Headache Rack Modifications For My Powerstroke

This video was supposed to be out several months ago, but unfortunately things got put on hold for a while. I made a few mistakes on this headache rack, but overall, I'm pleased with how it tuned out. I misspoke when I said I put two end caps on the center posts when in reality I only put a cap on one side. I wasn't a half inch off LOL!! Even though the rack was below the roof of the cab I'm still able to rest things on top without worry of denting the truck. At the end of the day this headache rack project ended up costing me roughly $40. That's what I call a good deal!

*Fantastic* job Cody!! 😀 I really like the alterations you made. Great job planning the build. I like how you made sure there was room for the lid 🙂👍 That rack will help you more than you would think. Take care 🔩🔧

I appreciate that Zane! There was a whole lot of panning off camera. I must’ve put that headache rack on and off the truck a dozen times🤣! As you saw in the video there’s about a finger width of space between the box and headache rack. That way if I accidentally over extend the tool box lid it wouldn’t damage anything. Take care👍

Thank you! I’m really happy with the headache rack. The hooks I welded on the dog ears have been a huge help. Especially the tool box I use it all the time and has paid for itself👍. Thanks for watching😀

Rack turned out great Cody. Good pre-planning for clearance on the tool box lid. I probably would have forgot that!

Thanks Jason! It took a whole lot of planning off camera, but I’m really pleased I took the time to get it right. I know the 3rd brake light is covered up a little bit, but I don’t think it will be an issue. Take care!

Thanks Adam! I’ve really been impressed with that welder. I have no idea how well it penetrated the 1/4in steel but it’s held up great so far.👍

It truly was a fun project, and I’d didn’t take much to make it suit my needs. Plus it has paid for itself because of how useful it is.

Great project. I like what you did. You could extend the top rail by adding steel tube to the top. Then you would have to cut a gap for your third brake light. So yeah. Forget that comment. Lol. Thanks for new content.

Thanks Mr. Randall! Even though half of the third brake light is covered up I’m hoping it won’t be a problem in the long run. I’m glad you liked the video, hope you had a great Christmas and New Years!👍

Awesome looking rack but next time prep the steel better before u paint and maybe use a self etching primer before the paint

Thank you! It’s a good rack for what I have invested in it. It’s already paid for itself in the times I’ve had to haul long pieces of gear that kept the cab from getting scratched up. I agree, I think the metal could’ve come out a little cleaner.

You want a gap between the materials being weld, or a nice bevel, better penetration and bond, plus your clean up grind will be easier. Next time you're out and about, pick up a can of anti-splatter spray. Nice work on the rack.

That’s really good advice! I’ll have to track down a can of that stuff cause I spent a good amount of time to get rid of weld splatter and still didn’t get it all when it came time to paint.

It's a cheap flux core welder. Nothing is going to look pretty with it. Just remember 'a grinder & paint, makes me the welder I ain't' . Don't worry about it, it all comes with time. It did turn out pretty nice though! I'm looking forward to seeing what you got for a diagnostic tool.

Hahaha “a grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain’t” would make a good t-shirt🤣! You’re absolutely right Wesley, things will get better with time and experience, but for a $100 welder it continues to impress me every time I use it.

Thanks man! I’m really happy with how it turned out. I bought a 10ft long ladder/lumber rack the other day to use for a project, and I wouldn’t have been able to bring it home if it wasn’t for the headache rack, so it’s already paid for itself🤣!

  • @ydocproductions5593

I actually got this headache rack at the junk yard for I think only $25 bucks. The rest of the materials (spray paint, scrap metal, and d-rings) cost about another $25 dollars. So I’d say roughly $50 all together.
