OMG! When you live in Hawaii, you often think you can go to places anytime, but never do. That Dole and Coffee tour was awesome! Makes me think of school field trips you could go on if one did really well and was being appreciated. Great guide! I would definitely try that tour! You definitely are pros!

I grew up on O'ahu where many people (including my mother) used to work, usually during the summer, at the Dole Pineapple Cannery (now just a shopping/business building near Costco in Iwilei) before tourism offered the low-paying jobs. Friends in high school often got summer jobs picking pineapples on Lānaʻi or working in the cannery. Despite the better pay than at the few fast food places available, everyone I knew hated those jobs, and some quit after a few weeks. Almost all the pineapple plantations are now gone (moved to places with cheaper production like the Dominican Republic). When I was a kid, we hardly ever bought pineapple from a store. One uncle used to work in Wahiawa, and he would bring us a couple of fresh pineapples every time he visited us in town. Actually, nobody could stop you from picking ripe pineapples from the fields you passed. We could also stop along the roads passing the sugar cane fields, and just cut a piece of sugar cane to chew on. we never bought mangoes, lychee, or mountain apples, either. There were always people who shared what they picked from their yards. We also grew guava, strawberry guava, papaya, bananas, macadamia nuts, liliko'i, and coconuts in our yards, so farm tours set up for tourists in the '70s and '80s were definitely not worth paying for to us locals. I canʻt believe the prices they charge for food at Aulani or the Dole Plantation Stop! Iʻm always shocked and reluctant to buy anything when I take visiting friends around the island. But I can see if you didnʻt grow up in the islands, the real farms and manufacturer tours can be interesting.

I worked at the Dole cannery too. Delmonte was next door. They did pay weekly if memory serves. I was there when they took down the giant pineapple at the top of a tower which was used as a giant water tank for fire emergencies and a Honolulu landmark. I remember how loud it was working there.

Hi Bill! Hi Lisa! Wow! What a great invitation! They know how awesome you guys are, so a private invitation to tour means that you guys are known for your amazing vlogs!! We knew that, I'm so happy that others know that too!! What a beautiful plantation! Thank you so much for taking us along with you!! I'm super excited to go back and review your past Oahu vlogs. We are having a 22 family member (family reunion), on Oahu to see my Uncle, who lives there with his son and family, in about a month from now. We have family flying in from Japan, Seattle, SoCal, and New Mexico. With that being said, I'm super excited to try the places that you have shared with us. Especially, ALL of the garlic shrimp places, as my hubby will not be joining us on this trip, which is great for his safety. He's developed a dangerous shellfish allergy in his old age. I cannot wait to get there! Thank you!!

I've done the Dole Plantation and Kukui nut tour and I toured a coffee plantations on Kauai years ago. It's amazing that it takes 2 & 1/2 years just to get 2 pineapples from 1 plant!

Hi Bill, Lisa, Erin, and Christopher! 🙋‍♀️ Super cool tour! I have a pineapple plant in my backyard! I get a small pinepple every other year. Got a Kona Coffee plant in my front patio. It was orig my late Mother's plant. I get enough beans every year to brew 2 cups. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I roast them, then coat them in white chocolate. If the harvest is low, I'll just eat them as a fruit.

We actually cut up 2 (incl the one Chris picked) and ate them. The other ones we shared with the DVC staff. Sharing is caring! =)

Side Note: I WILL NEVER LET A PINEAPPLE 🍍 ROT ON MY COUNTER AGAIN. This is a lot of love and sweat going into a single fruit. #Dole🍍

Brings back memories. We spent summers picking pineapple and working in the cannery. Every now and then we would get sugar pine that was deep orange, not very juicy but like eating a candy bar.

If I eat raw pineapple, the pineapple enzymes mess up the inside of my mouth.
