a single point on the sides of your head. - The thinner your glasses arms are, and the smaller the ends of your glasses arms are (the part that hooks behind your ears), the better. THIS has been the main turning point for me personally. Ever since I switched glasses to ones that have really thin arms and simple pointed ends, my headphone wearing experience improved significantly. It used to trigger my chronic headaches after wearing them for only a few hours, now I have very little problems with them. Having small glasses arm ends also improved the headphone pad seal for me, since my previous glasses had pretty big hook looking things to hook behind my ears, but these kept interfering and didn't fit well inside the earpads. Above all I do really recommend you to physically try out as many headphones (and glasses) as possible if that's within your realm of possibility. I've actually gone around trying out new glasses frames with my headphones around my neck, so I can quickly try out how they fit with my headphones on haha. Personally I've stuck with the Bose QC35 II. They create a lot of space between my ear and the edges of the earpads and the earpads mold around my glasses arms really well. A wildcard pick that I've actually been using for the past few months are the KOSS KSC-75. Been loving these so much, they don't interact with your glasses at all, sound really nice, and only cost like $20 to boot.

These are actually my top 2 picks as well (qc35 ii and ksc75). As someone who has always worn glasses my whole life, and who has an embarrassingly large headphone collection, I think the biggest factors for comfort in order are clamping force, over ear vs on ear design, and pad quality. The qc35 is balanced very well for my head, but another great pick for comfort would be the Phillips shp6500 (it also sounds better imo if background noise isn’t an issue). The ksc75 is one of the biggest steals in audio. If you don’t mind the unique design, it has absurdly good sound quality for the price, and is extremely comfortable. One more thing to take into account is that “rtings” has a website that provides some useful info on how a set of cans might fit, though I would be skeptical of their holistic scores since they are weighted in an odd way that never seems to really capture the value of a headphone.

I’m used to that skull pressure. I do have really thin frames, so it does help. Plus I use open backs most of the time so that helps too. I don’t even break my seal on my AirPods Max because of how thin the arms are. So maybe that’ll help someone.

With my personal experience, heres my solution on this: 1. buy a decent headphone with a metal headband frame so you can reduce the clamping force by bending it out without breaking. 2. experiment with softer and thicker pads, try different material like velours or fabric aside from leathers (this will change the sound tho)...or 3. just get iems

I've had great success with over the ear headphones. I have used very comfortably the HyperX Cloud II, and since getting a bit further into audio, I'm using the open-back Phillips Fidelio X2HR headphones for very long sessions at a time. They don't clamp as hard and the soft, velvety pads play nice with my acrylic frame glasses.

As other people commented, having thin frames is probably the most helpful. My glasses have thin frames which probably allows me to use my headphones comfortably. Having soft pads would also help, since the pads would mould around your frames instead of pressing them into the side of your head or sandwiching them between your ears and skull. Still loving my 599’s Juan - thanks for bringing them to my attention.

@@raptorhacker599 Headphone pads can’t mould around thicker frames as easily as thinner frames, so the pressure is focused on your thick frames and the frames dig into the side of your head. With thinner frames the pads wrap around your frames and the pressure is put more evenly around your ears. The thin frames dig into the pads rather than your skin.

For myself who is short sighted and wears glasses all day, the Sennheiser PXC 550-II has been an excellent purchase for me. Literally while working wear these on average for up to 8 hours a day, and hardly noticeable, and you are right, once you break them in, you don't even realise you are wearing them, a bit like when you first start wearing glasses...😊

Having started using glasses for the first time in my life about 3 months ago, this became an issue with almost all of my headphone collection. My situation is more dire because I have a fairly sized afro, and always wear my glasses with straps, which poses even more of an issue with the cable getting tangled and sound isolation. I've noticed that thicker, softer pads like on my goldplanar gl2000 or monolith m1060 (both open back headphones) felt the best, but over an extended time (2-3 hours plus) the side pressure pain would always come. Also, my ears tend to equalise to the sound isolation difference, and it's only when I adjust the headphones, that I'll notice if one side has a better seal than the other.

As someone who basically always wears glasses I think the pads are what to look for the most. I feel like the fake leather pads always have been uncomfortable for me. I would get used to it, but it wasn't preferable. I know they're not inexpensive but the Sennheiser hd 6xx have been the most comfortable cans for me while having my glasses on. The velour pads don't get sweaty and the cushion clamping force well. Otherwise I just use iems for most of my listening anyway. Sure it gets annoying when I wrap the ear loop around the hook of my glasses, but it isn't uncomfortable. Lol

Finding closed-backed over-ear glasses friendly headphones is a big challenge. Reducing clampforce and breaking in pads or alternative thicker pads go a long way. Foam/material that allows for more articulated/pinpointed decompression helps too like memory foam or velour/alcantara pads. If you don't mind semi-open/open-backed on-ear that still sound great I would recommend Koss Porta-Pros, Koss KPH-30i (w/Grado pads), or Koss KPH-40. Koss has some of the best price to performance headphones out there. The Koss KPH-40 in particular sound amazing, can easily adjust the clamp, have soft foam, and are so small and light that they don't impede wearing glasses at all. I wear blue light filter glasses all the time since I stare at a computer monitor all day at work. Whenever I get fatigue from the pressure of wearing these glasses with one of my headphones I always reach for a pair of Koss headphones as a replacement to relieve that fatigue. I have almost a dozen mid-high end headphones and I still use at least 1 pair of Koss headphones each day.

Just an update, I picked up some hifiman sundaras to try and they are pretty comfortable as well. Not as comfy as the shp9500, but the sound quality is much better and fuller. I am not sure what it is about the sundaras that are aggravating me. I am only getting the issue on my left side, but it is also after the 2 hour mark. The pads are unreal nice. I am wondering if I will get used to it or that just may be a thing with them. The weight is greater so there is that potential as well. Good luck everyone.

My son had this problem as a glasses user. He was using Sennheiser 58x with glasses with a hard plastic frame and was fine for months...then he replaced his glasses with a nicer pair but it had a thin metal frame and within a couple days he had a gnarly gash from the glasses, it was all scabby and gross. Ended up swapping out the stock headphone pads for a pair of Dekoni hybrid pads and it resolved the issue completely.

My glasses have acrylic frames that's about medium thickness. PortaPros, Philips X2 and hifiman Sundara are headphones that I've never had major comfort issues with. For closed back headphones, I'd say the AKG K371 is reliant on perfect seal in order to get the intended sound signature, with glasses it does lose some bass.

so far after a lot of over ear headphones I have liked the Focal Listen Professional best as they fit well and don't cause discomfort with my glasses even after an hour or more of play. the only issue I'd say is that until you find a comfortable fit for them and they loosen up a bit the glasses may be slightly off of your nose for the first week or two. but otherwise no real issues after a year and a half with them.

Something I know from people who've dealt with it is to buy headphones that mold to your head slowly. Then they wiggle their finger back and forth on the part of the cup where the glasses protrude from the ear. This speeds up the time needed to wear them before they fit.

YES!! I also need earpads that are breathable mesh or something other than faux leather/"protein", that's not friendly with ppl who sweat a lot! I also need great noise cancelling, and am dying to find that concert experience sound that I can't experience LIVE, as I am disabled, car-less & haven't been to a concert in 20+ years- or even a movie theater in almost 10 years! Sadly, my budget as a disabled single girl is $100 tops. I know I was so impressed with the SteelSeries Arctis 1 Wireless, thus got myself a used pair of the coveted Cyberpunk version for $70, but despite it being listed as "New open box", the wireless/BT function was broken, so I could only use them via cable. Even these non-squeaky ear pads were still enough to cause a creaky noise on my cheap glasses, so I usually just listen without my eye aids...

Fitment tips: use frames with thin and close fitting temples, with light clamping pressure temple tips should be as flat and minimal as possible headphone cups should be as large diameter as possible, large enough to have room all around the edges of your ear so you're not crushing the tops of your ears into the temples on your glasses pads should be as deep and soft as possible, ideally memory foam so you have max conformity and even pressure spreading pad fabric should be light and breathable to keep all these things stacked around yours ears from getting sweaty. something low friction like velour will also keep the headphones from grabbing the glasses temples and moving them or grinding them into your head as much. headphones should be low clamping pressure Most comfortable solution seems to me like it would be an AKG style headphone with fat aftermarket velour/memory foam pads.

Headphones that play nice with glasses aren't easy to find. But I'll raise you with glasses plus behind-the-year hearing aids. The cans have to be large enough to avoid rubbing up against the microphones on the hearing aids and allow the hearing aids to do what they need to do: receive sound from the headphones. Having to wear hearing aids is not good (seriously, protect the only hearing you've got). And shopping for over-the-ear headphones that work well with glasses and behind-the-ear hearing aids is pretty hard.

@@FallBunny Ah! Now, that will always be an issue. I've tweaked and adjusted mine almost endlessly. I finally got the earpieces in a shape where they follow the contour of the rear a bit better than the skull. Can sometimes make my ears hurt, but that's the consequence of having a worsening prescription. LOL But(!) in managing that much, that's when I've been able to wear headphones for longer. Still need the big cans, though, lest they press the ears against the earpieces no matter what I do. Of course, at this point, I think we just made the case for in-ear units over much else. LOL!

@cooldude3938 I just purchased these and they are absolutely terrible. Doesn't matter if you have a small head, fat head, long head, short head, glasses or no glasses. They clamp, they're small and they also stay on your head by applying pressure to your ears. I don't know he he reccomended them. Just purchased them from Amazon and had a buddy test them out as well. Just terrible design. I recommend Steelseries arctic for bang for your buck.

I've found that the clamping force is the most meaningful thing to consider and with some headphones you can bend them a bit. For a lot of headphones (even cheaper ones as long as they're primarily an audio brand) you can switch up the pads to something more comfortable. That is out of the question for you average user sadly as pads aren't usually available at your regular electronics store or even an audio focused store. Famous brands like Bose or Apple(/Beats) tend to not have the best audio quality at any price point, but they usually create comfortable products with comfortable audio signature which is easy on the ears and more than fine for your average consumer. They're designed for average consumers and comfort in mind first. Even though I don't personally much care for those products, I do think they have those things going for them. They're very much designed for the masses and they sell for other reasons than just the brand. Ease of use and comfortability. For me personally, as someone who wears glasses, nothing beats IEMs when it comes to comfort, but there are also a lot of IEMs that are very uncomfortable. With IEMs I feel like sound signature that's suitable for you also has a bigger impact than on over/on ear headphones. Great video and good topic btw!

Might be kind of a weird answer, but what about opting for IEMs instead of headphones? I haven't owned an over-ear headphone in a few years ever since I got into IEMs, and they don't really interact with my glasses all that much. Of course, going for IEMs comes with it's own downsides. Not everyone will like having silicone or foam nubs shoved into their ear holes, there's the occlusion effect that comes with it, and finding a really good fit is perhaps even more finicky than with over-ears (cable and tip rolling, different ear shapes and all that), but once you find a set that works for you I think it can be a pretty good alternative to having to deal with glasses and headphone pads, and in general IEMs tend to be a more affordable investment than full-sized headphones.

As a glasses wearer and owner of far too many headphones, I would probably recommend a pair of Koss on-ear headphones, like the KPH30i or KPH40. They sound great, don't cost much, and don't clamp enough to push the top of the ear against the arm of the glasses. An alternative suggestion would probably be something like the AKG K240, which have a very low clamping force and aren't impacted significantly by an imperfect seal against the head.

  • @hektorvondanzig9605

All true about AKG240s. There are two reasons for that: huge pads and double headband which makre headphones rest on top of your head with little pressure between your ears. Pitty there's no version of them with bluetooth and closed construction.
