Having Trouble Falling Asleep

Фильм және анимация

There are times in my life where it just seems my brain forgot how to fall asleep. Then one night I thought, "What if I made this into a video idea?" Then I got excited and thought about it more throughout the whole night. So here you go. Get more sleep!

the whole "feeling your mind drift only for that acknowledgement of make you more awake" is so relatable to me that i am in a state of aw right now. also i have found exercise, eating a big meal, and completing 4 hours of non-stop dancing followed by a half an hour drive home and another hour of getting ready for bed, all really help to get you ready for sleep.

Wow, you're describing exactly what I've been through these past 10 or so years. I've been dealing with depression and sleep deprivation for a long time. Now I'm at the stage where I've got periods of time with good sleep and periods where my brain is full of ideas and won't shut up. For me, being active physically and mentally during the day usually helps. And trying to maintain a regular sleep cycle.

I have similar sleep problems due to anxiety and it feels like my brain is sabotaging me every time I go to sleep. I also have started to take melatonin recently and it has really helped! Another thing I do to calm down and to stop my brain from hating me is a word game that goes like this: You think of a five letter word, like young, then you take each letter, and come up with five words that start with that letter. Young: Y, yeast, yesterday etc. then you go and do that with each letter, once you finish you start again with another word. This eventually makes me feel tired and my brain kinda just shuts down and I'm able to sleep, I encourage everyone to try it!

For the great ideas while trying to fall asleep, keep a small notebook on your bedside table or somewhere you can reach it, write it down, then you can fall asleep without worrying about forgetting it. The best thing I've ever learned about sleep, is that lying there with your eyes closed trying to sleep, can be just as beneficial as actual sleep. It helps me chill out about not being able to actually fall asleep.

I find I think too much, that's why I can't sleep. So I listen to audiobooks, podcasts, or long videos that don't require you to watch, and I just... Listen. Somehow I can cut off my critical thinking while still pay attention, and fall asleep in about 30 minutes. Only part that sucks is finding where I fell asleep so that I can pick back up where I left off. Also I've sort of trained my brain that I'll definitely pick it back up the next day, so if what I'm listening to gets exciting, it won't keep me awake

For my sake, realizing that I always fall asleep to youtube for a REASON really helped - just a little bit of noise in the background that I don't have to focus on makes me pass out almost instantly. I can warmly recommend finding a podcast with a voice you like listening to and putting a sleep timer on it.

Genuine advice from someone who has struggled to sleep their entire life. I finally talked to my doctor about it and let them know how much it was affecting my life, and how I was already doing the usual things like healthy diet, exercise, and a stable routine. They gave me prescription strength melatonin. First two weeks, knocked me out in about 30 mins, it was great. Many months down the line, not as effective anymore, it usually takes two to three hours to fall asleep, but that's compared to five to six hours so still a benefit. And the main thing is, according to my doctor's, seek your own doctors opinion but, melatonin does not bio accumulate nor does long term expose cause your body to develop a dependancy. But I've only been using it for about a year. Hope that helps someone. I'm going to look into cherry juice, haven't heard that one before.

A lot of people try to avoid thinking about things before going to bed. If you are one of those people, don't think about avoiding thoughts, but choose something you will think about. I get a single wordless song in my head and let it play on loop until I fall asleep. Also, laying down for hours with your eyes closed will not replace sleep but it's better than nothing. if that's the best you can do then just do that.

I have a few recommendations: if you can't fall asleep because you aren't sleepy 1) turn off the lights at least 1 hour before you attempt to sleep 2) set a blue light filter on your phone for the night (blue light stops the production of melatonin in the brain which is a needed hormone to induce sleep) 3) don't eat 30 mins before bed 4) right before bed do something relaxing or repetitive to get your heart rate down and start the process of letting your mind drift if you can't fall asleep because of overthinking 1) do something relaxing you enjoy before going to bed (if you do something anxiety-inducing right before you try to sleep of course it's going to follow you into bed) 2) try a sleep meditation (it will help guide your brain's thinking into that peaceful sleep state instead of those intrusive thoughts) here is a link to my favorite sleep meditation channel he has a BUNCH of sleep meditations to chose from kzread.info

Twice I've even slept through my mum screaming in rage from a frustrating dream (yes its happened more than once)

Sometimes my brain wants to think of a million things at once and kind of just wants to be stuck on one thought. When this happens I like to just clear my mind and try to stop thinking, of course you can't completely stop thinking for more than a few seconds but if you focus on not thinking it creates a sort of loop where your brain is constantly saying, "Don't think, wait that was a thought, come on don't think. Wait-" And that knocks it out after a few minutes. But if I wake up at about 3 or 4 AM or have a bathroom dream (which funnily enough rarely involves the bathroom) I'm not getting back to sleep.

I know I'm two years late to this, but here we go! When I'm trying to fall asleep, I keep my brain occupied by coming up with stories in my head. Anything from fanfiction to original stories, I just tell them to myself in my head until I eventually drift off. Surprisingly, this works rather quickly, and I tend to remember the stories from roughly where I left off, so I just continue the story the next night. Rinse and repeat.

It usually starts by me thinking about something, usually from the day, then some imaginative scenarios comes naturally and then I fall asleep, idk how long this process lasts, sometimes it feels like at least half an hour. Also this requires perfect physical conditions, like me not being to warm, good body position and at least some level of tiredness

Okay, here's a tip that helped me stop my mind from racing and actually fall asleep. You have to give yourself the space and time to actually think your thoughts. If you're like me, you have a billion school assignments or are constantly working on projects, or are filling all of your free time watching youtube or netflix. This makes it so you're never actually fully present with your thoughts until bedtime. Instead, you should set aside some time (I do it before bed) to process the events of the day, your feelings, and your plans for the future. For me, this is journaling, but for other people this could take the form of mindfulness meditation, noticing your thoughts and letting them occur as they do naturally and simply observing them. Incorporating this practice into a nighttime routine has been really helpful for me.

The whole “too sleepy to sleep” is accurate. It’s the worst feeling. I notice that when I come home from my 9 to 5 office job, I can fall asleep within a few minutes and then wake up after 2 or 3 hours. But when it comes to sleeping at night, it’s harder. I could write a whole novel about this. Things that have helped me in the past are journaling before bed time. I get a lot of my thoughts out of my brain there. It took a long time for that to become a habit. I had to train myself to be able to write something down and then allow myself to forget it BECAUSE I had written it down. Sometimes routines help but sometimes they make me feel bored and then my mind wanders because it doesn’t feel satisfied. So occasionally, I have to sleep somewhere different in my apartment. This might be sleeping on the couch, sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag or even flip flopping to sleep with my head on the foot of my bed. Then this might only apply to people who are menstruating, but there are times where the cause of my inability to sleep are from changes in hormones about a week before my period. It’s difficult to control these. Even birth control which is supposed to regulate your hormone levels sometimes doesn’t work. In those cases, I often rely on sleeping pills which work most of the time. The other times, I just have to accept that I’m not going to sleep and I just get out of bed and do something else.

I can confirm that having a routine is the best way to sleep every night. The past few months I moved back with my parents due to quarantine. I'm sleeping in the living room and the sun lights the lights the place making me wake up at around the same hour regardless of shat time I slept. The cloudy days I wake up a little later, but never too late because my parents, who have their own routine, will come to the living room making enough noise to wake me up in the process. That may sound annoying, but it really isn't because you are used to wake up in that hour. So every day I wake up at around 9:30-10 am and sleep at 1-2 am. It's not super early, but I don't need to wake up earlier and I wake up naturally, unlike when I was living on my own and was delaying my alarm clock every 10 minutes to eventually wake up at 2 pm resulting to me not only missing my classes, but half of the day.

I saw someplace online where this military officer listed ways to help his soldiers (who were struggling to sleep) fall asleep so they would be well rested for the next day. 1 of them was to relax your body. Relax your toes/feet, relax your facial muscles. Make sure no part of your body is tensed up. And I found that to be extremely helpful. One thing I started doing was thinking about colors. Nothing extreme, just colors like black, white, red, and so on and I would think about things that were calming to me, the same color, and how it felt. For example, black. What is black? It is a dark color that is commonly thought of with the night, the void, darkness, and shadows. Imagine the you are in the void. Just floating. Nothing else matters as there is nothing else that exists. Or night time. Its quiet and peaceful. You can look up and just see the stars. Oh and combining all this with calmly breathing in and out slowly.
