How much bjj does one need?Well, having watched many Gracie fights, the basics executed.at high levels are really all that are necessary. Even old school vale tudo used that mentality. Boxing has about six punches used in high level combinations. Bill "Superfoot"Wallace used one leg, three kicks and two punches. The mastery of basics coupled with a high fitness level is what is needed.

@mjp-bi3re: "the basics executed at high levels"lol. In other words, what I have been saying in all of my videos for over a decade. ooooook. The boxing thing about 6 punches, ah, that would be mine too. Dude, you have to be original or at least let the videos where I said those things, get old. lol

Boxer with a blue belt is a bad man. I’m a black belt and a former boxer myselfl. As an instructor myself I will say that most bjj schools are legit. There is maybe 10-12 schools in my area and maybe 2 are suspect. Most bjj players aren’t fighters. Only bjj athletes. They can’t fight but if they grab you it’s over.

One scammy thing about BJJ that I never see brought up by anyone is the frequent refusal to teach leg locks to new students most of the time. It’s a way to prolong development for more revenue and the cost is smaller students having less tools to deal with larger opponents. If a bigger opponent is competent in grappling it doesn’t matter how much competence the smaller one has. They’re going to get dominated. That’s where switching to attacking legs matters. For an art to claim that it’s great for small vs big but a woman has to wait till purple to train heel hooks is criminally hypocritical.

I don't think it's scammy, but I agree that it can be a downside of not doing it for defense purpose. A good reason not to teach it to beginners though is that they are less careful and it's easier to get badly hurt with a leg lock, in part because the opponent might not know when to tap because it's less hurtful than other submissions. Me and my friend (both white belt without strips yet) were training just to practice some techniques and roll for fun at home, but I was a member in a bjj gym and he used to be a trainer in a mma gym who took bjj leson with the head coach there and who recently join another bjj gym. Without even trying, he hurt my knee almost badly ( my knee literally made a " pop" and I was feeling my knee for at least 3-5 days), not knowing we were not supposed to do leg locks. For that reason I don't think it's a bad thing and it's not like a small girl who trained 6 months in bjj was going to defeat a big man, even with leg locks. Also, leg locks makes you more vulnerable to punches so it's not that much more practical in a self-defense purpose.

Truths. Once you add striking to wrestling, it exponentially increases its already unmatched ability to dictate positioning. And there are just way more configurations of positions for "I punch you in the face and win" than there are "I can successfully submit you from here".

I'm a 2 year White Belt in BJJ, but at this point I feel like I can out grapple the average joe, and now I'm only training to beat BJJ guys at BJJ. That said Im in a very aggressive competition mma wrestling and striking focused gym. We actually have a pro fighter fighting this weekend.

Thanks for the videos @TheUmmahFightCamp just wondering if you have a video comparing Judo to other grappling sports like BJJ. I ask this as I am contemplating spending $200 per month on BJJ tution just as you have mentioned in your videos vs $30 per month for Judo. Ne wasa in Judo covers the groundwork and it looks like BJJ but is it really and can you compare the two? My goal is just personal physical and mental health not anything fancy.

In the match the judo guy threw the bjj guy to the ground. I thought since he was a judo guy he was going to play the ground game with the bjj guy. Nope, the judo guy instantly went for the ground and pound and won the match.

Wrestling and Judo are ve😢ry effective. I am a novice in bjj at best, but when I fought an amazing and deadly striker named Israel Adesanya, I used my stand up (grappling and striking) to take the fight to the ground and it was my groundgame that kept me from losing and on the attack!

@lannelbishop3668: A talented Kyokushin black belt will ko most opponents he fights if he raises his punching ability to the head from the body. The first thing I would teach is takedown defense. Next, easy transitioning to only about 4 submissions. It is not for you to learn everything. The goal is for you to learn and fight to your strengths. As I have said before almost ALL of the ufc superstars are NOT bjj fighters.
