Actually they shouldn’t, It’s like saying that any ballerina who can do 10 pirouettes should be a soloist, This is such a complex sport, it’s not just about tricks, there are so many factors which include choreography, and her routine was just made of jumps, not even executed that well...

@Mr. DerpyPanda Surya Bonaly was one of my very favorite skaters of this era. I still adore her-and that back flip was AMAZING! And she landed it on one foot! But, honestly? She really did have some major issues with technique and choreography here, (using half the ice to 'telegraph' jumps etc which is really bad). Plus, back flips are illegal in this sport. Surya knew exactly what she was doing when she performed that back flip. She knew it was illegal adn she knew she would get penalized for it. She was also getting ready to enter the world of professional figure skating in which back flips etc are allowed and most likely included it to help get her name out there in the pro world, (and boy did it work!). But she most definitely wasn't underscored here. And I'm certain she knew she wouldn't be getting a medal because she was, in fact, breaking the rules.

She was advised to pull out from the competition but she pulled through, with help of acupuncture and a lot of medication. The back flip she did there, despite being illegal and didn't count in to her total points, was a last minute modification coz she was so in pain. At this point in time the judges actually loved her because she had an honorable reputation (3x World Silver Medalist!) And personally I don’t think she was underscored after 1991. Athletic or not, if you’re not a popular skater you’re getting underscored no matter what. She got 5.2 and 5.3 which I actually think is overscored.

I've seen this a million times, but today heard some background on Radiolab. Notice how she favors her left leg. She was in considerable pain from prior injuries. That's why her technique is fd up. There was a kind of jump she was supposed to do there and knew that she could not. Since legitimate jumps are supposed to be landed on one foot, she thought there might be just an off chance she could possibly get away with a backflip.

  • @gladitsnotme

I'm wondering if "a kind of jump" meant a planned Lutz? It was the only jump she seemed to omit. She couldn't afford another error after the drop on the Toe Loop/Salchow combo and the underrotated Flip. There was no way she could pull off a Lutz at that point, so... to me, yes: a backflip made sense. If you can't get the scores, get the crowd. What does it truly matter if you're 5th or 15th at that point?

I came here after seeing a short doc about her on Netflix, it's called "Losers" and she is featured in episode 4. If anyone wants to see it, I recommend it. The doc delves into her amateur career, her challenges as a Black girl in a sport mostly dominated by thin white girls. Overall, her biggest challenge was that she wasn't the typical skater, she defied all the norms (Black, ungraceful etc.) and that's why she wasn't well-liked by the judges. Although the doc is called Losers, it focuses on losers who eventually managed to find their salvation, and triumph beyond their loss. In her case, her freedom came when she started her professional career after her last Olympics (the one in this video). She finally felt free to do whatever she wanted, and she shone brighter as a professional skater.

  • @snowangel7980

The documentary is a pity party. She wasn't well liked by the judges for how many reasons. Her choreography was a mess (not totally her fault but still judged upon), her spins were slow and often traveled, her edge work was shallow, her combination jumps were a persistent struggle for her.... she was good at the backflip, and was far better than most at figure skating, but her skating, as it was compared to her competitors, was lackluster. Good, but not the best. She thinks she was called ungraceful because she was black, but she actually just was ungraceful. She didn't move smoothly across the ice. She embraced athleticism and brute strength in a sport that's ballet on ice-- you shouldn't look like you're putting effort into something. That's why Misty Copeland is so popular despite that she's more muscular than the conventional ballerina. Because despite her body and color she still moves like a ballerina should, as if she's exerting no effort at all.

When she fell at 1:05 she knew the chance for a medal was gone. So she decided that for her very last competition before going into show sports, she would do the rest of her program only for the viewers and herself. The did the backflip she had previously only shown in the shows after the actual competitions and she ended the program with her back to the judges facing the spectators instead. The backflip was officially banned because it was landed on two feet, but of course Surya demonstrated that to be otherwise. Overall, this was a massive eff you to the system that has treated her so badly all these years.
