He knew he was dying. That was why he went around finishing everything up, got his suit ready, changed his will. He used his death to save the family.

Yeah. When someone suddenly starts doing those sorts of things out of nowhere it's a well established indicator that they possibly either know they're dying or that they are suicidal. When people have an awareness that they're coming to the end of their life they very often attempt to tie up loose ends and do things they think will help themselves and those they're leaving behind be at peace with it.

Walt actually confessed his sins of killing another man during the war to Tao and Tao only....something Walt did not even open up about during his confession to his priest. I think that speaks volumes about the respect, friendship, and trust Walt built with Tao.

To me it says that killing an enemy during war is not something the Church would consider a sin, so nothing to confess, though it still feels wrong on a personal level.

@@ahad2k11 A. That’s not true. “Thou shall not kill” has no exceptions for war within the Catholic Church. B. Walt at one point says, “The things that really weigh on you are the things you weren’t ordered to do,” that he killed someone trying to surrender, and that they stacked up the bodies they killed. He’s clearly dealing with immense guilt over what he did in Korea. The fact that he doesn’t ask for absolution for his wartime actions tells me that he doesn’t feel he deserves it.

Walt went to the gang at the end with the intention to be killed by them, knowing his sacrifice with witnesses would end the violence by putting them away. He waited till they were all outside aiming at him and baited them into shooting. That's why he started praying before he drew his lighter quickly and why he went unarmed and got all his affairs in order beforehand. Even though Walt was a badass, it would be unlikely for him to be able to kill them all in a shootout, and the survivors might get away or lightly sentenced with self-defense and then continue their violence in retribution.

Exactly. If he'd tried killing them, it would just continue the cycle of violence. This way, his sacrifice at least gives his Found Family a chance.

Walt new he was dying. He sacrificed himself knowing that was the only way Tao & his sister could “ever find peace in this world.” My favorite couple reacting beautifully to one of my favorite movies. Could not ask for anything more!

He went there to die, sacrificed himself so there was witnesses and they would go to prison forever.

My wife and I rescued 2 Siamese/Burmese mixed cats, the male we named BooBoo, and the female was named YumYum. They were great cats.

Walt did not go to the gang house at the end to convince them of anything. He knew that he wasn't coming back, which is why he got everything in order including the suit he was to be buried in. He goaded the gang to shoot him in front of numerous witnesses while unarmed to get them sent to prison thereby saving Tao and his family. Walt was dying, and in the end regained his faith. That is why he went to confession, prayed just before being shot to death and as the camera pulled back, we see him laying on the ground in the same position as Jesus on the cross, symbolizing sacrifice. One of Eastwood's best films.

Clint Eastwood is actually a decorated war veteran. One of his sons, Scott Eastwood has a small role in this movie.

Your pre-movie talk how interesting movies about war and the effects on veterans makes me think you would really get a lot out of "Band of Bothers." Also, it's a series that's wonderfully written, acted, filmed and scored and very popular on reaction channels.

One of my favorite parts of this movie is when they are giving him gifts and hes like "HEY HEY GET OUT OF HERE ALREAD--- is that the chicken from the party???? alright yeah you can bring in the chicken"

Clint Eastwood at his best. I laughed out loud at that scene. My favorite as well.

1. Sue and Yum Yum are a couple of little cuties.😍😍 2. With a family like that it's no wonder Walt befriends the Hmong family. 3. The guy with sue is played by Scott Eastwood. Clint's son. 4. My surrogate father had that collection of tools. 😎 He didn't have all the tools in the world. Just the ones he needed. 5. Guys don't talk to each other like that unless they're very close (or drunk)🙄 6. Walt does have a death wish. He's sick and going to die anyway. He's a hero again🦾 He not only saved Tao and his family, he also got rid of the thugs, and donated the house to the church😇😇

I love "Heartbreak Ridge" - I have not seen any reviews of that movie. I thought is was amazing.

This is a great film and performance by Eastwood , you really get involved with the characters and see Walts attitude change Another top film with an " after the war " theme is " First Blood " with Sylvester Stallone just after he became famous with Rocky , he plays a Vietnam veteran and a monologue he performs towards the end of the film is extremely powerful and also very sad as he talks about what we now know as PTSD Love your channel ❤️

If you enjoyed the story and the directing style of this film, I can't recommend "Changeling" enough. It's another Clint Eastwood directed film, though he doesn't act in it. It's based on a true story and is beautifully told and directed.

Walter Kowalski knew that he was going to die a slow, painful death due to his lung cancer. Then he decided to go out in his own terms and to make his death matter. He began by doing things like getting a hot-towel shave, taking a bath but smoking in the house for the first time, he had a suit made in which to be buried, he gave away things personal to himself like his Silver Star. Finally, he went unarmed to the gang house. He made sure witnesses were watching from all around. Then he committed suicide by having the entire gang open up on him. No Sue and Thau would not have to worry about the gang as they went to prison for murdering an unarmed man in front of witnesses.

I am basically Walt's age and thankfully not like him at the beginning of the film. 😊. Just wanted to say I really enjoy you both. Being a long time movie fan I love watching young people enjoy the films I like. Keep up the great work!!😊👏

He sacrificed his life for his friend and also to do penance for the lives he took in Korea, especially those he was not ordered to take. The greatest act of love is to sacrifice your life for another. Walt liked to fix things, so he fixed Tao’s problem and his own. He made peace with God.

When I was in my first year in college, I got really sick after about six weeks. I lived in a quad dorm room with 3 guys. They could see I was quite ill, and were nervous because they thought I might have a health crisis that they couldn't handle. Then, one of the guys asked a question. He said, "Hey Jeff, can I have your backpack when you die?" Immediately another roommate said, "Hey yeah! Can I have your fan?" I said, "Yeah, you can have all that when I die." A little while later, someone got me to the health center and from there to the hospital.

He didn't go there to make them understand, he went there to be killed while being no threat and having no gun while getting the attention of all the neighbours as witnesses to them killing a man that was just standing there talking so that they would be going to jail for a long time, giving the kid a fair chance for a normal life It is easy to judge others but heroes are usually those that u would absolutely least expect

I really enjoyed your reactions to this movie, but if you think about it, it wasn't really a sad ending, he had his death sentence and had chance to save others and used what was left of his life to accomplish it.

The Hmong actors were not trained actors he went to their neighbourhoods and held open auditions. The actors who played Tao and sue have gone on to have good careers in Hollywood. The only one out of all the Hmong actors that had experience was the one who played spider. I believe one is in the D.C universe now.

As a white American brought up Christian I used to judge people based on them being different. When I was 14 I met kid at the bus stop and we became fast fiends and lifelong friends. His mom is from Peru and dad Costa Rica. People would say racist things to him and it opened my eyes to how stupid racism is. He passed away this year and I miss him dearly.

He went there to die like a solider. He knew that, with all the witnesses, when they killed him they would go to prison for murder. That way his sacrificing his life (short as it would be with his terminal illness), would save tao and his family. "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends." - John 15-13. Walt had no time for the trappings of the Church, but he was a good practicing Christian.

His plan was to make them kill him so they would be in jail for life and never bother Tao and his family again. He knew he was dying of cancer anyway. Because of him being in the Korean War he hated Koreans but in the end he realized they were good people and they grew to be great friends.

In real life, I am positive a tougher family member would have stepped to help them.
