Facts. I'm 6'2 275 . I go out of my way to leave people alone. If somebody is inexplicably aggressive with me, I just assume they are: 1.Trained. 2.Armed 3. Crazy Either way I'm not interested.

Sir, I used to be an EMT and I have seen violence and the results of it. Everything you said in this video is spot on. Scooting on one's behind is not self defense. There is about 36 techniques that are actually practical for street application from Gracie JJ, but even they teach that the ground is the absolute worst place to be in a fight. Their mindset is get back up ASAP. Their system is for the worst case scenario if a fight goes to the ground. Ryron Gracie fought wrestler Josh Barnett and lost, went back to the drawing board and learned from his loss. My humble advise to you is to stop wasting your time with these keyboard warriors because you are way too intelligent and talented to be addressing them. The rest of us want you to keep teaching and to flourish in every area of your life. Best wishes.

In relation to bjj and self defense. I was doing a drill in bjj class with this woman. The instructor said after you do "such and such" put them in your guard. The woman was confused. She said, "you want me to put him in my guard?" I told her in a self defense situation you would just try to stand up but in sport you put me in guard. I don't know man sometimes this bjj stuff seems ridiculous to me.

Learning self defense is a good thing. Learnng the law of self defense is also a good thing because often even when you win a street fight, you still lose because of the possible legal ramifications, which includes catching a criminal case for excessive use of force. Besides, even a 12-year-old child is a very dangerous adversary if he OR she is armed with a firearm, and there are actually 12-year-old children illegally armed with firearms. I worked in State of Ohio prisons for 34 years, and I was told many times by convicted felons that they wished that they could go back in time and walk away from what put them in prison. For instance, many prison inmates are in prison for seriously hurting someone over a cigarette or because they couldn't control their anger over other petty things.

Spot on, I am a BJJ practitioner and agree in a lot of points you mentioned, the self defense aspect of BJJ must be extra cultivated by the person who practices it. The culmination or cross training in different styles with reality based scenario training including weapons is crucial. But then there is the point of being willing to execute extreme violence in millisecond, that's the next point you actually cannot train, you must experience it, actually a lot to know how to deal with and to know how to use it, for 99,99 percent of martial artists nearly impossible.

I’ve been grappling for years. I’ve also been working with mentally disabled and violent individuals for most of my life. There’s a reality you come face to face with when someone comes at you that weighs over 220 LBS and is over six feet tall. Dropping to the ground is not your first thought. I don’t use the term Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I don’t like the tradition and I don’t like wearing a Gi. I like NoGi grappling because it is more realistic. It is part of MMA, like wrestling is part of MMA and other disciplines too, but it’s not everything needed to be a complete fighter. We do a lot of stand up in our gym, takedowns and recovering quickly from a takedown. You go with guys that are bigger than you all the time. The leg lock game that has developed in NoGi grappling has carried over into MMA and sometimes it works, but others you get knocked out. It all comes down to the individual applying the submission, his opponent and the circumstance. Training a martial art is generally a good thing, but in the real world there are a lot of variables that you simply can’t account for. Size matters, I’m not the biggest dude, but at 5’11” 210LBS I’m not smallest either, and that helps.

Reminds me of DC saying he refuses to sleep on his back to this day bc his coach beat in his head not to hang out on his back. He said even if he was doing sit ups he would yell at him to get off his back if he was relaxing afterwards. Some of it sounds extreme but something tells me DC wouldn't hang out on his back in a real self defense situation 😂

Violence is its own animal. I don’t remember the name of the UFC fighter; during a home invasion… he was dragged around the house like a rag doll. The guy was a 21 year old meth head( who was a high school wrestler). He fought the kid for 15 mins until cops showed up. His jujitsu wasn’t up to a wrestling fiend. Theres always the myth of the untrained fighter.

The ones who matter know that you are a legitimate authority and a wealth of knowledge. It's incredible find someone who says many of the same things about MA that I've said. As to BJJ, I remember rolling in a workshop and having my opponent -- a grown arse man -- lie down immediately. I was so taken aback that I told him this isn't martial arts and get up on his feet. I started MA in 1972 and my Judo sensei back then would have given him a pink belt.

First off, I have to say that I love your channel and have taken a lot of your advice to heart. I have been a BJJ practitioner for awhile, and I agree with what you talk about in terms of the arts weakness. If anyone disagrees, I think that they just don't wanna see it. The reason why I wanted to learn BJJ is because I believe in being well rounded and wanted to have the skills if the worse case scenario happened and a fight went to the ground. The problem with BJJ is not the art itself, it's the idiots that think that BJJ is a one stop shop for self defense. There are techniques that I would absolutely use in a street fight and some that I would never use because it would get me killed or maimed. Luckily for me, my coach encourages us to learn different arts especially ones with striking for this very reason. He himself has been a judoka for over 30 years and is well versed in all types of self defense arts. Most of the guys I train with are very well versed in a lot of different striking arts and always share the knowledge with me. Because of you, I found a guy where I live that teaches Shotokan Karate that is tailored for the street. I want to get into boxing or either sambo, but there are no good gyms in my city. I really enjoy your content and I have thick enough skin that I can take the criticisms you have of BJJ and add other things that will benefit me in a street situation. Also, I'm 52, and I don't just leave the house with only my hands. 😂

You should be using your size like a man and kick boxing good buddy. So your comment about you being a blue belt and me paying for your trip does not wash with me. If I knew someone that 230 or 240 you get beat like a man 140, but at 230 you have likely lived your entire life beating up 130 pound dudes outside the local tavern. I trained mma fighters and the last thing 230 pound dudes want to do is fight other 230 pound dudes. See I know those things. Now, if I come across a 230 pound dude willing to crack your cranium, you will be the first one I contact. Sound good?

You say your channel is made to preserve braincells and save lives but as of recently your videos have only been criticizing BJJ and its practitioners. It's ok to think wrestling is the superior grappling sport. It's ok to think Jiu-Jitsu dumb. But what is not okey is calling an entire community of martial artists foolish and stupid based on a few interactions you've had. All types of people are dumb and it's unwise to assume something about and entire community based on a few foolish individuals. By stating you would stab Gordon Ryan your not proving a point, your stooping to the level of the person who made the original comment. None the less I appreciate your love of combatives and hope more success for you in the future.

Let me add something to this. The whole idea of BJJ, Karate, Boxing , wrestling, etc. as combat in and of itself would have been unintelligible to our ancestors. Whose ancestors? ALL of them. Bare with me. A man in almost any culture walking down the street over 200 years ago would not have a the luxury to call the police. It didn't exist. WE have that luxury. My forefathers, your forefathers, etc. most likely would have carried a weapon, whether it was a working knife, dagger, sword, etc. The Scots carried the dirk, Japanese a Tanto, you name it, every culture had something. Hell, the gunfighter of the old west carried a gun. If violence erupted, if you tried to scoot your butt to the floor, they would have looked at you like you were an insane person, and then ended your life. Butt scooting is obviously a thing now (why I don't really know), but I suggest only that Gordon Ryan wouldn't have matched well against a 400 year ago Italian sword master who might have killed a dozen men before his thirtieth birthday.

I wonder if you, or Rickson Gracie who grew up in Brazilian barrios, has seen more violence. People should take a self defense art...any self defense art and have some violent competitive rounds. The best think you learn is not techniques...it's that pressure test. If you've been there and dealt with it, you're much more prepared than someone who's never been in that situation. Even if they have six black belts.

@USALibertarian: That is a very legit question and asked in a way that deserves an answer. I know that many whites know violence and teach self defense well. My point was aimed at the American whites who keep trying to sell everyone on the idea that BJJ and butt sliding is self defense. While I am sure that some blacks and Hispanics train in BJJ, the core of people who claim in to be the ultimate martial art are generally white AMERICAN.
