I just want to say that it is a thrill to see younger people enjoying the music that I grew up listening to. I was in my teens when this song was a hit, and I've now reached retirement age and I'm enjoying remembering the truly good times I had back then with this kind of music to listen to. I didn't know it was good times back then, because I was 15 years old, and you know how difficult being that age could be. Thank you for what you do and keep on doing it!

Not one bad song in their entire catalog!
No one has a bigger catalog then Steely Dan
I grew up in the 70s and Steely Dan was one of my favorite bands. They have so many good songs that you could do 3 a day for a week and not have a bad song. You have Peg, Hey Nineteen, Aja, Deacon Blues, Do it Again, Josie, Reeling in The Years, Ricky Don’t loose That Number and so many more. I think Donald Fagen is a musical genius and Jeff “Skunk” Baxter was one of the greatest guitarist of all time.

They've done "Do It Again". They'd have to do "Do It Again" again. Seriously though, I agree with your choices 100%. I also added Bodhisattva in a different comment. I'd love them to react to "Hey Nineteen" next, if only for the Aretha Franklin reference, now that they know her a little bit.

SD is 🔥. So many more classics for you to dive into: Peg, Time Out of Mind, Josie, Kid Charlemagne, Aja, Black Cow, Deacon Blues, FM (No Static At All) and too many more to list. You could do one SD a week and go for months.
You can’t go wrong with ANY Steely Dan song. Walter & Donald were the ultimate musical geeks!
In case you haven't heard them yet, I think "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Peg" were possibly their biggest hits -- and easily two of their greatest songs. Steely Dan has so many great tunes it's unfair really. And like with this one, while their music dazzles you their lyrics make you do a double take.

Crazy you've only done 3 Dan songs. Most reactors fall far into the rabbit hole, so deep, so good
I really like this song, but my favorite era of Steely Dan is the late 1970s. I highly recommend checking out “Kid Charlemagne”. It has one of the best guitar solos ever done on record and has a funky jazz vibe. Steely Dan’s album “Aja” is classic. And I used to not be a fan of their music years ago. I thought it was pretentious crap, but oh how I was wrong. So wrong. Give “Aja” a listen. The title track is amazing.

Aja marked a change in their sound, as Donald Fagen decided to write and produce the sort of sophisticated music he'd always wanted to but wasn't willing to risk in their earlier career. The intro to Josie is a remarkable chord progression that just shouldn't work but does, exceptionally so... and then the bass comes in, kicking it into life.

Between 1972 and 1980, Steely Dan released seven perfectly-produced albums. Though some are better than others, there's not one bad song. Never off-key, not one missed note. These guys were perfectionists.
You haven't even scratched the surface of Steely Dan. It gets better and better the deeper you go.
"Deacon Blues" by Steely Dan--one of their biggest hits, and a sublime song.
They nearly stood alone when it came to the "type" of music they wrote and performed - I especially like their rendition of the Duke Ellington classic "East St. Louis Toodle Ooo. Can't Buy a Thrill was a great album.

I got a job at a radio station that I ended up working at for 10 years because I included that tune on my application demo tape...
Honestly when this song came out, I just really loved the beat, the bass, the vibe, I never really paid much attention to the lyrics😂😂
Steely Dan is known for their intricate and meaningful lyrics. Like this song with the verse, "Like the castle in its corner in a medieval game". Here, they are talking about the game of Chess. If yall know anything about Chess, there is a Chess piece called a Castle or a Rook. And the Rook or Castle always starts the game in the corners of the board and has only two types of moves, vertically or horizontally. They are comparing the man in the song to this chess piece, in which he feels cornered and only has limited moves available to him. Just brilliant! And the next line: "I foresee terrible trouble, And I stay here just the same". Is just as lucent in its meaning and you can feel his pain and confliction. Just brilliant again!

I, too, saw them before Walter Becker died and it was the best concert I had seen in a long, long time. Incredibly tight. It cost a lot to see them but it was well worth it. I think Don Fagen is still touring and I imagine the band is just as tight.
Steely Dan gave me so much ‘70’s satisfaction; their work incorporated jazz elements and most tunes had brass complement. They and the Doobie Brothers were wonderful.

Funny thing about Steely Dan is that you can hear their songs without really paying attention and be all into the music and stuff, then when you start really listening to the lyrics, you'll often be like, "Hold up. _That's_ what this song is about?" 😂 This one's a lot more straightforward, though - a lot of their lyrics need a deep dive to figure out what they're really saying. Loved the look that Amber gave when she first realized what it was about, lol.

So many great songs from this band. "Do it Again" is my favorite.
Steely Dan is one of the deepest rabbit holes you could go down for 70's music (way bigger than Steve Miller). Very difficult to name a bad song. Thus far, you guys have pretty much focused on their earlier works. Their music evolves over the course of their discography into a more up tempo sound that I think you both would really enjoy.
@flarrfan

I have trouble thinking of one good Steve Miller song...
This also stands out from the rest of Steely Dan's musical catalog in that it's one of only a couple of songs that aren't sung by Donald Fagen. A man named David Palmer sings lead on this one - and apparently in some of their early live appearances, Palmer sang pretty much all of the songs that Fagen sang on recordings, due to the latter having some pretty intense stage fright in those days. Palmer was really only with them for 2 years, however, and eventually quit the music business altogether to pursue a career in digital photography.

@@hartleycwhite I disagree, David Palmer leaves the snarkiness out that Fagen would've added and Palmer sounds more bemused than Fagen would have.

"Rikki Don't Lose That Number" is a great one from Steely Dan, and it was a bit hit for them in '74.
Steely Dan is not a 'he', it's a 'they'. Steely Dan is primarily two dudes, the two core members were Walter Becker and Donald Fagan. This song was with their first singer, later, Donald took over the vocals. I've always liked this track. There's so many good Dan songs I would have to list 40 songs or more, they're just that good. My favorite album from them is Aja(pronounced Asia), and the title track Aja is probably my favorite track by the Dan. They started out with a core band and moved on to using various studio musicians. They would use a lot of them, and swamp them out depending on who they thought would contribute the most to whatever particular track they were recording. They were perfectionist in the studio, and spent a lot of money and time to capture the best performance of a song, no matter what. Steely Dan, named after a prosthetic phallus in William S. Burroughs's novel Naked Lunch.
Steely Dan is my groove. They lean toward jazz. Studio perfectionists 😊 ☮❤🎶
Rikki Don't Lose That Number by Steely Dan, another great one!
Steely Dan is musical perfection!
Steely Dan is a fantastic group! You should listen to “Black Cow” off the Aja album. So jazzy and fun, with some killer sax work, Amber!
LOVE this band... you should definitely check out more by The Dan.. one of my favorites is Babylon Sister (shake it) and Janie Runaway.. along with Kid Charlemagne. A lot of their songs have veiled drug references due to Walter Becker's (one of the two founding members) struggle with heroin addiction. Their catalogue is extensive and spans decades.. you won't be disappointed! Love the channel guys.. keep up the good work. Stay safe everyone and peace out!
Tip of the iceberg guys. I recommend "Kid Charlemagne", "Babylon Sisters", "Black Cow", "Don't Take Me Alive", "Aja", "Show Biz Kids", "Peg", "Got the News", "Haitian Divorce", "Pretzel Logic", "Deacon Blues", much more..
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Black Friday", "Doctor Wu", "The Fez", "Haitian Divorce", "Deacon Blues", "peg", "Josie", "Hey Nineteen"
Love Steely Dan. We have a running joke in my family if we don’t know who an artist is when a song comes on we say it’s Steely Dan. (Of course this was back before Google, if no one knew who it was, it stayed that way) 😂

This song was the second song after "Do It Again" off their debut album!! Talk about a 1-2 punch! The rabbit hole is deep and the numbers in the Dandom are plenty.

Great song by a great band, I was fortunate enough to see them twice in concert and they sound just as good live as they do on CD.
This song was featured in the movie "American Hustle " (2013) of director David O. Russell.
Love their initially cryptic sounding lyrics that I tend to understand the more I listen to them
I've always believed that Steely Dan is the epitome of irony, in that no two of their songs sound alike, but when you hear one, you know it's Steely Dan. SD tops my stuck on a desert island band list. Please do more. Thank you for what you do. We enjoy you two very much. ✌️

You have not even scratched the surface of Steely Dan. Josie, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Deacon Blues, Babylon Sisters, Black Friday, PEG, the list just goes on and on.
The first person that knows what the eponymous Steely Dan was named after wins their very own slightly used steely dan. Here's a hint the answer can be found in the pages of the book Naked Lunch by William S Burroughs
Their first 7 albums from 72 to 80 are filled with great songs

One of the best bands! Sooooo many great songs by them. Peg, Aja, Hey Nineteen, etc. So many sounds from this group. And love this song!!! ❤️
The reason I keep coming back to this channel -- of all the reaction channels -- is because the two of you are just so damn likable. Sometimes you drift off into never-neverland with some of the songs you choose to listen to. (I'm a "play the hits" kinda guy.) But with this particular song -- one that was never released as a single -- it was one of those rare album cuts that everybody knew. (In this case, because Steely Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill" album was just so popular.) FYI: Over the weekend, I watched two documentaries on HBO Max that I'm certain you would enjoy. One was on Dionne Warwick. A giant in the industry. And the other was on Linda Ronstadt. If there was a Mount Rushmore for female singers, it would be hard not to include Linda Ronstadt on it. I know how you enjoy listening to this old music, but if you actually learned about these artists (by watching these documentaries and so many others like them), I'm certain it would broaden your appreciation for their art.
Absolutely explore Steely Dan a lot MORE !!!! There is so much cool music there. You have simply scratched the surface.....
