He Gambled His Hall of Fame Career Away - Baseball Storytime (Pete Rose)

Спорт

In the Season 2 Premier of Baseball Storytime, Dawson takes a look at the career and eventual downfall of Pete Rose. Some of the moments covered include his journey to the majors, the Big Red Machine 1970s Reds, his managerial career, record-breaking moments, and gambling addiction that led to his suspension. The questions on where Pete Rose's legacy lies are answered, along with his chances of being reinstated or being elected into the Hall of Fame.

@tavisxavier That's the saddest part. He didn't need to use the roids to be a HOF calibre player, but that's how the roids arms race got going. If the weaker players needed roids to stay in the game, what hope is there for the clean players if the best of the game are roided up. So I can see why baseball feels it needs to take a stand.

He did take amphetamines which is a drug. If he bet on baseball and denied it for so long, how can we believe he never took steroids? There was no testing back then, so it's easy for him to say he never took any, even though the gym he belonged to was peddling them and he was good friends with the gym rats that were peddling them. He cheated baseball by betting on the game. We have no idea how many games he managed incorrectly because he bet on the game and had to win that night while sacrificing the next game. This video says he bet on the Reds EVERY SINGLE NIGHT which is simply not true. He did not bet on them every night. He may have placed bets on sports every night but he did not bet on the Reds every night. This video is a farce.

In this league, you can blatantly cheat your way to the pinnacle of the sport, but you can't bet on your own team to WIN. I'm not saying what Pete Rose did was okay, by any means, but compared to what the Asstros did, Pete is a saint. Pete got 4,256 hits and three world series rings through his blood, sweat, and tears, meanwhile the Astros won a world series through their cameras and trash cans. One of these two is banned forever, the other gets a slap on the wrist. Pete Rose belongs in the hall of fame. Period.

I have said for years that Rose should be in the HOF but also banned from MLB too. People forget that the HOF changed their rules in 1991 that anyone banned could not be on the ballot. That became known as the ‘Pete Rose rule’ cause he was up in 1992. His 4,256 hits is the reason he should be enshrined and his gambling as a Manager is why he should be banned. Why we’ve had this silly debate for almost 30 years is beyond me.

Jim McCracken Should I also tell my kids they changed the rules the year before Rose was supposed to be on the ballot? As of 1990, anyone banned from Baseball had a right to be on the ballot (Shoeless Joe was on the ballot at one time). But the committee changed those rules in 1991, which just happened to coincide with the year before Rose was eligible. Hmmmm......

Jim McCracken You didn’t answer my question. I said he should be banned from Baseball as that’s what it says in the rules. When he was betting on Baseball, the rule also said he was eligible to be on the Hall of Fame ballot. That rule was changed in 1991 after he was banned in 1989 and before he was eligible in 1992. So why did they change that rule? Cause you sound a guy that swears that a rule is a rule.

The quote of "Baseball is a game that is often overshadowed by its dark history" rings so true. I am more inclined to not like Bonds due to his steroid use, (using steroids enabled him to play long enough that is why he hit so many home runs) but it is almost an absolute fact that he was targeted by the media while his teammate Jeff Kent was doing whatever he wants with no coverage. It goes the show the nature of the game, they just want to be proven right. I still have an inclination to not like Bonds, but the fact Pete isn't in the hall of fame is so ridiculous in my opinion that I have to extend that right to Bonds himself also. People also say Bonds was Hall of Fame material in the Pittsburgh days so will give him that given that even though I have not seen him play at that time.

david martinez How about because the year was 1989 and gambling wasn’t considered an addiction, but instead federally illegal for no good reason? Even if he did admit that he had a problem, the consequences were not rehabilitation, but punishment. To get a good idea of how North American sports handled drugs, look at Grant Fuhr of the Edmonton Oilers. He admitted that he had a cocaine problem in 1989 and the NHL chose to suspend him for an entire season even after he got clean in a rehab center in Florida. Meanwhile, players like Jarry Kurry, Fuhr’s teammate, were also doing drugs like cocaine and X, but were not being suspended simply because the NHL didn’t require drug tests at the time and you were punished for admitting you had a problem, therefore creating an incentive to lie about your issues, of in which addicts will always do until they hit rock bottom, even if they are directly confronted about it. Hell, even if you want baseball relevance, Lonnie Smith was suspended for an entire year when he admitted he had a cocaine problem with the Royals in 1987, even after he ratted out fellow players, testified in the Pittsburgh Drug Trials and entered rehabilitation cold turkey style. No matter how you want to swing this, North American sports in the 1980’s was a punishment culture, not a rehabilitation one, and if you understand how addiction works psychologically as well as discriminatory behavior for getting caught, yes. Addicts will lie about their addictions when put in these types of situations. Fuhr lies about his cocaine problems for 6 years, Kurry lied about his problems until he retired (specifically to avoid punishment from the NHL), Smith lied about his problems for 7 years, and Rose lied about his problems for 4 years. And yet, despite this, Rose got the harshest punishment of them all. Think about that.

He's not getting in the hall. Gambling on sports when you're in a position to affect the outcome, whether you're betting on yourself or not, is a big faux pas. It calls into question pretty much every single result while you were in the scheme, and it seriously damaged the integrity of the game. Its like insider trading when it comes to stock broking, which is illegal as well. I don't think he'll get in. The veterans committee and the MLB don't want him there, so he won't ever be there.

Interesting juxtaposition. People debate whether Rose should be in the HoF (I think he should have a special plaque or something, but not till he's dead. Moreover, he should be told that. "We're going to add a plaque noting your achievement, but it will also note that you were banned from the game for gambling, plus you will NOT be an official member of the HoF, and none of this will happen until you are dead. M'kay? And I think Curt Flood should be in the HoF for sacrificing his career. Awesome fielder, good but not great hitter (.293 over 14 seasons, just under 1900 hits). I don't think he would've gotten 1100 more hits or even won an 8th Gold Glove, but today, a player like him would earn a couple million a year easy. Every player who's gotten a big free agent deal since (including Pete Rose) should have given him 5% out of respect for what he did.

Pete Rose has achievements that will likely never be broken and can always know he played hard, managed to win, and never dishonored the game. The rule of gambling is a good rule, he should have steered clear, but it’s time to be human and see the league has allowed far greater transgressions.....
