THIS STORY:
1960 NEW YORK MID-AIR COLLISION.
On Friday, December 16, 1960, a United Airlines Douglas DC-8, bound for Idlewild Airport (now John F. Kennedy International Airport) in New York City, collided in midair with a TWA Lockheed L-1049 Super Constellation descending into the city's LaGuardia Airport.
The Constellation crashed on Miller Field in Staten Island. The DC-8 crashed into Park Slope, Brooklyn, killing all 128 people on the two aircraft and 6 people on the ground. It was the deadliest aviation disaster in the world at the time.

The Angel face you see is the Haserot, named “The Angel of Death Victorious". The stoic angel is seated on the marble gravestone of canning entrepreneur Francis Haserot and his family. Holding an extinguished torch upside-down, it represents a symbol of life extinguished. Wings are outstretched and the gaze is straight ahead.
IN THE END, DEATH ALWAYS WINS. LEST THE FACES NOT BE FORGOTTEN...
This channel is focused on casually walking and viewing a handful of the thousands of forgotten names and faces at various cemeteries near and afar. Seeing their faces up close. And when able, telling the stories behind their names.
Most graves are unknown and lost to history.
Some are famous.
And some infamous....
....and some with tragic endings.

Hey Gang, I forgot to mention in the episode that Stephen was traveling alone, he was to meet his Mom and they were supposed to celebrate Christmas in Yonkers with the grandparents and family. So sad to think he was crying out for his parents laying there in the snowbank.

Such a thoughtful gesture to put yellow roses on Stephen's and his parents graves. Stephen was definitely wise beyond his years, that's especially touching. I am a year younger than Stephen and I remember Schwinn bikes and those beautiful Christmas train set ups. Mom would take me to see some that neighbors or some if Dad's coworkers built. Just magical! Thanks for bringing us this tragic yet touching story plus including information on Stephen, who was quite a remarkable young man. 🕊️

This one really hits home for me. I was a little boy, five-years-old growing up in Brooklyn at the time of the crash. The next day, Saturday, my dad took mom and I to the crash site. I'll never forget the scene -- we were in bumper-to-bumper traffic with other curiosity seekers and got to within a a few blocks of the intersection where the United jet fell. I could still see it now -- the tail of the jet with its blue United letters lying right in the middle of intersection surrounded by all sorts of debris. And I recall the smell of things that were burned. My dad said there was a little boy at the hospital who was the only survivor. I pleaded with him to take us there so I could visit him. From what I recall it wasn't far from the crash site. We pulled to the curb by the hospital and I remember begging him to let me visit him but that wasn't to be. He died later that day.

You've recounted the story of this brave little boy with so much tender respect. He seems to have had some sense of his destiny. One can't see all the airplanes hanging from his ceiling, meticulously "engineered" by this little boy, without wondering at the heroic role in aviation he, and all the blessed souls who perished, would inspire for generations, working to make air travel safer. He gave his life, not realizing all the future lives that would be saved because of what was learned in this tragedy. He surely is proud now, in paradise, of having completed his harrowing mission.

This one made me cry. Poor little boy. Learning about his short life just really brought him back to life for a moment. When you talked about instrument only flying, it brought to mind another plane crash, the one Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper were killed in. As I understand it, the crash investigation held the pilot largely responsible for the crash. The pilot's name was Roger Peterson, and he was only 21 years old and newly married. He is buried at Buena Vista Memorial Park in Storm Lake, Iowa, if you're ever in that area. What brought this to mind is that even though Peterson had checked the weather reports several times before taking off. There was heavy snow and it was around midnight. But when Peterson took off, there had been a weather warning he hadn't received, and come to find out, conditions had gotten bad enough that the flight would have been instrument only--which he wasn't licensed for. The biggest issue seemed to have been a Sperry gyro the CAB thought Peterson must have misread, thinking he was ascending when, in fact, he was descending. Apparently this particular gyro was read differently than others. You've probably heard about this one at some point, but either way, I'd love to hear what you think as you are a pilot yourself.

Now that you have me reminiscing about my childhood, as an aside, I recall another little boy that died horribly (not in this incident)), probably around age 7 or 8. I don't recall his name but just to juxtapose the times we live in now and back in that time, this little boy was crushed to death in a freight elevator near the school you mentioned in your video above, St Augustine's. He and his brother were both attending the school as I did too. The mother had just the two boys; the father was a merchant marine and was at sea at the time his son died. This happened a year or two or three after the air crash. As the story went, the boy was playing (mischievously) with a few others in a place where they should not have been, a local factory near the school. Back in those days they didn't have all the workplace safeguards we have nowadays and back then there were plenty of ways a young boy could get into trouble, even killed as the case here. So, again as the story went (I was just a child at the time so I didn't read any news stories, I got most of this information from adults discussing this out loud in front of me) these kids were playing in the building where a freight elevator, with no doors, just an open compartment, had a pull rope to make it lift. Well, the child entered the opening in the elevator and another child pulled the rope and when the elevator began to move the rope puller ran. The child in the elevator panicked and tried to crawl out of the elevator as it was moving upwards but was crushed between floors. To this day, everytime I think of this incident I wonder how the rope pulling child dealt with the knowledge that what he did resulted in another child's death. We didn't medicate our children back then and we didn't have mental health services for instances such as this so the rope puller was likely left to deal with this on his own. In this day and age the lawyers would have been lined up to litigate this wrongful death but in those days it was just considered an accident and the children shouldn't have been in there to begin with was the consensus. The local Funeral Home donated their services to perform a wake and subsequently bury the child. I don't believe the mother or father got anything beyond that. Again, the details of what happened came from hearing the circumstances repeated by adults.

I use to go to Park Slope Brooklyn every weekend to visit my cousins for over 10 years. One day a family member was in Methodist Hospital. I saw that plaque, with the coins attached. I wondered what it was for? Now I know. Very sad to all those that lost their lives. I'm just happy Stephen got to be with his parents when he left this world instead of on that plane by himself.he was truly a miracle. As you can see in family pictures they were a very close beautiful family that did everything together. I really believe the love that boy had for his parents made him fight as much as his little body could possibly let him, just to see his parents again and he did, and his parents got to be with there son one last time. Truly incredible. Thank you so much for sharing this story

Hey Gang!!! Picked up buffalo steaks for the bbq tonight!! Made some tater salad n am tossing the salad right now. I picked over a dozen maters from my garden n some cucumbers n radishes n some peppers. Bella, I hope ur feeling better. Can somebody slice the veggies n put them in these bowls? That way people can put what they want in their own salad. "Isthe773quero" said he had some charcoal so he can get the "barbee" fired up!! The steaks r on ice in the cooler. NaeNae said she would bring "pickle roll ups!!" Sounds delicious!! I see someone brought a couple pies!!! Yum!! What kind r they? We gonna have a feast tonight!! I am so excited for tonights Video Under The Stars!! Hope u are just as excited!! I can't wait!! I'm sure Mr Ron put a lot of work into the video! He does such a great job n when it's over, u feel like u were a part of the episode. Keep up the great job Mr Ron!! Ok, let's get this party started!!!

I was surprised to see this video and thought it was made in response to my request. It's likely a coincidence but I posted a comment in the comment section of one of your other videos last month asking that you do something regarding Stephen Baltz. I was at the time 10 years old myself and this touched me profoundly. It was the first time I truly recognized my own mortality. I lived in Brooklyn N.Y. (On on street named St. Marks Place) at the time of this disaster and attended the Catholic school, St. Augustine's that you mentioned in this video. As a student in school I did not see but heard the wiz of wind and noise of the jet as it went past our classroom window and continued straight up the street where it crashed. Edit- I remember at the time that we, the students in class, didn't know what had happened nor did we see the airplane itself, just the noise and rumbling sound. Additionally, in the aftermath there was a lot of speculation at the time that the pilot was attempting to crash land in a public park, Prospect Park, just about a mile away. The park was large enough to put the aircraft down without any danger to pedestrians on the ground. I wasn't the only child at the time affected by this event but a kid named Geraldo Rivera also was profoundly affected and says that this event and the subsequent news coverage is what caused him to choose journalism as a lifetime trade. Curiously, you've just released another video that discusses a murder in Cary Illinois. My career as an aerospace engineer (Northrop Grumman in Rolling Meadows before I retired to Florida) bounced me around the country and I've lived many places, including Cary between 2003 to 2010 when I retired to Florida. It's surprising that your videos keep highlighting places that I've lived before. Keep up the good work. I enjoy your videos.
