HEAD GRAVITY MP v. TOUR v. PRO | Tennis Racket Review

Спорт

The Head Gravity was a new line of racquets created by Head, released in 2019, endorsed by Alexander Zverev. Zverev a user of the original IG Speed has reportedly switched to the Gravity Pro, as have Ash Barty & Andrey Rublev. The 3 main models are the MP, Tour & Pro, varying at different entry levels of weights.

The first GP I bought felt great. So I bought a second and noticed that it felt sluggish compared to the other. I took it to my pro shop and they measured the swingweights of both frames. The original was 331. The new one was 352! Head ended up replacing it with one that was much closer to the listed spec.

Yeah that's the big problem, i like any of them between 330-335, can still handle just a bit higher but i will tire out faster, but when the new one comes out, which i'm sure will just be the same frame, i'll get it measured it and look for one around the low 330s mark

I'm just getting back into tennis and have been demoing a bunch of racquets. I have found the Head Gravity line to be my favorite. I'm deciding between the Tour/Pro but leaning more towards the Gravity Tour and was just wondering what strings you've enjoyed hitting in it. Also can you touch on weighting the handle as mentioned and any tips. Just need to find a place to buy the proper SW because I've also read about the QC. Thanks for putting out this video.

Thanks mate! Weighing the handle can be down by opening the trapdoor at the buttcap, stuffing some cotton balls in, and adding some tungsten putty or bluetac, if you get a proper spec'd Tour, maybe 10g in the handle will do Or you can take off the replacement grip and just line up some lead along and around the bottom of the handle I think a good soft to medium-soft poly, that's shaped or twisted will does well - anything from: Solinco Tour Bite 1.20mm Solinco Hyper G 1.20-1.25mm Head Lynx Tour 1.25mm Volkl V-Square 1.20-1.25mm Volkl Cyclone / Tour 1.20mm Not sure if it's your preference, but i use super thin poly for my 18x20s, mainly: Solinco Tour Bite 1.15mm MSV Focus Hex Soft 1.15mm Dunlop Black Widow 1.18mm Just a precaution, that these thin polys will reduce weight from the head of the racquet, and reduce the swingweight by a few points Tension i believe anywhere between 42-52lbs works the best, if you have any wrist / elbow issues, 42-48lbs Hope that helps!

Terrific review there, mate. I own a pair of Tours; incredibly soft, forgiving and a massive sweet spot. I demoed the Pro as well extensively but couldn’t maintain my racquet speed over 2 hours due to fatigue setting in. I still struggle with the low launch angle (18x20), so the Tour is still not my go-to racquet of choice currently... Also, I can relate to your frustration/angst in terms of deviation from published specifications (swingweight, balance etc). FYI, what i usually do is buy a *matched* pair (static weight, swing weight, balance) when I buy from either TO or Prelli’s - this requires the retailer to order in some 10-12 frames and choose a matched pair amongst them for me (and send the rest back to the distributor). This is the approach not only for Head, but also for other brands such as Wilson (one of the worst QC offenders), Babolat, Prince and several others. From a QC standpoint, Yonex is a standout and Tecnifibre is not far behind (in terms of conformance to published specs). Just my $0.02...

  • @ACTennis

Unless i find something much cheaper on gumtree or ebay i'll buy from TO for all new releases, and they're incredibly nice, i request a 'on-spec' or lower spec if it the frame is a high static weight for the only one i buy, i've never really bought 2 of the same frames before, just because i'd rather use that extra cash on something different and they will go through their current stock for me The gravity's do have a little bit of a lower launch, but since i started using gravity's i also started using 18g (1.15mm) polys and they work perfect, so i basically use 1.10-1.15mm in all my 18x20 frames now

@@ACTennis 18g string is a great tip; I need to try this. Does comfort get compromised if you use an ultra-thin string, though? I'm a much older club-level player than you are and my body tends to break down fairly quickly; so self-preservation is a priority for me to enhance the longevity recreational career... :-) Also, I buy racquets in pairs only to protect me against the eventuality of string breaking during competition (which has rarely happened, if ever), so this admittedly is not a smart use of my money given how much of a racquet wh0re I am...

Im a 3.0 - 3.5 player (i guess more 3.5 than 3.0) (playing for 2,5 years, once a week just with a friend - no competitive yet). 33year old male. I like to hit big from the baseline more, than rushing through the net. I’m trying to play with spin but I’m not the best spin player of my technique. So if I try to hit winners, I often shoot em too flat and they are going too long - out. I’m actually playing the 2023 head extreme mp, because I thought „if I’m not good enough to generate spin with a good technique, maybe the extreme mp can help me with it. But now I’m thinking, maybe I need a more control friendly racket. I’m thinking of the speed or the gravity line. But I don’t know which is better for me and which model i should take (MP, Tour, Pro of gravity or speed) What do you suggest me to get?

The control aspect i still have the same opinion between MP Tour and Pro, but if you come from the Pure Aero, maybe the gravity MP will be more controlled than it, but the spin will be more something you are used to, it also provides alot more room to customize if you need to, where as the Tour, if you dont like head heavy racquets, you cant really make it any headlight because the swingweight and balance tend to be very high and not user friendly

I've been using the Gravity MP for 2 years now after stepping up from an ultralight Dunlop Biomimetic I had played for quite a while after resuming this great sort following a pause of some 20 years... What can I report? I love the Head Gravity MP for a number of reasons. First, it is very comfortable for your wrist, elbow and shoulder. It provides enough power for hefty serves and deep baseline shots. After getting familiar with the racket's sweetspot, it is no trouble using it for extreme angles or dropshots. As a matter of fact, the wider sweetspot provides you as a recreational player with a lot of forgiveness, but when you want to use the full potential of the racket, you better make sure to hit the ball close to the center. The precision may not be as pronounced as with the Pro, but the MP has some other advantages when it comes to manoeuverability, especially at the net. As I like to often play doubles/mixed, this is important to me. Quick responses and reflexes at short distance from your opponent - no problem with this racket. To me, this is the ideal racket for recreational players with some ambition at club level competitions. I can only recommend giving the Gravity MP a try.

I just picked up a used 2019 gravity tour, it hits amazing. Does feel a bit light, my forehand went to the next level with this, but my OHBH which is usually my strength suffers , cant seem to get the penetration , the flex isnt what im used on the backhand and slices are popping up. I was using a much stiffer pro staff 97 before this so might just be an adjustment period. Im not sure what the balance of the gravity tour I have is, but it weighs 332g with 2 overgrips and it feels quite head light.

Hi there, i think it sounds like youre much more used to higher weight racquets which have alot of stability from your added lead to the hoop - gravity tour stability is good if you compare to other light racquets, but not so comparable to a fully heavy customized one If you want one that is more stable and not so hard to use, you should try Gravity Pro instead, and then if 100% stable, a little bit of weight needed only to fix it

Thanks mate! If you want a Gpro at the SW the same as the TW listing, it would need to be about 30pts lower than the strung SW So Gpro is about 332, you need around 300-302, assuming if you are using a full bed of poly strings at average of (1.25mm or 16L), if you use multi or syn gut, they will be a bit lighter and the SW will reduce by a point or two Also my 18g (1.15mm) strings weigh 4g less than 16L, so they reduce SW by roughly 3-4 pts Hope that helps!

Today i play tested again and by accident a gravity tour. Boy oh boy. This is not only the best feeling head racquet but one of the best out there. I believe the only model that can challenge the connected feel of blade or Volkl c10 evo. The funny thing is that the one i tested was so quick and easy to use unlike my playtest 1 year ago that i couldn’t even swing it. Head must fix their QC…… it’s like playing different racquets. Also the 300 power level is misleading. This racquet definitely can push and punch more than a radical mp and more than an even leaded extreme tour. And if you go for it…. it creates a more heavy ball even than the more powerful speed mp auxetic. Best aspects of it was serves and returns…. So easy with great energy return. I am so eager to try auxetic version.

  • @ACTennis

I don't believe auxetic version is going to do anything relevant, it will probably change the feel just a tad, but the rest will come down to what the spec is that you receive and how good the quality control is The feel on the current gravity is good already, there's not much up you can go from here unless they can change the mould slightly in the future to make it slighlty faster

MP gives alot of spin, but lacks some stability because swingweight is very low, youd need quite alot of weight to improve it, the Tour is only better because swingweight generally starts quite high, almost 325 at minimum, but from what ive seen normally 330-350 Tour will be harder to genetate top spin yeah, you can maybe counter it weight thin strings like i mentioned in the vid - it is slightly open 18x20 but still not open enough if youre used to open pattern

Normally its about 30pts difference between strung and unstrung for roughly a normal 1.25mm poly that's not heavier than others, something standard maybe like a Poly Tour Pro or something , the thinner the string the lower the swingweight, so if you use 1.15mm like i do, then i think its around 3-4pts lower Very difficult to get one on perfect spec if it's unstrung, so id normally buy one thats just a low swingweight and add tiny bit of weight if its off, that is more likely and easier to find

Totally dependent on your ability and preference of racquets - ezone tour is harder to move around due to a head heavier balance and thicker beam I dont think its provides any more spin potential than the GPro, and as for power i swing much faster from its thinner beam so i get more power from GPro, but if you can swing the same speed with Ezone tour it will have more plow and power I still use GPro as my main, and will be interesting if i ever find anything better

I threw on a leather grip to reduce the 4HL balance and then felt like I could swing through the air faster than my gpro. I'm starting to suspect I got a poorly spec gpro and yonex swingweight is alot more consistent to what they advertise. I like the more solid feel on the ezone and the balance feels better on my one handed backhands. But I guess each racket suits to each person differently. Hi, thanks! It depends what you need, and how strong you are, both feel pretty nice and i don't think you will suffer from shock impact to the shoulder, but their weight and swingweight is very similar (too heavy of a weight and technique issues may cause shoulder problems more) Speed MP will give you more power and spin and still play relatively soft, much more user friendly - the Gravity Tour will require more work, but lots more control and stability I would recommend actually the Black Graphene 360 Speed MP, instead of the white one, it's easier to use than the white one and provides similar characteristics It's also what my partner now, and would be much cheaper at the moment to buy

Hi there! I used to use the Blade 98 Counterveil, after i switched to the Gravity Pro, it took me about 2 weeks to adjust to the extra weight, but it was night and day for me, have won a good majority of my matches including tournament play (note that im a highly aggressive player) - Gravity's may not provide enough power for some females, unless they are naturally big hitters, they are primarily control racquets. My partner also plays tournaments, did not gel with the Gravity MP, but used the Pure Drive and now the 360 Speed MP to great effect - It could be that the Gravity MP swingweight was a bit higher, and slowed down her swing speed capabilities which decreased her power.....or that the Gravity MP just isn't as powerful as the Speed (which it isn't) - if it's the latter, then Tour should be a good choice - A secondary choice could be the 360+ Speed MP (latest version), it has a more similar feel to the Gravity compared to the Touch, but will give you more power, but also note swingweight is quite high Just make sure their swing weight is measured before you buy, because they both have much higher swingweight compared to the Speed Touch MP - 2nd generation of gravity is likely just a paint job , i wouldn't expect many changes, probably released next year though, they do claim perhaps some new tech, but i am doubtful about legitimacy

@@adimperial - That makes more sense to why she struggled with the Gravity MP actually. the Tour & 360+ Speed could be a bit cumbersome (i assume), because my partner is 5'8, pretty strong w/ an athletics background, and i wouldn't put her with swingweights over 323 - Many females might struggle with a SW 325 & over, unless they are those tall skinny strong ones,, so i would just be weary of the 2 racquets i suggested actually because they have a SW of 325-328 - Don't be afraid to demo racquets that are 285g unstrung, So even 360+ Speed MP Lite might be a good option, because it will have same characteristics but just won't be anywhere near as hefty. If you need more power, add tiny bit of weight, bumping SW from 310 to 315 or so and counter balance. That actually would just give you a unstrung weight of 295 anyway, but SW more manageable - But that's up to you to decide. So others i would suggest are e-zone 100 (or 100 lite) , and extreme mp lite. Newest extreme will come out in a couple months with 360+, that should be pretty good racquet if you aren't in a rush

Hey mate, coming from 6.0 95 and being your stature, really shouldn't have an issue with the GPro despite it being not as headlight - if you are strong enough, it's Pro 150% Gravity is by far the most unique and forgiving racquet on the market, you mistime, mishit anything, it still feels sweet, so if that's what you're after then it's the right pick Serving won't be as nice as the 95, not many racquets are as good as it is, but it does provide a good enough ball despite, it's more so that's 100 sqin compared to the 95, so it's not going to be quite as precise, but once you get adjusted to it, you can still do plenty of damage One thing i'd say is, the feel should likely be on the less familiar side, where it'll provide more ball pocketing and flexibility in the feel, than the Hyper PS, being more direct and point and shoot, but if that doesn't bother you, then you are in the clear Lastly, if you are able to somehow get swingweights measured, that would be important, getting an unstrung one about (300) or strung no more than 335 (which would be 305 unstrung), you will absolutely get the best experience Let me know if you got any other questions, happy to answer

At equal specs, just the MP, but Tour would be better for all out swinging and maintaining that power with the tighter pattern, MP i feel would spray alot more

Had a hit with MP and Tour today and I was honestly amazed at how well they both played. Massive sweetspot, soooo easy to use, easy power, easy spin (even the Tour), easy depth, very comfortable etc. The specs don't make sense because they were both light (295g and 305g) and 3HL and 4HL but they were so easy to swing and very manoeuvrable. Didn't feel head weighted at all - just felt light and very whippy. You could rally all day long with either racquet without making any UEs. Really need to play a match with each one of them see what's what when the pressure's on but I would happily have either one of them in my bag for those days when you just want an easy hitting racquet (I normally use the old Prestige MP which is 10x more demanding!!)

Yep , there's almost a gravity for everyone out there haha, i had 3 of my friends convert to the MP after they had a hit with it The only thing it lacks is the extra precision if you're an ultra aggressive player, you won't be able to find the lines consistently enough

@@ACTennis Yeah, there's always a trade off with a bigger headsize/sweetspot. I just wonder whether the greater % and reduction in errors the rest of the time makes up for that though. The biggest unknown for me at the moment is actually the weight and how well it holds up against big hitters. At such a light weight I'm wondering how well it will hold up against big servers, when you don't have time to take a swing on the ball and have to chip or block returns etc. Most light racquets I used tend to buckle so we will have to see...

@@svlagonda7417 With a tiny bit of lead, stability is decent on bigger balls even, i played a tournament with it and when i wanted to blast people off the court i could, but when someone was capable of defending more shots, the risk to my shots significantly increased Lead is tricky because it inceases power but wont make it magically more controllable, so if this weight doesnt work at your level or gamestyle, itd be just a good secondary option for fun, or if you can manage to play it near stock, thats probably the best way to utilize this frame

@@ACTennis What string/tension did you use? I hardly ever use 16g but I'm wondering whether a slightly thicker string would be more suitable so that the control doesn't go out of the window if the lead tape starts getting slapped on...
