Bob Monkhouse was, indeed, a true genius of comedy. He had thick volumes of jokes collected over a lifetime of writing and had total recall of every single joke. The ones that I admired him for was: "I'm still having sex at 73, which is surprising since I live at No 20." And the other that I think was just pure genius: "When I told them I wanted to be a comedian, they all laughed at me. Well, they not laughing now!" How can you beat that?

It was, indeed, a sad day for Britain when we lost maestro Bob Monkhouse. His brain was the powerhouse and vault of humour and comedy in this country. We will never see the like of him ever again because it will be replaced with smut and degredation for our young children's minds ti ingest, and that's a shame and a travesty for everyone. He could hold a crowd for hours and not one word of smut came from his mouth. His genius didn't need it and his timing was perfect. What a shame!

I don't disagree that he was a comedy genius, and intelligently toned things down for family friendly TV audiences. However, live on stage he could be a blue as any other comedian. But with Bob, it was still a brilliantly crafted hilarious rude gag, never smut just for the sake of being smutty.

I saw Bob at a referees' stag night, just before a cup final. (1979 or 80) He got on stage with cigarette and glass. Over an hour and a half, replenishing the glass and cigarette several times. Casually laid one joke upon another , extacting facets from previous ones, compounding punch lines . I have never laughed so much, my sides aching. On the way out, my friend commented at the many embarassed sheepishly covering flies with folded coats , having wet themselves. Bob was astounding, a genius.

If you haven't already seen it, I recommend "Bob Monkhouse: The Last Stand". His final ever stand up gig, performed when he already knew his cancer was terminal. Partly an absolute masterclass in performing stand up, partly reminiscences, and interspersed with interviews from other comedians who were in the specially invited audience that night. I've seen it many times but still howl with laughter, and then just howl because he's gone.

Bob Monkhouse was a brilliant comedian with such lovely energy. He appeared so serious for a moment when he said that his second son had been taking drugs, before delivering the punchline; his second son died of a Heroin overdose 7 years later in 2001. Apparently they'd been estranged long since before recording this, but I wonder what he knew.

His elder son was disabled and died in 1992. I think I remember hearing that Bob Monkhouse & his brother were abused by their mother. When you think of the amount of sadness & unpleasantness in his life, it's wonder he was such an excellent comedian.
