    There was never a Golden Age of Tyler Perry. Black people were and still are starved to see themselves represented in films. Due to being underrepresented in film, black audiences were willing to ignore the fact that his movies are mediocre at best. His movies do not have in-depth storylines such as a Spike Lee. He came into prominence due to his Madea character which went from the stage to movies. Even those are a poor imitation of Eddie Murphy playing different characters so nothing original. Tyler has made good in Hollywood because his movies are like black soap operas. Yet for those of us who prefer more substance in films, he is not a very good filmmaker.

    There was a TP era my bruddah. Just like hip-hop, every movie is NOT meant to have SUBSTANCE!!! Some are just meaningless fluff, meant to entertain it's core audience. We can critique, but look take his movies for what they are, and enjoy them or not. Just don't EXPECT cerebral, groundbreaking or intellectually challenging FILMS from him, and you're experience may be different... That is all.

  • @michaelfreeman6608

    @504 You are simply pointing out the obvious. Of course, there is a " Core Audience for his movies" There is a core audience for plenty of things that are mediocre and actually pretty poorly done. I had a lengthy conversation with the president of Sony Pictures years back. He told me that "movies and television are not about quality it's about who will watch it. " He went on to say if you put a test pattern on television if it gets good ratings that is what is going to get green-lit in Hollywood. Movies are there to be critiqued good, bad, or indifferent. It's time-consuming and it's time you will never get back. Tyler Perry movies have their place in the same way a Lifetime movie has. Yet compared to great films they are not very good.

    You’re right. I always knew his movies were low quality, but I actually enjoy B-movies and bad movies. I looked at his movies as camp. I can see now the past few years, it was not camp, it was in fact terrible writing from someone who is narcissistic enough to think they have no room for improvement.

    When the mom said, "Stab her!" I cackled lmao. Like, like girl what??? The end felt like he watched Get Out recently and tried to shoehorn the same ending. My friends and I watched it the other day, and I 100% agree with you that Jimmy (Ronreaco Lee) was the only one who managed to ignore the bad direction enough to act lol. I've seen a lot of these actors in other things, and they were decent to really good, so it just shows how bad scripts and bad direction can really fuck with actors sometimes. Kelly's been in a couple of rom-coms, which were 1000% better than her acting here. You're also definitely right regarding the plot/writing -- every line was exposition, and it felt like I was reading the character descriptions half the time. His work has never been great, but at least you could see somewhat more care in his earlier movies. The scripts are always stereotypical and heavy-handed... but I wouldn't at least be watchable if you want a campy time. These Netflix movies?? Borderline unwatchable; this is better than a Fall from Grace (a low bar, lol), but if I wasn't watching it with other people, idk if I would make it to the end. Bro, get a writer's room; refusing to hire additional writers is not a flex. IN FACT, it's a fucking normal part of the industry to have writing teams, especially for shows. And for movies, please get a writing partner and give your staff a realistic filming schedule. This 5 days, 20 days bullshit is honestly disrespectful to everyone on set; you're making them look bad, tbh. As you said, he can't ride the "look how many Black actors" I hire talking point when he doesn't hire Black writers, care about the hair/wigs of the Black women acting in his films, or give the Black staff enough time to do their jobs well. Additionally sick of him because he recently said he's going to (and has started) use AI to generate video footage and "no longer have to travel locations or build a set." So... he cares about his ability to stay rich and make money and not the lives of people in the industry who do location scouting, set design, build props, etc.

  • @truegrit2011

    Excellent points made. However when it comes to casting, if we're trying to make the story somewhat realistic, everyone can't be super fine and attractive. I'm sorry that's just not the real world. When all the characters in a movie are super attractive, it gives me campy soap opera vibes. I'd rather have a character with a lot of personality that draws me in through their acting, opposed to a pretty face that can't act their way out of a soap commercial. When I see a Tyler Perry movie with a bunch of super attractive men and women, I almost always expect some bad acting. And I'm sorry but a pretty face can't make up for bad acting. 🤷🏾‍♀️

    What bugged me most was that Kelly and Tre were running around on morning shows and internet publications, talking about how excited they are about the film. I feel gas lighted. Tyler is the proverbial emperor with no damn clothes. As far as the beautiful people being cast… I feel like there is an abundance of people willing to get on camera and look cute and not have to do any acting. I’d rather look at people who look like the people I see on a daily basis, that reflect the varied states of humanity, and most importantly will make me feel something with their acting. Will make me think about the character they’re representing, and the importance of the story.

I think the reason Tyler writes his character as sort of caricatures is because he said himself lives in isolation, physical and mental.Unless one has a very great imagination ( Tyler really really does NOT) you have to be around people, lots of different kinds of people in order to write fleshed out great characters and dialogue.

    It's taken me 3 days and I'm at the 35 minute mark. That movie is so genuinely awfully terrible. What pissed me off even more was that the Kelly & Trevante sex scene was to provoke a reaction because the plot line was so trash. I feel they were exploited. A sex scene should add to the film and not be the center of attention, that's all people are talking about.

    We have to remember as an audience that Perry has no formal training or film education. It’s clear this script is in need of writers, preferably of color, that have experience in creative writing and screenwriting. Maybe our bar/ standard is just too high.

    Tyler Perry doesn’t just hate his actors, he seems to hate his audience. He looks down on his audiences if they matter nothing more to him than a dollar. Two weeks to film an entire movie?? He may as well be working for Hallmark.

  • @texvor6949
    @texvor69494 ай бұрын

    As for tyler perry writing, some of his movies that arent based on his material have been good but I think people don't realise what type of format he is using. All his movies share the same format tropes of a telenovella with the stereotypical good, stereotypical bad(which if they us a black actor they will use a very dark shade black person to be the most evil and oddly enough the majority has to be a black woman) over acting, shaky sets, and plot twist after plot twist especially towards the end with melodrama throughout. All he's done is package that format for Black america. And its worked because like when they translated some of these telenovellas to english a lot of our people watched it. The madea format for example is very similar to comedy caribbean theatre where they play it for laughs since the eighties where they have a old or plus sized mother/granny figure stereotypical black woman archetype being hammed up by an actress or usually a dude in a dress . At this point i'm convinced he stumbled upon that and telenovellas and put his spin on it. And the industry wants his stuff to be popular and the main form of black american entertainment. Since his earlier films shows he is capable of going beyond his usual nonsense its clear he cannot do that in order to keep his position with the powers that be. And therefore he has shown no real growth as an artist.

I feel that by being the sacraficial lamb, I have spared many who've yet to watch it from the pain of giving away two precious hours that they'll never be able to get back. The sex scene is absolutely terrible [ who fantasizes about having sex in paint] 4.) Yeah, TP writes a LOT of shows and movies very quickly. The problem? He is NOT a good storyteller, and his lack of creativity is evident in his inability to develop characters. He needs creative writers and an awesome editor. This movie was predictable to me. I figured out so many pieces very early on. There's one thing that I twisted up, but it wouldn't have been unrealistic for TP. I already knew that Ray was setting Zyair up to take the fall for murder, but I initially thought that he (Ray) was cheating on his wife with the Heidi chick, found out she was sleeping with Zyair, and went crazy. He seemed like he could become very violent. "Mea Culpa" was a disjointed hot mess.
