Heading into Fall on the Homestead

Let's make some food, talk about cast iron, do a fall front porch refresh, and chat about Halloween for Christians.
2 weeks ago I posted a video of cooking and food prep on the weekend. This video was filmed just a couple days later and is sort of a follow-up since I finished some of the food I prepped previously, recipes from the video below!

I tried so hard (5 ALDIs!) to find the bread piece and could t find it. I did, however, got three 12 quart stock pots, a blue 4.5 quart crock for my son and a small 2 quart for my daughter! Yes, EXCELLENT price! I really couldn’t believe it! Thank you for that heads up!!!!!❤

Absolutely! Just like Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians, food sacrificed to idols has no power over us who know better and are filled with the Holy Spirit, we would have to consent to being negatively affected - that’s the power of the Holy Spirit 🙌🏽

  • @sleepinglabradors

Great find on those new pots, Steph! I know they can be very expensive. In Australia some of the fancier, mainstream brands cost easily $600+ & that’s if you find it on an amazing, rare sale. Of course there are other fantastic brands that are half, but that’s still $350-ish. I recently started to get into dutch ovens, I need one of each in all the colours - I’m hooked! It’s still a learning curve for me but slowly getting there. Sometimes butter/oil does burn but I figured out if I turn the flame to low everything is much easier, I was going in too hot & heavy from the start. Next plan is to try the pans, those need a bit of care that I’m slowly working on, food is still sticking to the pan. Surely once I get the balance with the seasoning process it’ll all be fine. I recently got a few different sizes that I’m super excited to do a big cook up, just need some recipe inspiration - off to Pinterest once I finish the video of course 😋

I don’t know if you ever have time to sit and read the comments? If you do great… if u don’t, that’s okay I just wanted to share something special our family does. Maybe some of your other viewers might read the comments and maybe they will find it useful. Back when I first married my my husband, not long after we were married, and started a family, for Christmas one year my mother-in-law, had taken all of her favorite recipes and put them in a book that’s the size of a piece of computer paper and made a simple book of a bunch of her favorite recipes. They took it to Kinko’s and Kinko’s put it together with one of those plastic spiral attachments and that’s how all the pages were attached. It had a front and back page. It had a table of contents, and then it had like sections for appetizers, drinks, desserts, main courses, side dishes, etc. I’ve had this book about 30 years and I can’t tell you how many times it’s been used. The only thing I wish you would’ve done as had the pages laminated each page because I can’t tell you how stand up the pages are from cooking lol. But it has been one of my most precious gifts I’ve ever had. Unfortunately, she passed away not long after that and it has meant the world to all of us kids to have some of her best recipes. I lost my Momma when I was 25 and I did not get any of my Momma’s recipes before she died. Same with my Mamaw. They both died within a year of each other, and I did not get one recipe from either one of them. I was just heartbroken. It still hurts today that I don’t have any of their recipes to share with my kids. I have 9 children and all of them are grown except for my youngest who is 17. I have 8 sons and 1 daughter. Several years back my husband and I were talking and we were trying to come up with our (special)Christmas gift for our kids and their spouses. Only 4 of our children are married out of the nine children. We thought what could we give them that was something special? Each year we try to do one major special gift then we buy a bunch of small stocking stuffers, because with that many children, and we have a bunch of grandchildren it gets really expensive at Christmas. Like we’ve done platinum zoo passes in the past for a few of our kids and their children. That way they have a year that they can go do Christmas lights at the zoo. They can spend the entire year at the zoo and it includes parking and the water park. We live near the Columbus zoo. It’s a place that our kids can make memories with their children and sometimes we go with them. Instead of buying a bunch of toys that will break and go into the garbage eventually. We always try to do that one special gift. I like to do sentimental gifts as well and that year my husband and I talked about it, and I thought the kids no longer have access to their grandmother why not take and make copies of those books and pass them down to each of the kids like the ones that are grown and have moved out and we started that when you know the first couple kids left the house and then each Christmas after that when the next children would move out that next Christmas they would get there book of their grandmothers recipes. My older children obviously got to spend more time with their grandmother and my younger children, because when she passed my youngest at the time was 4 years old. So it was super important for me to pass that down to my kids and as we gave those gifts to our children, our children cried because their grandma meant the world to them. We made sure to tell them that it was their responsibility when our grand children moved out of their houses that they keep the tradition going, and that they have to make a copy and give to their children just like we did. My mother-in-law was an amazing cook like she could throw down some southern cook and let me tell u! She is the one that taught me to cook. My mom was a single mom and so she worked a lot of hours in the factory and so she didn’t have time to teach me that my mother-in-law taught me and I ended up being a great cook, and I never pat myself on the back, but that’s the one thing I can do and so it made me think you know I know how much I missed not getting my mom’s recipes so I thought about putting together a book of my favorite recipes and I cook like you a dash of this a pinch of that I do things by sight for the most part, they’re obviously those recipes that you have to have a written recipe for. so I thought about compiling my recipes things that my children love to eat my one son loves my banana pudding recipe and anytime he has a birthday or something like that. I make him a banana pudding instead of a cake, but when I have my book done, I’ll take it to Kinko’s and I think I’ll have all the sheets laminated and I will make sure each of my kids get a copy of that cookbook with, the understanding that they need to make copies and hand it down. Some of the most precious things I own are my mom’s. China and I have quilts that were handmade by my great great grandmother. They hang on a ladder in my living room they are very precious to me. I slept under those quilts growing up. I have my crate, great great grandfather‘s wardrobe and that belongs to my oldest son. He is the one that’s getting it and they are just buying their first house and once they buy that house that won’t go to him I think it’s very very important that we keep those family traditions going, you were talking about conveniences in your video and it made me think of how much today’s kids have lost the ability to know the old ways. That’s why it’s so important for people like you to post your videos because it helps people retain the old ways and how you were talking about making noodles and how the old grannies made homemade noodles and how perfect their noodles were. I think our children who are in public school need to be taught the old ways we have kids that don’t know how to change the oil we have kids so don’t even know how to sew a button are kids are not being taught the important things. I stood my children on chairs next to me when I was canning and I made them watch. It was not there for most favorite thing to do but I showed them. I said you will probably never ever do this, but mom wants you to know that this is how you do it because you never know when the system is going to break my husband roses eyes and thinks I’m crazy but I can I have a huge garden and I believe in preserving food, and I absolutely love your channel, so I just wanted to share that about sharing our cookbook talked about your recipes, maybe compile them and put them into a small book and give them to your children. That way they always have that, and even your sons when they grow up and Mary share those recipes with your daughter-in-law because believe it or not and I am speaking from a daughter-in-law’s perspective it was amazing and it’s so special and I still use those recipes to today. It was just something I wanted to share.

Your food looked so good Steph ! And the cast iron was so beautiful ! I still prefer the original black tho. I would buy the bread one if I spot one at Aldi tho. Lol Little Ernie is so cute with his bib over alls. My son had a pair when he was little too. When their little shirts get too small for them they can still wear them with the bibs. Which is great. 😊 So I was literally shocked when you said your opinion on Halloween. I personally cannot see how any Christian can say Halloween is ok. I seriously do not mean to be rude here or judgmental but there is so much that goes on in our world that most people are so oblivious to. There is so much evil associated with that holiday. If you dig deep in its origin, you will see it’s based on paganism. Yes kids can be cute all dressed up and it may be seen as innocent. But we know Satan is a deceiver. We are called to flee from all evil. Sometimes things aren’t as we believe. I just didn’t expect your take on it. You know it’s the number one holiday for Wiccans. Which are Satanist. That is a fact. I come from a area that has the largest group in this country. 🤔 You have a platform that potentially can influence many people . Need to be careful. I hope I haven’t ruffled too many feathers here. Ultimately we are given free will. I do enjoy your videos Steph. Take care and God bless. 😊

Hey! Halloween is actually another way to say All Hallows’ Eve or Hallowtide Eve, which is a liturgical holiday and a vigil for All Saints Day (November 1). Any witch or pagan that celebrates Samhain on 10/31 has nothing to do with the liturgical holiday and has no power over Christians 😊

I love butter, but as a nurse using that much butter is bad for your cardio vascular health. Please be careful with how much butter you use because animal fats become plaques in your veins and that is irreversible and leads to heart attacks and many other health issues. Im not saying this to judge you as I too love butter im just saying it ao you can keep that in mind when caring for your beautiful family ❤ God bless

Hey thank you for your kindness!! I worked in cath lab for a few years so I’m pretty familiar with the cv system, did you know that the “clogged pipe” theory has been disproven? It’s actually polyunsaturated fats, rather than saturated fats, that cause damage. If you’d like to check out more info - this article in the BMJ is great! bjsm.bmj.com/content/51/15/1111

@@HopewellHeightsohh wow! I have to look into that for sure. Working in a Cath Lab you would probably know better than me lol I work in oncology. I will do some research on that and see who debunked it because you know sometimes big companies pay labs to make scholarly studies in their favor too. I'm a little bit of a conspiracy theorist too 😅

@@rosea6653 absolutely, there’s always money motivation which is how the clogged pipe theory came to be! Consuming animal fats can be done in nature, without factory processing. So a person could theoretically get all of his fat from his own land (eggs, animal fats, dairy, etc.) BUT polyunsaturated fats like seed oils require extensive processing in a factory, so they’re not accessible in high amounts naturally. This presents a huge opportunity for profit in manufacturing these fats 😳 it’s super interesting looking at the scientific data and the marketing history behind this issue!
